  • Jack is The Man!!! He Always blows my mind!!! What talent!!!! Love Mr Jack White!!!

  • this is a good version. BUT YOU NEED TO HEAR -ED SHEERAN'S VERSION!!!! 1000 TIMES BETTER.

  • were do yall think appalachia is in the south the important parts at least it does run all the way to maine but tennesee to georgia are the key places in yalls argument it was born in the southern appalachian mountains dont let ginny82ful fool yall read a book bluegrass is straight outa the mouth of the holler folks happy listening:)

  • well bluegrass was born in the the south(granted roots are irish/scotish) so we get this one bud

  • Only amazing songs have Mandolin solos.

  • FUCK now i have to find MOMMAKUH's comment...

  • Excellent version of this song

  • Jack White does NOT look like he should be able to sing like this. Just sayin'.

  • Its called Blue Grass.:)

  • Blueridge, Southern culture.. married a true southern boy from Charlottesville.. I'm from Ia.. so blessed to have lived in Va. for 10 years.. raised our daughters w southern pride, and culture, w my mix of midwestern farmers.. Just love the romantism of these southern songs, and the storie's they tell.

  • @Ginny82ful This type of music did not originate in the South. These are mountain songs, Appalachian songs. They are a melding of ancient Welsh, Scot, Irish, and German songs, spirituals, and stories from the oral tradition. This music is an integrated history of different groups of people with common values. The songs were culled from the traditions and institutions of the European cultures that provided the immigrants that settled throughout the eastern half of America, both north and south.

  • @occams99 Ummm. I think I know that.. Read alot about The Cival war.. Know where the immigrants came from.. sorry if I "misspoke" I do have a brain.

  • @occams99 southerners..... always trying to take credit for everything. lol

  • fretkillrlives just put me to sleep, thanks anyways.

  • There's no end to what Jack White can do. That's what is neat about him - he hasn't cornered himself into any one style of music. His fans get a taste of different types of music they might have never heard - and that's a good thing.

  • The more I become familiar with Jack White, the more impressed I become.

  • channeling his inner yokel

  • Way too nasally. He's killing this tune. Stop before Johnny comes back and kicks your ass. You should check out fretkillrlives right here on youtube. He doesn a version that is second to none...Mr. Cash would be proud.

  • Comment removed

  • @22parkinl - I believe you should learn how to read. My comment didn't say "Johnny's version was the best or original." My comment said go listen to the cover of this by fretkillrlives right here on Youtube. If you think this version is anything more than a vocal tragedy then you need to have your taste in music removed and cut your fucking ears off...This version is third rate crap.

  • @HardRokMiner You should listen to Roscoe Holcomb's version of this song, as recorded on "Kentucky Mountain Music" in 1959. This is not a Johnny original. It is an old mountain tune, traditionally sang in a "high, lonesome" style. Mr. Cash would be very proud of Mr. White because Mr. Cash probably knows how this song originally sounded.

  • @22parkinl - Where the Hell did I write that this was a Johnny Cash original song? I didn't!! You hicks need to either learn to read, or slow down when you're reading so all the words will stick to your meth infected brains. This version still makes my dog and cat leave the room...Its fucking terrible!!!

  • @HardRokMiner Did you not say "Stop before Johnny comes back and kicks your ass."? If you did not believe this to be a Johnny Cash original, or something that Johnny Cash would have authority over, why would he deserve to kick someone else's ass for covering it in the very same style it was originally played/sang in. This styling, though not apprecaited much today, had more inpact on Johnny Cash than you or I will ever know. Learn to apprecaite other people and cultures, you ignorant schmuck.

  • @HardRokMiner this isn't jack at his very best but there is something to it, you gotta admit that :) as for fretkillrlives, this thing is supposed to be a little gritty, just listen to the lyrics - his version is good but way too "clean", too polished, I'd say

  • @anniikka I agree, definitely isn't Jack at his best...Ball and biscuit (Hell yeah!). But this is amazing nonetheless.

