Thanks for posting this! A great time capsule to find for all who time travel... and no fooling around on this one with a live band backing him up... a nice slice of music and television life!
this song is used as tune for Dutch programms on Radio Northsea Internation and Radio Mi Amigo , both radio ships lying before the Dutch coast on the Northsea in the seventies.
@equestra77 There's hope! I'm 16 and I've met Mason many times. In fact, he and my dad are good friends and I'm on first name terms with him as a result!
i am from latin america, i play classic guitar ...you know, all tha classic tradition from spain......this piece sounds too much pop for my taste...sorry.
THIS was considered "pop music"?? jesus christ, this makes modern pop music look like it was done by a bunch of deaf neanderthals banging rocks together and auto tuning the crap out of it.
@cdlund1987 Yep and I still think this one sounds best to me. Tommy is a much better guitarist technically but that doesn't mean his rendition is better. I think tommy throws too much stuff into his version and makes the song cluttered making it lose its original spirit. Just my opinion and I am not an expert and thanks for turning me onto his version.
40 dislikes? This is an important piece of guitar history. It is the only solo guitar instrumental to win a grammy and it won 3, in 1968. It is still, after 40 years, the most aired, broadcast, used in tv and film, and most covered by other artists of any guitar instrumental ever recorded. Guitar Player magazine said it is probably the most influential solo guitar instrumental of all time.
For the original recording of this song, they say it took nearly 50 takes until he and the orchestra were able to play it completely and flawlessly. Sounds pretty good live here, though.
This is what right hands were Really made for. I'm busting my ass trying to learn this, but a basic lack of talent seems to be a bit of a hinderance. Can any of you musical geniuses out there tell me what he's playing as the final flourish after the A that every one else finishes on. Being tone deaf is not a big help when it comes to trying to work it out.
@oldfartsrock i think its arpeggiating chords ascending in the A major chord scale (eg Bm, C#m,D,E,F#m,Gdim7,Amaj) but thats just my first guess, I dont have my guitar with me at the moment. Maybe this will give you better ideas. or try googling for tabs
I began to record my first album for Warner Bros. " The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" and Classical Gasoline was one of the tunes to be included. On the charts for the session the music copyist inadvertently abbreviated "Gasoline" to "Gas" and so that's how it actually got its title. It wasn't until sometime later that I realized most people were thinking "Gas" as in "Hey man, it's a gas!" --From the Mason Williams website.
Which one of you fuckers clicked the thumbs down button? Now give me your address, and I'll go round to your abode and slap some fucking sense into you.
@kyle89 umm... he doesnt need a capo. his guitar is tuned up a half step. doesnt take much of a bad ass to tune your guitar differently. just takes a bad ass to write a bad ass song. and, in that sense, he is indeed a bad ass motha fucka.
@ypperlig89 Clapton never played classical gas, that's a mistake some people make with that video on youtube saying Eric Clapton-Classical Gas (which is probably the video you watched.)
@ypperlig89 No I'm not, Clapton never played Classical Gas. You were watching the so called Eric Clapton Classical Gas version right? If you looked at that description it says he was wrong and it is from Mason Williams, thats just a studio version from his album "Handmade". Ah fuckit, you're probably trolling me anyway and already know Mason Williams made it.
Thanks for posting this clip. I spent hours and hours today just playing "The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" over and over, and smiling the whole time.
I've seen several video presentations of this piece, and each one is fun for different reasons. I love them all, and I really appreciate seeing this one tonight, which I had never seen before.
37 PEOPLE JUST CAN'T COMPREHEND THE MEANING OF THUMBS "UP"!! THIS SONG STILL PLAYS ON THE RADIO AT LEASE ONCE OR TWICE EVERY DAY. ON THREE CLASSIC ROCK STATION THAT I LISTEN TO, AND I CRANK IT UP EVERY TIME..
IMO having heard this done solo many times, the orchestra adds a little extra oomph, especially the horns and it never ditracts from his great guitar playing
@stupullen that is acctually a phenomenal like/dislike rate. Those 37 may well be people beeing a little too fast with the mouse and hitting the wrong one. It's happened to me.
@stupullen well either way, it is very good. perhaps it's just someone who doesn't get this kind of music. I know plenty of people who wouldn't. Personally, I've spent a conciderable amount of time learning this song on guitar. And now I play it blindfolded.
This isn`t the original, the original version was on his album `Hand Made`in 1970, and is completely acoustic guitar instrumental. You should look it up, it`s on U-Boob somewhere and is fantastic!
Enjoy...no horns, just a man and his fantastic guitar work!

