  • tommy emmanuel literally squats over this geezer and farts in his general direction.

  • i just wanna be top comment so im gonna say something about 240p

  • Thanks for posting this! A great time capsule to find for all who time travel... and no fooling around on this one with a live band backing him up... a nice slice of music and television life!

  • I hate haters who hate haters

  • A Classic Tune by A Classical man.Credit Given where Credit is due the rest is just hot air..

  • 46 people have normal gas..... or they got soooo excited they decided to turn their screen upside down and thumb up....

  • The beginning reminds me of The Unforgiven by Metallica

  • 46 people are gay

  • Robitussin sent mr here : 3

  • Mason Williams might not have known what he triggered by composing that tune, but it sure turned out quite handsome.Give that man a hug, y´all.

  • this song is used as tune for Dutch programms on Radio Northsea Internation and Radio Mi Amigo , both radio ships lying before the Dutch coast on the Northsea in the seventies.

  • Love the way the guy introducing it, talks out of sync with his lips.

There's a lot of money in comedy like that (see Ronnie Barker).

  • One is never 2 old to rock. Have loved this song for almost 50 yrs. Classic music like this piece will be played forever! Rock on people!

  • @equestra77 There's hope! I'm 16 and I've met Mason many times. In fact, he and my dad are good friends and I'm on first name terms with him as a result!

  • I accidentally clicked dislike. But instead of making a comment about it, I clicked like.....

  • 43 people don't like classical gas prices

  • a pop music classic oh shit i wish our "pop" music today was like that

  • Dental plan!

  • i am from latin america, i play classic guitar ...you know, all tha classic tradition from spain......this piece sounds too much pop for my taste...sorry.

  • @cuerpoeperra Thats Ok. You're still a nice guy....

  • This is one piece of music that doesn't need, MORE COWBELL.....

  • So this is what classical gas smells like!

  • I've heard that for the original recording he played all the instruments himself. Even if that isn't true, this is still an amazing piece of music.

  • One of my all time favorite songs! They don't make music like this any more.

  • Don't care about the video quality - star performance!

  • Apparently Woody Allen is conducting the band!

  • Who would go out of their way to watch this and then dislike it?

  • I clapped too...

  • 00:00 Damn is that George Bush ?

  • i was 30 secs in the video and i clicked the like button.

  • Classic, Rock on Mason! Best job ever!

  • sorry ist nicht so mein fall

  • 40 people hate music and should find a hole and die in it

  • @checkers3901 40 people preffer the Tommy Emmanuel's cover.

  • THIS was considered "pop music"?? jesus christ, this makes modern pop music look like it was done by a bunch of deaf neanderthals banging rocks together and auto tuning the crap out of it.

  • @drumONdrugs23 wait...that's not how modern pop music is created?

  • @drumONdrugs23 true

  • And now ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Conway Twitty!

  • Great video! I met Mason years ago in a music store where I was taking guitar lessons.

  • Still the best version. Mason's version is better than Campbell or Clapton or anyone for that matter!.

  • @chillichomper ever heard tommy emmanuel's?? that is incredible... the one posted by roteman78

  • @cdlund1987 Yep and I still think this one sounds best to me. Tommy is a much better guitarist technically but that doesn't mean his rendition is better. I think tommy throws too much stuff into his version and makes the song cluttered making it lose its original spirit. Just my opinion and I am not an expert and thanks for turning me onto his version.

  • @cdlund1987 fair enough, i can respect that!! happy listening :)

  • @chillichomper Of course. It does happen to be his song. He should know how to play it better than anyone else. And, he does IMHO...

  • Awesome. Great finger picking.

  • rappers cant say word as well as this guy plays the guitar...

  • "Now do classical gas" - Lenny Leonard

  • 00:45 - 1:11 Now i see why golden sun battles themes were so amazing!

  • 40 people have NO taste

  • @socalbabe91 that or they are stuck on the intro to smoke on the water.

  • For the original recording of this song, they say it took nearly 50 takes until he and the orchestra were able to play it completely and flawlessly. Sounds pretty good live here, though.

  • I don't get a choice about it , I have to play this perfectly or lose everything I've ever worked for.

    no pressure lol

  • @spiffication Thanks a lot for that. I'll give it a go when I get some feeling back in my fingers.

    oldfartsrock

  • This is what right hands were Really made for. I'm busting my ass trying to learn this, but a basic lack of talent seems to be a bit of a hinderance. Can any of you musical geniuses out there tell me what he's playing as the final flourish after the A that every one else finishes on. Being tone deaf is not a big help when it comes to trying to work it out.

  • @oldfartsrock i think its arpeggiating chords ascending in the A major chord scale (eg Bm, C#m,D,E,F#m,Gdim7,Amaj) but thats just my first guess, I dont have my guitar with me at the moment. Maybe this will give you better ideas. or try googling for tabs

  • I began to record my first album for Warner Bros. " The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" and Classical Gasoline was one of the tunes to be included. On the charts for the session the music copyist inadvertently abbreviated "Gasoline" to "Gas" and so that's how it actually got its title. It wasn't until sometime later that I realized most people were thinking "Gas" as in "Hey man, it's a gas!" --From the Mason Williams website.

