Anyone out there has a recording of a performance of Roberto Devereux from November 1980 at the Opera Royale de Wallonie (Liege, Belgium) with Montserrat Caballe as Elisabeth, Alicia Nafe as Sara, Carlos Montane as Roberto and Vicente Sardinero as Nottinham ?

It's unbelievable and he wrote 66 operas. I've only listened to 15 over the past few years.

66 operas.....so not all of them could be "Great Music" but my God there is rarely a dull moment in any of them!! Roberto D is a particularly fine example of Donizetti's genius for exciting, taxing, tuneful and ultimately thrilling Opera......and in this case also dramatically convincing.

I think he did sleep, but only to dream up more wonderful music for us to enjoy.

Oh no, not really, Donizetti wrote 66 operas, I think off the top of my head, and Rossini had about 40. Don't quote me on that. Of course, Rossini re-used a lot of music in his operas, more so than Donizetti.

coloraturfan is a benefactor of our culture. I only knew about 20 Donizetti's opera. Now, I ll extend. To answer your question : he slept but could write his operas without anythingelse than paper. Instead a lot of people saying he was a true genius of Music, maybe beacause only of this.
