  • HUGE APPLAUSE Joe!!! - never saw this one before, and holy paradiddle batman... 14:57 of drummer heaven right here! I broke a sweat watching and listening to all those precise fills! :) Love that fat snare and those TAMA concert toms too! All I can say is that you know your craft brotha'!!! R-E-S-P-E-C-T ! ! ! Have a great weekend! :D

  • @SteveBDrums Thanks Steve - yeah this is one of my personal favorites for a lot of years. Thanks so much for checking it out. I think it's the best version that Genesis did of this song.

  • fantastic effort...what else can one say

  • @mislead1000 Thanks

  • Assolutamente fantastico. Da rimanere a bocca aperta. Cercavo un tuo video per The battle of Epping Forrest senza trovarlo. Sono italiano pazzo perduto per i Genesis. Ora anche per te. Complimenti.

  • That was truly Amazing! I also have loved this version and have Never seen it played from a drummers perspective, and I also have tried to play along to it and Failed :-) Your fills were faultless, thank you for putting this on youtube for us all to see :-)

  • @Number1mole Thanks so much - yes there are not too many copies of this on YT - Actually I'm surprised they haven taken it down! Thanks

  • Awesome!

  • I'm at a loss for words... You had me at the first Floor Tom beat. My mouth hurts from smiling throughout the song and I actually clapped at the end of this video. What an absolutely spectacular, amazing, fantastic, tremendous job! In a perfect world, this would be the video with 300 million views! Beyond Excellent Performance!!!!!!!

  • @gweiss27 Wow - such a nice comment - I really appreciate those words. Receiving a comment like that make all this work worth the while. Thanks so much

  • excellent ! :)))))))

  • youre drums covers is absolutly great! tom drummer from Prague

  • @tomaskejr I'm glad you like them - thanks

  • still love it !

  • @ihatetoro Thanks

  • Thats Awesome playing both drummers i tried that for years i kept getting messed up GREAT JOB !!!!

  • @jlochervamboj Thanks - It's kind of my own version

  • WOW GREAT JOB BRO !!!!!

  • There's a skip at 4:21 or so

  • @jkovert Good catch - this was to make it fit into 15 min limit at the time - I believe there is also another cut of a whole verse out - but I'm not sure you will notice that one.

  • i have watched this video many times but i still get the hairs on my neck stand up great video

  • @folderjock Thanks sp much

  • Just. Amazing. I don't consider myself a music snob, but there aren't many times that I hear a song from a band that I se to just MISSED. You just made me a Genesis fan.

  • @mysterj1 Glad to have converted another -- Thanks

  • ok... now go get a drink of water and lay down. My God, that was good.

  • Gracias. Buenisimo, me encanto. Segui asi que vas por buen camino siguiendo a los grandes maestros.

  • GREAT work on an amazing song... the fact that you love playing the drums to this tune really comes across - I love it! Phil was such a great musician during that whole period!

  • @looktoaquarius I Know - and this is actually scalled down from the level that he used to play before Genesis. Thanks so much

  • Ah, that's better. I come on this site regularly to watch this when times are a bit rough.

  • @dvaidr Glad I can help - Thanks

  • Great job but i would recommend using a jazz fuzzy beater for that deeper bass sound.....

  • I like more Gabriel in voice and Collins like a beast in drums

  • WOW!

  • FANTASTIC

  • I bet I've watched THIS 2000 times & still LOVE it AWESOME Joe AWESOME !!

  • @ihatetoro Wow - thanks so much - I can't believe you watched it so many times - Thanks again

  • wow.. amazing

  • @waltermcbobom Thank You

  • Simply amazing! But "Just another really long song"? I dont think so. This is one of the best Genesis songs of all time and you really did it justice. Thank you!

  • @Imperium321 Well you know how some people cant be bothered with a song that is longer than the standard 3:05 length. I'm glad you liked it. One of my favorites

  • Simply amazing!

  • @Imperium321 Thanks

  • Fantastic job, Sir!

  • @PrimevalRudy No I don't but that would be a cool mix to do. Let me look into that

  • Do you by any chance have a cover of the complete Supper's Ready and/or Los Endos? That would be really cool if you do post those if you got 'em. Also, I have a concept for the In The Cage Medley where you take every single instrumental portion Genesis has played over the past 30 years and combine them together: In The Cage, Colony of Slippermen, Afterglow, Apocalypse In 9/8 and one they did during the 2007 tour. Anyway, awesome job! I'm proud to have heard it! Rock on!

  • You did put a little Peart-like touch on the ride cymbal part. Caught ya! Good job tho!!

