@renegadekav NO, it was a SAM, the serb battery commander (zoltan dani) was clever, he only locked on for max 20 seconds at time so couldn't be detected & hit by US suppression planes, the VERY old soviet era missiles he commanded actually used a very long wave radio signal that the up to date f117 didn't recognise. that signal was able recognise the f117 when it's shape was briefly shown by having the bomb doors open as waves bounced off them. they fired x2 SAMs & 2nd promixity explosion hit it

@abriell1 - The counter to that is the way the US develops our own systems... electronic countermeasures and ECCM are a huge R&D hole for the US military. A well employed and equipped air force can destroy a modern IADS network... that has been proven in the 20th century.
You can't make the blanket statement that a Russian missile system, however modern, can down an F-22. It may be able to, but only after detecting the aircraft. The Raptor avoids detection amazingly when employed correctly.

If the russians almost have missiles that can destroy our sattelites then I promise that we already have that capability. for example, in 2008 an AGEIS missile launched from an american crusier destoyed a sattelite.

Equally the German propulsion programs were taken lock stock & barrel & developed In USAAF/NASA. US technological dvantage really came about post WW2 & it owes a huge debt to appropriated German technology.

@renegadekav NO, it was a SAM, the serb battery commander (zoltan dani) was clever, he only locked on for max 20 seconds at time so couldn't be detected & hit by US suppression planes, the VERY old soviet era missiles he commanded actually used a very long wave radio signal that the up to date f117 didn't recognise. that signal was able recognise the f117 when it's shape was briefly shown by having the bomb doors open as waves bounced off them. they fired x2 SAMs & 2nd promixity explosion hit it

But two important things to bear in mind: US doesn't go to war with powerful enemies of highest training & with latest generation arms, so its own weaponary is rarely put to the ultimate test & secondly in case of downed f117 over Serbia, a highly trained but tech under equipped enemy wont win but can still apply their operational skills to tech loopholes & make suprise impact on superior force.

@abriell1 - The counter to that is the way the US develops our own systems... electronic countermeasures and ECCM are a huge R&D hole for the US military. A well employed and equipped air force can destroy a modern IADS network... that has been proven in the 20th century.
You can't make the blanket statement that a Russian missile system, however modern, can down an F-22. It may be able to, but only after detecting the aircraft. The Raptor avoids detection amazingly when employed correctly.

The "D" model is the longbow. That has the radar. It was never intended to replace the others on a 1 for 1 basis. In fact, it wasn't intended to replace any of them. One "D" model operates with several of the others. That was always the intent. So in that case, maybe we do have only 75. I won't argue since I haven't done the research. But all told we have close to 1000 even with loses/foreign sales factored in. 25 loses isn't that bad for an attack chopper. They r not indestructable.

Well, when does just one vehicle fight in a war? That is the point you miss. What good is having the best anything if you can't afford enough of them to matter in the big picture. It IS important to the discussion. The USA may not have the single best piece of equipment in every catagory, but we do have by far the best combo of quality AND QUANTITY. And equally important, the entire US military now fights as an integrated unit. Air, land and sea units networked together.