  • This the New Theme for (MY) @NHLBruins cuz I know dark clouds will always "Hang" over (sup #Zac) but we gotta shake the past live in the now & fight to make it to 2marraw!!!!

  • Love it. just heard Johnny Cash and Ed Sheeran do it and this rates up there,to me.

  • to see my M.O.T.H.er ??? what is he an athiest?

  • @balamanti2 are you serious ??

  • @balamanti2 actually this song is about going to heaven...this particular part refers to him meeting his mother who has already passed on

  • @balamanti2 he is referencing the fact his mother is dead and when he crosses over he will see her

  • Me, i can feel the stranger's soul when Jack White is singing this. But i prefer Johnny cash's version.

  • he's trying to sound like bill monroe

  • Look.... I'm a metal guitarist I have studied the art of shredding. But my Grandaddy is a bluegrass player guitar, banjo, mandolin it doesn't matter he takes my ass to school every time I play with him..............

  • @randynelson1 If you listen to some of those old Flatt and Scrugs records, Lester Flatt is doing some crazy guitar work... sometimes border-line sweep picking... I think there wouldn't be heavy metal had it not been for bands like Led Zeppelin and Cream meeting with the attitude and message of old blues pickers and guys like Johnny Cash. And you are right! My High School shop and auto mechanics teachers were banjo pickers and they'd burn the world down every time they started playing

  • EXCELLENT GUITARIST.....wow

    can rock and grass....

  • f#cking bolivia !!!

  • I still do not understand... why, if you think his a poser or you don't appreciate his music, do you watch his video and leave comment? seriously you give me a billion years and I still going: "No man I fucking don't get this!!"

  • Totally made my day! The special Jack White Wednesday got even greater with this :D

  • Wow his voice sounds like chalk screeching across a chalkboard.

  • @MrRedstonefreedom Awesome, isn't it!

  • @MrRedstonefreedom But it doesnt...

  • Jack white can do anything----rock,blues,blue grass etc. a true artist appreciates all types of music. ya gotta have roots to grow!!!

  • I LOVE YOUTUBE!

  • I've just come here to confirm.... that no... he does not compare to Bill Monroe.

  • grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...............Jack is the hottest thing on legs!!!!

  • this song is fucking awesome. Great version, the best i've heard... better than johnny cash!

  • Duh. It's a style of music. Do your research.

  • Does anybody have any idea who the fiddle player is? I cant continue on with my life until I find out

  • @thewikerman Fiddle: Stuart Duncan, Mandolin: Mike Compton, Banjo: Dirk Powell.

  • love jack

  • the most awesome thing i've heard all day!

  • what a waste of talent!

  • @shaikhymx Why, what've you done now?

  • The instruments are beautiful, but his voice is really grating. Makes me sad

  • @InkFlavourJelly

"The instruments are beautiful, but his voice is really grating. Makes me sad"

    -----------

Dude, check the lyrics - "I am a poor wayfaring stranger, travelling through this world alone."

If it doesn't make you sad, the singer isn't really getting it.

What Jack White is doing is capturing the emotion of the song.

  • @roquefort88888 No, I meant the fact that the music is so gorgeous but his voice doesn't match up to that is what makes me sad.

  • Did i see Dirk Powell on the Banjo ?

  • oh wow, jack white is more talented than i thought, ive always loved his music but this time im blown away

  • i need to get a mandolin.

  • @IncrediguyPro and a banjo

  • @IncrediguyPro I need to get a Jack White

  • i got one half off at walmart on black friday

  • Look at the Ed Sheeran version for REAL talent... Don't get me wrong i like Jack White but he can butcher a few things...

  • @DanielMimna Haha, and Ed Sheeran didn't butcher it? Ed's version is just too cringe-worthy.

  • Every now and then you run across a musician that you can't understand how anyone would pay a single dime to see him play... Jack White, I wouldn't pay a single CENT to hear you play.... wow he is really talentless..... his fellow musicains there on the other hand are pretty good!