  • @wrob2112 Yes - I have to admit that did come from him. But thanks

  • Worstcaseontario: Mirrored Niel Peart? High respect for Niel but this is purely Phil Collins writing in his drummer-only role for Genesis prior to taking on the duel vocal drum position. Again, no disrespect to Neil but I am sure even he would have a hardy laugh on that one.

  • I've watched this about 10 times to find all the faults I can ... 10.31 into the video you stop for a millisecond to wipe the sweat from your head on your T-shirt.....this is unforgivable when you should be concentrating on the song and also thinking about the next ...brilliant ...fantastic...awsome...amazing.....inspiring video to make, that fans like me enjoy seeing you perform in....so because of this I can only give this video 9.9999999 out of 10.....(excellent thanks)

  • @fnc6810 That's funny - I know the part - the sweat gets in your eyes and burns then you can't see and you have to play with your eyes shut for the rest of the song! I hate when that happens - So glad you enjoy this track - it's one of my favorites - Thanks again.

  • Great!

  • Bang them drums away!!! it never gets old this video. You are officially my hero.

  • This is a GREAT version of The Cage Medley. Your drum is right on it. I know it so very well. I presume you play in a regular Genesis cover band, if not, GO for it.

    Great man...

  • amazing job, one of the most complex arangments out there. but i find that who ever the original drummer is for this kind of mirrored niel pearts style. just an opinion. but whether or not you agree with me on that, this song is amzing bro!! good job!!!

  • Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

I know that piece of music almost as well as I know my own face and what you did was utterly phenomenal. That is the first time I've been able to watch a drummer play that entire track from start to finish.

I think your playing far exceeds that drum kit you played that on, and it'd have been even nicer if you had a couple of extra cymbals to help you out (I'd have bought them for you myself - you deserve it).

Thank you for sharing your talents.

  • @Jez2008UK Wow - thanks so much for taking the time to write all of that. Those are the words that make me want to make more of these. Yes I could probably use a fe more cymbals and a new set as well. It was kind of my own version changed around over the years. So glad you enjoyed that. Thanks again

  • Wow...fantastic.

  • @wkrc01 Thanks so much

  • I don't log in often to comment but that was simply AWESOME. Sure to make Chester and Phil proud. A joy to watch.

  • @strykertube Well thanks for taking the time to log in. I'm flattered that you left a message. Thanks again!

  • Brilliant

  • @andypealing Thank you

  • That was an amazing performance! I was getting tired for you!

  • @pianodannmarr Ha Ha - try playing that 3 times in a row! Thanks again.

  • Sweet, nice work on the video and drummmming:)

  • @joezjoezjoez1 Thank You

  • wow man ! this tune rocks and it's played very well :) what type of drum is that ?! sounds great !

  • @MrPjhitman They are Tama Imperialstar from the 80's

  • thanks a lot ;)

  • Wow man this is great! It's good to see someone still enjoys playing good music, and one question. Are you in a band? If so what type of music do you play?

  • @slowandpainless Not in a band and I love mostly classic rock music and yes I enjoy playing good music!

  • Amazing Can't stop watching this, In The Cage is my favorite Genesis songs of all time

  • @Jerseybound2007 Well I'm glad you found this and are getting enjoyment from it. Thanks again

  • When the student is ready, the master appears

  • @wolenweider Thanks - but I'm just copying - Phil and Chester deserve the credit for being original

  • WTF??!?!?

    Amazing and perfect!!!

    Congrats!

  • @leonardomslima Thanks

  • if I could send u respect in boxes you would get freighters full of 'm!

  • @gamesfrome Wow - thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Great music never goes out of style

  • I love it:) Keep up the awesome Genesis covers. Let the little boys play GAGA covers:)

  • @PearComputingDevices Ha ha - I like that. Yes she does nothing for the rhythm that is in us.

  • WHAT CAN I SAY?? GENESIS BLESS YOU MAN! THAT WAS FABULOUS!!!

  • @ARTUROCK666 Thanks - Much Appreciated

  • REALLY COOL MAN! you really enjoyed it... didn't you!? ;)

  • @MisterZavala Yes I did - Totally

  • Still magic!

  • @dvaidr Thank you - Nice comment

  • Phil and Chester are such great musicians, as well as the rest of the band but what a great drum part. They must have ha so much fun playing it, as you have, of course. Great song!!!.

  • @chilingpai I think they had fun playing all of their music together. There really were some good arangements between the both of them - Thank You

  • Fantastic Job. Very entertaining and educational. I learned so much watching this. Genesis Rules!!!

  • @chilingpai Thanks - I am glad you are getting good information from this video that will help you. I've been playing it since about 1982 or so. It really is a good workout. Thanks again

  • Austin wants to play this song by the time he's 15 he's now 11 1/2 .