  • well at least on THIS one they are ACTUALLY PLAYING the music..not just playing the record to it. Thank God.

  • 240p ... we meet again

  • @FuntossisBACK i'm sick of this comment.

  • @FuntossisBACK

Fuckin comment about 240p ... we meet again

  • @gmaaailGrisha HAHAHA that was great :D

  • @gmaaailGrisha Guy who replies to top rated comment. . we meet once more.

  • @SilentVoltaire your comment was just a pathetic attempt to be top comment by copying the exact same thing this guy did

  • @gmaaailGrisha You are the one who is

  • @FuntossisBACK Fuck it I clicked the thumb down accidentally. I am sorry.

  • @FuntossisBACK We all hate 240p, but these comments are starting to get annoying...

  • the ORIGINAL guitar hero

im trying to learn this song, super fun

  • YoYo man

  • TOBUSCUS!

  • How can anyone not like this? You got to be kidding. Also think of the time when this was made. This is a great classic.

  • Always excellent, but I can't help but think it went to his head. Never heard anything else. By the way, check out Roy Clark's version.

  • wait, this is pop music?

anyway I like this song a lot better without the brass ensemble

I wish I could play clean guitar as good as this guy

Also the part where it shifts up a scale is the best part

  • 39 people have classical gas

  • pop? what a fucking idiot

  • @KiLLxDoZeR You gotta remember pop in those days is not like the manufactured crap of today.

  • @SMSBJM1981 this style of guitar isnt pop its classical

  • @KiLLxDoZeR Whom ever that was was correct. Back then 'Classical Gas' was considered pop.

  • first class just as I remembered it in 1965...ish

    laurie

  • Which one of you fuckers clicked the thumbs down button? Now give me your address, and I'll go round to your abode and slap some fucking sense into you.

  • @PabloBrown7 LOLOLOL...

  • @PabloBrown7 Bring help Adolph.......

  • @PabloBrown7 lol!!

  • @PabloBrown7: now, now - it's not his fault. He just has no taste...

  • @PabloBrown7 It didn't sound like satan screaming. They must have disliked it.

  • jesus christ...... this band ruined the song, wtf?

  • Still gives me goosebumps. Thanks so much for uploading this!!!!!

  • Hey camera man...his face is not what we want to see.

  • love how chill he is sitting there playing, he might as well be watching the weather

  • Very nice music

  • Tommy Emmanuel.

  • Thumbs up if Emmanuel brought you here ;)

  • Erick Claptyon rox!

  • every time i listen to this song i have an orgasm!!!

  • has he got a capo on his guitar i cant see

  • @TheFgrrt No capo. The song is in open position, A minor.

  • @TheFgrrt no capo 1 bamf

  • @kyle89 umm... he doesnt need a capo. his guitar is tuned up a half step. doesnt take much of a bad ass to tune your guitar differently. just takes a bad ass to write a bad ass song. and, in that sense, he is indeed a bad ass motha fucka.

  • I like Claptons version better.

  • @ypperlig89 Clapton never played classical gas, that's a mistake some people make with that video on youtube saying Eric Clapton-Classical Gas (which is probably the video you watched.)

  • @DrRebelFilms No my friend. You are mistaken. Clapton > Mason.

  • @ypperlig89 No I'm not, Clapton never played Classical Gas. You were watching the so called Eric Clapton Classical Gas version right? If you looked at that description it says he was wrong and it is from Mason Williams, thats just a studio version from his album "Handmade". Ah fuckit, you're probably trolling me anyway and already know Mason Williams made it.

  • @DrRebelFilms Yes, and thank you for that.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting this clip. I spent hours and hours today just playing "The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" over and over, and smiling the whole time.

I've seen several video presentations of this piece, and each one is fun for different reasons. I love them all, and I really appreciate seeing this one tonight, which I had never seen before.

  • Thumbs Up if Toby is a Fag Muffin

  • 37 PEOPLE JUST CAN'T COMPREHEND THE MEANING OF THUMBS "UP"!! THIS SONG STILL PLAYS ON THE RADIO AT LEASE ONCE OR TWICE EVERY DAY. ON THREE CLASSIC ROCK STATION THAT I LISTEN TO, AND I CRANK IT UP EVERY TIME..

  • Thumbs up if Toby DIDN'T bring you here.

  • I see some people do not like the orchestra,

IMO having heard this done solo many times, the orchestra adds a little extra oomph, especially the horns and it never ditracts from his great guitar playing

  • 37 dislikes to the ORIGINAL composer of this song??????

37 people are retarded apes, with dyslexic chimp parents !

at least they are out weighed by 1,574 people with schooling on taste!

  • @stupullen that is acctually a phenomenal like/dislike rate. Those 37 may well be people beeing a little too fast with the mouse and hitting the wrong one. It's happened to me.