@ChappyBT Actually the original came 2 years before "Handmade". It was on the "Mason Williams Phonograph Record" It used an orchestra similar to this. It won 3 grammys in 1968. Its Warner Bros WS-1729 Released 2/1/68. Williams owns the publishing rights and has released it 38 times himself. Also there have been 100s of covers by artists from Glen Campbell to Paul Muriat and even Chet Atkins. Its also been used in dozens of tv programs,& films . "The Newly Wed Game", "The Simpsons", etc etc.
@revedmusic Actually, I found that out about the original, while reading other comments here last week. I always thought the original was the 1970 album cut...interesting. I think I've heard at least half of the covers done by others, and on many shows as you've mentioned, but I always consider this as the best version, even tho Chet did a great job & is still a guitar GOD! Later
@mattjoe952k9 In his book Published in 2001 he lists about 40 films, tv programs and radio shows that have used CG. but probably the most famous film was "The Story Of Us". As far as covers go-Glenn Campbell covered it and released it 9 times, Chet Atkins 5 times, John Williams 2 times, Hugo Winterhalter 2 times, I counted about 200 different artists and bands before I quit counting. His book was written 10 years ago so there are bound to be even more.
Actually, the name was shortened by a guy doing the label on the 45 and Mason liked it better than 'Gasoline'. I know that for sure. He's my brother. :o) (I just couldn't help but add that)
This was the theme music for a television show in my youth called "Reach for the Top". Fell in love with the music then, still love it now. Thank you for posting.
I spent months in my basement in 73 & 74 learning to play this tune, and prolly 10 gallons of sweat trying to get my fingering straight. I`ll never forget the 1st time I completed the entire tune & I got cramps in my hand...LOL...oww.
I`ve seen many try to play it, but they leave out allot of the intricate fingering and just do the major notes. Can`t blame them really, I`ve done it too.
This is great . Have a listen to Ronnie Aldrich doing Classical Gas with stereo pianos and the London Festival Orchestra. A smash. There is no music like this these days. Pity...
@RubixHEAVEN The "intro dude" is Dick Smothers. He and his brother Tom had one of the best TV shows of the late 1960's. Mason Williams wrote the theme to the show and was the head (comedy) writer for the show when he wrote Classical Gas. He performed it on the show a few times, including this original performance. Tom and Dick Smothers' show was canceled for being a constant thorn in the side of network censors, mainly for repeatedly sneaking in references to Nixon, drugs, sex, and Vietnam.
I can't watch this anymore. after seeing tommy emmanuel rip the shit out of this song this original version just seems too tame and without enough emotion. check it out over in the links over there => if you haven't seen it.
tommy emmanuel literally squats over this geezer and farts in his general direction.

Pity...

@toucheturtle300 Youre right about the Ronnie Aldrich version with the "Phase 4" stereo of the London Records recordings..great stuff.

Back in the 80's I saw this performed on TV with John Williams (No relation) and the Boston Pops on PBS.

intro dude looks like bush :I
RubixHEAVEN 11 months ago
@RubixHEAVEN The "intro dude" is Dick Smothers. He and his brother Tom had one of the best TV shows of the late 1960's. Mason Williams wrote the theme to the show and was the head (comedy) writer for the show when he wrote Classical Gas. He performed it on the show a few times, including this original performance. Tom and Dick Smothers' show was canceled for being a constant thorn in the side of network censors, mainly for repeatedly sneaking in references to Nixon, drugs, sex, and Vietnam.

To me the sound is similar to the begining of the song Love does called Alone Again Or.

Hubiera sido mejor si solo se escuchaba la guitarra y no esos que están ahí atrás.

But this is what turned us all on to this piece. Tommy Emanual takes us all on to another level.

Nice delivery.

I can't watch this anymore. after seeing tommy emmanuel rip the shit out of this song this original version just seems too tame and without enough emotion. check it out over in the links over there => if you haven't seen it.
