I love it no one even thought about putting some bs racial non-sense in this. Go see Biography Channel on them. At this moment in time the word "jive" was very black but they were Brits who didn't know the difference. Turned into a very multi-cultural song out of pure innocence. Love It.
OMG! I love this video! The boys r dancing! This is very rare! It seems like they cooled it down after Saturday Night Fever but I love to see them moving and shakin'! Andy always danced his ass off and I loved it! I wish they did more..
God bless him, but it is embarrassing to watch Robin Gibb dance. In every one of these live clips from the 70s he's doing the same move--dancing hopelessly out of rhthym and kicking his legs around frantically. He looks like Elaine dancing on Seinfeld :) Still, it's a great song!
I'm 55 and as best I can remember is that this song was the first or one of the first Disco Song and it was good one, then it started going downhill not for the Bee Gees but all the crap Disco after this. Jive Talkin' had a bit of reggae mixed in.
YEAH! 1975 damn good year! My lil sis was born, me and my Dad were drivin to the hospital to see her for the 1st time in his magical Ford LTD. Long live this song....best memories ever.
I never respected these guys till I got older. I was anti-disco, but Barry was/is talented. Robin is a dork. Maurice seems like he was a cool person. RIP Maurice.
i love love love this song!! Even after hearing it 1000s of times lol. Doesnt get tired. Possibly my fav song of theirs by a mile. Night Fever is right up there too. Bee gees rock!!
@countdownclips - It's not Gold! It's Platinum!!! One of the best songs ever by the Bee Gees. ;) I'm not really a Bee Gees fan, but this song 'just takes the cake'. Anyone that not just can't dance, but just won't dance to this song - just like Kool & the Gang's 'Get Down On It' (Now, that's a band!!!), must have bloody shit in their heads!!! I've seen disabled people in wheel-chairs or walking-frames trying to dance to these kinds of songs!! Today's music is just SHIT!!!!
Here Robin Gibb looks and moves like the sort of person who can't dance to save his life... they always looked like the most square and uncool people on the planet despite the great songs, like this one
I like the idea that they evolved into this quasi-R&B act as their early folky success was coming to an end. I really think it was a genuine move made out of love for the music. It's not their fault that Saturday Night Fever blew up two years later and they became a lightning rod for the disco backlash. Not that they cared!!
Uh, wrong. Barry never said any such thing. Stop making stuff up.
He may have gotten the idea to use the word "jive" based on how some black people talk, but the song lyrics are NOT about how blacks talk. *rolls eyes*
The lyrics are about a woman not being honest with him -- jiving him, in other words.
For anyone interested in a little trivia: That 'chukka chukka' sound for the first 19 seconds (which is probably muted electric guitar played by Alan Kendall off camera) was something they came up with while driving to Criteria Studios in Miami one day (while recording the MAIN COURSE album). Barry described how there was a rickety, bumpy bridge they had to drive over, and as the car passed over it, it made that rhythmic sound. So they got the idea to use that 'groove' for this song.
That 'chukka chukka' sound for the first 19 seconds (which is probably muted electric guitar played by Alan Kendall off camera) - i don't think alan kendall was playing that one it was Barry, you can also see in the video :D
"Upon further review" (as they say in football), I think you're probably right. Barry's back is turned during the intro, but for about one second, at the :06 mark, it does look like he's strumming that part.
Yep. And I don't even hear Alan playing until ~ 2:43, where he just starts strumming a high note right after that ascending synth part (the pitch bend). You can see that Barry isn't playing it, but we can hear it. Then he (Barry) starts playing again when they launch back into the chorus.
To my eyes, the first sighting (barely) of Alan is over Robin's right shoulder at about 3:43.
The 1975 Main Course album was the comeback album for the Bee Gees after a few years of not so-so albums. The Children of the World album in 1976 completed their remarkable comeback. This type of revival reminds me later on of Chicago with their comeback album "Chicago 16" in 1982 and their follow-up "Chicago 17" in 1984 that propeled the band into a second wind of success.
The Bees Gees at what I would describe the second best moment of their career pre-Night Fever. The excellence of this epic group was captured to perfection in their 1st live recording...Live at last!!!

Great song. For me the sax ruined the quality as you couldn't hear the lyrics/melody too well. I prefer the One Night Only version.
