If the bull is not killed within a set amount of time he is patched up and released back at the farm. The same goes for bulls that are granted an 'indulto". This is rare but occurs several times a year.

I mean, you are describing the tercios that everybody knows, and everybody knows what is the purpose of each tercio (basically to tire the bull). @thudka i think it would be very entertaining to watch a man slay a bear or a lion with a sword, but it is just not practical because carnivores are far fewer in number than herding animals and they are just not as delicious as cattle. as for the odds, unskilled matadors get there life changed by bulls all the time. it just takes one small mistake and they will be gored and trampled. the bull is a dangerous beast right up until the blade enters its brainstem.

this is not animal abuse anymore than what goes on in slaughter houses in north america everyday. in fact what the matadors do is more humane than their slaughterhouse counterparts. in slaughter houses, rowdy animals are regularly beaten to death with hammers, its actually quite messy and i imagine a very painful way to die. a bull raised for a slaughterhouse would not even be able to run like a bull the matador kills because they spend their entire life cramped in small spaces.

The bulls live far better than countless "Factory Farm" animals.
And, it used to be, an this is what I'm for changing, the rare but not unheard of cases where the bull did kill the matador, escaped the arena, proved too hard to kill in a reasonable time frame, etc. they had to spare the bull and put it to STUD.
Way back, mankind used to hunt cattle, much like wolves, following the herd and predating on them. This is a ritual to invoke those instincts. Banning things like this is bad.