  • Dude, your an idiot

  • @tpstrat14 You are in need of a full lobotomy.

  • @tpstrat14 Yeah, he's so terrible.. but managed to be in a documentary with jimmy page, but I guess that means shit, yeah? you're a loon, read up before you call him talentless.

  • @KittenOnWheels not only that, but totally kicked that one guy with the effect pedals ass and gave jimmy page a run for his money on that solo bit.

  • @tpstrat14 Well arent you a reetard... :L

  • @FckThePigs jack white is retarded

  • @tpstrat14 you're wrong

  • He's doing an homage to bill monroe's version...his vocal have a gritty quality about them too...

  • Incredible. His Raconteurs stuff is great too.

  • what a poser

  • @celticvisions4 If doing whatever kind of music you like makes you a poser.

  • @DETROITBULLET Like you and your incest parents.

  • A true artist, who feels the music and is true to his interpretation. It's what makes him compelling and the world so varied and vibrant.

  • eerrrm .....NO! ....doesn't do it for me...it's a matter of taste I guess but I find his voice annoying and lacking "genuinity"

  • @gondar79 I hope your joking.... That's about the opposite of Jack.

  • eerrrm .....NO! ....doesn't do it for me...it's a matter of taste I guess but I find his voice annoying and lacking "genuinity"

  • krass geil!

  • mY ALL TIME favoRITE!!! LOVELOVELOVE

  • Freaking Awesome!

  • Does anybody know who the fiddle player is? Nice playing...

  • This is from the Cold Mountain soundtrack.

  • this song is awesome. Mr. Jack White keep up the great work, I love your music.

  • I don't really know why he didn't open his mouth..

  • best talent in years.

  • best talent in years, Jack can do it all, traditional too, who knew....also Robert Plant. the more things change the more they stay the same....wonderful as it should be sung. has Jack done a CD of all traditional or is this just concert treats?

  • listen to Neko Case sing this and it will be like a drink of water in the desert

  • @MOMMAKUH Listened to her version and this one is better.

  • @MOMMAKUH that's just like, your opinion man

  • lol i thought he was gonna say 'i am a poooooorn star'

  • @dare4distance69 lol i thought it too hahaha ^^

  • man oh man ! i don't the hate at all man. everyone's entitled to an opinion though. i personally think the vocals are great. the audience didn't seem to mind the vocals too much either.

  • Eww... He is definitely not a bluegrass singer.

  • He's weird, but that's exactly what I so adore about him....don't know why, just love him..:D

  • whats with all the hate comments?? :L i love this song and jack white

  • @satansprick13 you really are the devil's penis aren't you?

  • i absolutly love this song...it speaks to me...jack white you wonderful man you! this is beautiful music..........

  • This is literally my favorite song of all time and this may be my favorite rendition of it.

  • this is awful...

  • nice and I dont mean the south of France !!

  • One of my favorite versions of this song, Well done Jack.

  • Ugh. So fake. Go find the real thing, not this poser.

  • @ivycompton Posing? Admiring, if anything. You little dunce. Get the fuck out of here, and ask your grandpa for more relics you can absurdly worship.

  • @ivycompton You call Jack White a poser? Really? Are you freaking stupid or just extremely ignorant?? No offense... Check out some more of his stuff, this guy is as far from a poser as you can get.

  • @AndreasSku93 Amen. I totally agree!

  • Fake!!!

  • if you want to hear some real bluegrass look up IIIrd Time Out with Russell Moore, instead of this crap

  • @kamaruki1 shut the fuck up

  • @kamaruki1 you talk shite my friend utter shite

  • Beautiful song, great version by Jack.

  • he should just come out with a solo album soon, i miss him :)

  • I believe whats important is not to decide who originated this song or who sung it first, but rather to be happy that the song continues throughout history. That it has become such a profound song that many want to continue singing it. I love these old time songs, wherever they originate from. Sure i'd like to know the history of them, so i can find similar music, but more so I am thrilled that other's sing it too.

  • This song is over 100 years old.