  • @ihatetoro Well if he plays it every day he probably could do it by 14! Best of luck

  • I don't know how many time my son & I have watched this video but I'm sure will watch it many more . You are an Awesome Drummer & Entertainer as well, LOVE all your videos but Genesis is my favorite Band of all times. thanks for sharing your talent with us all..

  • @ihatetoro Also love the part that shows U Phil & Chester all at the same time Awesome Video

  • @ihatetoro What is really cool is that you and your son watch this together. That to me is the best compliment. I'm glad you are spending time with him and I'm flattered that you are watching me! Thanks again

  • ho...... wwwwwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww ...

  • Awesome! Best cover ever seen! I try to play along to this one, too - very dfficult... and I am far away from perfection. I think the album/old live version is much different from the excerpt they played during the "When in Rome" DVD I am using to fool along to ;-)

Though, I added this to my favorites! GENESIS forever! Keep up the great work, man!

  • @zeromancer1972 I think I'm going to post a drum only version on another channel - I'll let you know what it is when I do that - Thanks again.

  • WOW.....very very very nice...my father is a BIG fan of Genesis and he can`t believe what you are doing there....it`s very nice....

i hope i will can play it i little bit like that when im a little bit older.

    thank you for this cover

  • @marviniomb1 Your welcome - Tell your dad he is welcome too!

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.....I love this song and I love your drumming. I think even PC couln't do it better. I can see it in your face that you have much fun with it

Please keep posting your drummings here for us to enjoy..

  • @MegaMK72 I'm happy you get so much out of this video - These comments really make it worth the while to make these. Thanks so much.

  • A match up like this one again?... i would say never. There are few modern drummers that I like. They are much too loud and no soul. I gotta say that my favorite drummer is Jazz drummer Bill Stewart. And by the way man... you do bang those drums beautifully.

  • grandioso..

  • I keep coming back very so often and never sicken of watching it

  • @dvaidr Well I'm glad you enjoy this song as much as I do. Thank you for coming back so often.

  • Nice job. Nice to see an original interpretation rather than a straight cover. Like the crossovers at 7:26 (I tend to play the hi-hat part one handed like Phil) - reminiscent of Mike Portnoy's hi-hat section in the middle of Dance of Eternity. Dude, you definitely need to get yourself a bit fat Wuhan china for sections @7:17, 8:22 and 10:08. It'd balance out the right hand side of your kit too ! Love the single headed toms as well - very Phil Collins -and the brushed aluminium finish on the kit.

  • @drsteve0487 Thanks so much - I guess there are many ways to play the same thing. Yes i do need a big china cymbal on the right side. Maybe I'll buy myself one for Christmas

  • Good to see your video back up and running. Was a pretty pissed to see Youtube do that to you. Great drumming, always a pleasure to watch.

  • @erikinhawaii Yes that did suck when they started all of that take down stuff. Thanks for tuning in and leaving a comment. I appreciate it.

  • You have also to mention Chester Thompson, who was real deal behind the drums in this song

  • @Chitoxin Yes you are right. Both of them really complimented each other. Too bad they are not playing anymore. How many more times do you think you will see a matchup like that?

    Thanks

  • @Chitoxin On the live versions, yes. But Phil is the originator of the drum parts. He once said on an interview that he felt sorry for Chester because he had to be him on stage!

  • That was simply awesome!! From one drummer to another you nailed it man. it is inspirational to watch you !! keep rocking!! I put a few covers up on youtube but nothing like this WoW!!

    Great job Bro!!

  • @TheDeltDrummer Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it

  • This medley shows what a creative drummer was Collins. It also shows how good you are. Bravo mon ami.

  • @khatar And Chester too, but personally I think Phil could out drum Chester

  • Top performance man......brilliant. Collins is alive and well and playing on the Drum Channel!!

  • @MrMoogman Thank you so much - I really appreciate it.

  • Fantastic performance. Now I have more respect for Phil Collins drum work. Congratulations, this video will be my reference to keep on drumming!!

  • dude you soo rock!!

  • @whaaselfesteem Thanks!

  • As a drummer myself of the last 20 years, and a massive Genesis fan, and Chester fan my jaw was on the floor watching this, as ive laways wondered how its done, years of trying to work it out through guessing. You have done this song to a tea, its spot on, i was in absoulote shock, ure one of the best drummers i have ever seen, You are brilliant :)

  • @hickorychick1 Wow - thanks for the comment. I kinda play it my own way though. A lot of it is the same and a lot of it is different but I think it kinda fits. It's also a combination of listening to two drummers and trying to pick out which one you want to play. I'm rally glad you liked this and I think I'm going to post a drum only version of it as well

  • Longest YouTube clip I've ever watched... and loved every moment! Spot-on!