  • @Koldseed duh much older then that

  • Amazing,,,,

  • H.P. Lovecraft (those old Hippies I LOVE love absolutely LOVE those folks, the REAL ones, ya Freaks you)) Did this, who Originally done did it then mate? Gone and Dids it again then

  • Ed Sheeran version way way better

  • I love hearing Jack White and I love this song you can hear the soul that is in this singer..old songs like this one and for it to be sung like this young man sings it is rare..Love You Jack White...fantastic job..

  • Ok just to clarify, this is a traditional song of British origin, not Johnny Cash or Bill Monroe or any of em.

  • love bluegrass, love jack white, love this

  • I love this song.

  • Im gonna play ace of spades now.

  • Sounds like he's trying to channel the Tennesee Ernie Ford rendition of this song. I'm afraid that Jack doesn't have the voice for it. Check the video for the TEF version. Two different singers. I'd say sing it like Bill Monroe did, but you'd have to have a better mandolin picker. :D

  • @jakal323 -- I disagree. He is doing more of a bluegrass sounding rendition. Besides, every artist can be respected for their unique versions of a song. This comparing artists is absurd. True music lovers can enjoy all, without debate.

  • reminds me of when i was like 3, and my great grandfather wold play his guitar and sing old blues songs from the 20's. that was his prime. He was 25 in 1925.

  • what year is this?

  • As much as I LOVE this version, it's not the best version, that distinction belongs to Johnny Cash. I still think this version sounds amazing though.

  • @FishheadComedy: Both good versions, but my all-time favorite is Trent Wagler's. I think there might be a video on YouTube somewhere.

  • Great job, Jack! ~0:-) (Your presence MADE the movie "Cold Mountain.") ~0;-D

  • @zuesccw I used to have goats. I killed them and they sounded nothing like that. Fuck you.

  • damn...

  • half these comments are so ridiculous. you're comparing him to some teenaged pop singer? that's insulting. just because this doesn't have perfect pitch doesn't mean it's not beautiful, this is the best cover iv'e heard because it has soul and meaning when he sings it. also, people who are saying the original is better: what original? this song is from the 1700's, there is no original.

  • @kingofallwhites there is somthing very wrong with you

  • He has the gift of being able to adjust his voice to suit whatever musical genre or style that comes his way. A true great.

  • Corey Ryder's version is way better than this hack job.

  • @kingofallwhites ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

  • @karmapolice075 Hells yeah go listen to Corey's version- he has soul and authenticity and he isn't screwing his sister either like Jack White is,

  • @kingofallwhites Um, Meg's his ex-wife. They just told people they were sibling to avoid having to talk about the divorce. Next time you wanna insult someone, learn your facts first.

  • @OhMyGodCatapults hahaha you idiot. I know the deal with them but I choose to believe that they are incestuous white trash because it suits them very well.

  • Jack white is awesome.

  • WOW!!!!!! He is in my head with this song.. and every other one that I ve listened to in the last 18 hours... Im hooked...

  • jack white rips everything. but i wanna see him and dan auerbach play together

  • Namaste. Jack White is our little Mozart. Innovation, style, musicianship, et al. Thank You for posting Jack White... a gift to us all. Namaste.

  • Jack White. Incredibly good.

  • Oh Jack You're so cool...

  • he sounds like a dieing goat

  • @zuesccw I hope that one day you receive a goat from a Jack White lover, develop a brotherly relationship with that goat to the point where he is your best and only friend, then go out on a walk with said goat and it gets shot and dies a slow painful death so you know what a dieing goat really sounds like and you also feel the loss of that goat and maybe you'll learn to respect exceptional talent when it is in your presence.

  • @cherrios2good maybe he'll even learned to respect goats too.

  • are you stupid talking to a goat? just enjoy the music

  • @cherrios2good i take my hat off to you...if i were wearing a hat that is..

  • @cherrios2good upvoted for using love as a weapon

  • @cherrios2good Jack can do anything I just love what he is, and love his music ( touch the soul)