  • @dnorv Never thought of that but thanks

  • that was so god damn awesome lollol great job

  • This song sucks but the drumming was great of course!!

  • @1984chevroletdude Aaw - I don't think so - but you are entitled to your opinion

  • I have more respect for Phil Collins now.

  • @BeatleHippieOF Check him out in Brand X if you really want to see Phil play the drums - Thanks

  • @BeatleHippieOF This version is actually played by Chester Thompson.

  • @gugalpm For the most part - Both play in the middle

  • @BeatleHippieOF

    Love it, Well Done

  • @BigALuk33 Thanks!

  • That was awesome dude. Really enjoyed that. Brilliant video too. I love this medley, just brilliant. You done it proud. Defo checking out your other vids.

  • @dominiccarter77 Thanks so much

  • love your playing!

  • @panurge987 Thank You

  • Fucking great job bud. Would it be fair to say this song was kicking your ass (stamina wise) right before Phil started to sing on the second part??? lol. It's understandable. I have two requests, "I cannot belive it's true" n "Easy Lover". I will for sure shed a few tears when Phil leaves this shitty world for a better life. Thanks

  • @cubscursed This one usualy does put me in a full sweat by the end, unless I have the fan going! I'll check out those songs - I do know them and will try to fit them in. Thanks

  • Very nice work! My favorite track along with the drum duet on Abacab - your interpretation while obviously different, still captured all the important points and was not obtrusive like so many other drummers. I kept saying to myself "Hows he going to attack this section?" and you had me smiling each time. Tasteful and enjoyable to watch - Thank you!

  • @escher2112 Thanks so much for that comment. I really appreciate it. Yes I have changed it around over the years and I'm glad I put a smile on your face!

  • The Cinema Show! Nice cover man

  • @liftmedown001 Thank You

  • awsome my mate it over and over

  • @salopianlad Thanks

  • That's a fab rendition. This has got to be one of the best tracks to drum to. I don't care much for the double bass stuff, I'd keep it simple and true to the original. Welll done mate!

  • @rtg0616 Thanks a lot for the kind words. Yes one of my favorites.

  • That's very solid work.

  • @northjeep Thank You

  • Perfection!!!

  • @sargehalo51 Thank You

  • This a great piece, and I love your drumming on it. This and your Behind the Lines I keep watching over and over. I'm not a drummer, am a guitar player but love rhythm and grooves, and so having a pining to be a drummer sort of. On In The Cage I like how that high tom (not sure if this would be correct term) gets hit on the and of three through that one section. That's a nice little ear tickler...

  • @fisherkingbat I think I know what you are talking about. I think that is in the original recording though so I didn't make it up. Thanks so much for taking the time to write a comment -

  • i like how you added your own style to the bass drum part.....if i recall correctly that should be from Three Sides Live...i grew up hearing that and somewhere in high school had the blessing of finding the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album....i must say that is still the best medley they did.....how about Supper's Ready next....or Return of the Giant Hogweed....shouldn't be too hard if you can pull that off....

  • @pvtvitoguido Yes it was from three sides live and the bass drum kinda evolved over the almost 30 years I've been playing that song. It's so burned into my head at this point that it comes out exactly the same each time I play it. It is a lot of fun to play this song. i will have to practicve those other songs but they are really great songs as well. Thanks again

  • Absolutely fucking amazing. Wow!!

  • @Leedarts180 Thank man - I appreciate that a lot

  • Thanks man! I'm starting to get drum lessons and this is truly inspiring. Hope to get there in 10-15 years :)

  • @gplaza Great - Was that you in those High School videos? If so then keep on playing and make it a part of your life. There should never be a time where your "drums are in storage" throughout your life - so save your money for a house!

  • what did you take out?

  • @fcernig33 I know one of those slow verses towards the end was cut out because I had to fit it into 15 Min.

  • That is one of the most entertaining 15 minutes ever! Absolute perfection. My favourite band and now one of my favourite youtube videos....Phil would be proud sir, great job :)

  • @RobElliottMusic - Thanks so much - I really appreciate that. It is such a classic piece of music from Genesis.I'm glad you liked it.

  • WAAOOW!!! you're really great!! you really know this song by heart! you're a great drummer!

  • @agisgraph Thanks - yes this one is burned into the brain at this point. Thanks

  • Yeah. I lived this song back in 1984.

  • wow, thanks

  • YOUR BRILLIANT gosh that some drumming i have to confess i am a phil collins fan but your drumming beat him!