  • @torod213 I really don't buy it, I have never given a thumbs down...if I don't like it, I don't come back. ;-I

  • @stupullen well either way, it is very good. perhaps it's just someone who doesn't get this kind of music. I know plenty of people who wouldn't. Personally, I've spent a conciderable amount of time learning this song on guitar. And now I play it blindfolded.

  • You 35 people realy need a sens of good music.

  • i salute you... that is all

  • I'm with SanttuDee. It is his song. Besides, I screw up some parts, but, anywhere I've ever played it, respect and appreciation were given.

  • THOSE OF YOU IN YOU TUBE LAND THAT HAVE MASTERED THIS SONG HIS SONG YOU ALL GET A "BIG" THUMBS UP..

  • Quality was good--at least it wasn't Beta! Thanks for the posting!

  • Nice Bow Tie

  • Disliking this song is as pointless as requiring for an HD version of this vid

  • @kirdot2011 not pointless at all. 240p has low bitrate audio. 720p audio sounds a lot clearer.

  • @kirdot2011 though a HD version of this vid would make it perfect !!

  • No no NO! Why can't it just be a solo performance for christ's sake. Stupid orchestra ruining the subtlety.

  • The original was perhaps the most perfect 3:00 of music ever recorded.

  • the horn part is the best

  • I don't care who you are or what your age is. Listen and absorb. This is the best piece of modern music ever written.

  • @jenoneita AGREE!!!!! a very popular piece of music!!!!

  • A classic! Thanks for saving it for us to watch and listen to.

  • you can tell that at at-least one stage, this film was on VHS

  • Legendary.

  • Mason Williams also wrote the song "Wanderlove" which was a big hit

for Claudine Longet, who is probably better known for"accidentally"

    killing skiing superstar Spider Sabich.

  • I have the original Vinyl LP,i stumbled upon it at a Goodwill store back in 1980

it still has the huge foldout Greyhound Bus poster in it too.

  • Mason thanx 4 being there man I <3 you!

  • i don't really like 1:17 - 1:30 but the rest is just awesome

  • the 80 years :) the best time of my live :D

  • Move the dish.

  • I know this is the original but I prefer NO HORNS.

  • @oldspam Hi

This isn`t the original, the original version was on his album `Hand Made`in 1970, and is completely acoustic guitar instrumental. You should look it up, it`s on U-Boob somewhere and is fantastic!

Enjoy...no horns, just a man and his fantastic guitar work!

Although, I do like horn accompaniment & this version isn`t all that bad really.

  • @ChappyBT Actually the original came 2 years before "Handmade". It was on the "Mason Williams Phonograph Record" It used an orchestra similar to this. It won 3 grammys in 1968. Its Warner Bros WS-1729 Released 2/1/68. Williams owns the publishing rights and has released it 38 times himself. Also there have been 100s of covers by artists from Glen Campbell to Paul Muriat and even Chet Atkins. Its also been used in dozens of tv programs,& films . "The Newly Wed Game", "The Simpsons", etc etc.

  • @revedmusic Actually, I found that out about the original, while reading other comments here last week. I always thought the original was the 1970 album cut...interesting. I think I've heard at least half of the covers done by others, and on many shows as you've mentioned, but I always consider this as the best version, even tho Chet did a great job & is still a guitar GOD! Later

  • Occupation Player!!!!

  • what movie have i heard this in ??? :/

  • @mattjoe952k9

    Two movies to my knowledge...

The dish & cheaper by the dozen.

  • @mattjoe952k9 In his book Published in 2001 he lists about 40 films, tv programs and radio shows that have used CG. but probably the most famous film was "The Story Of Us". As far as covers go-Glenn Campbell covered it and released it 9 times, Chet Atkins 5 times, John Williams 2 times, Hugo Winterhalter 2 times, I counted about 200 different artists and bands before I quit counting. His book was written 10 years ago so there are bound to be even more.

  • too 80's .. i prefer tommy emmanuel

  • Actually, the name was shortened by a guy doing the label on the 45 and Mason liked it better than 'Gasoline'. I know that for sure. He's my brother. :o) (I just couldn't help but add that)

  • Thumbs up if Toby brought you here

  • @SanttuDee hahaha i know right

  • @SanttuDee thumbs up if not toby brought you here but big pun or promoe!

  • Mason is great, cool calm and collected! Love you man!

  • one of the best instrumentals of all time what else can be said

  • This was the theme music for a television show in my youth called "Reach for the Top". Fell in love with the music then, still love it now. Thank you for posting.

  • 32 people where deaf when they heard this.

  • The man has ECONOMY of motion! Looks like he could do it in his sleep! Most people you see play this look like they need a vacation when they finish.

  • @Lordylordmac That's hilarious dude!! And true..

I spent months in my basement in 73 & 74 learning to play this tune, and prolly 10 gallons of sweat trying to get my fingering straight. I`ll never forget the 1st time I completed the entire tune & I got cramps in my hand...LOL...oww.

I`ve seen many try to play it, but they leave out allot of the intricate fingering and just do the major notes. Can`t blame them really, I`ve done it too.

  • This is great . Have a listen to Ronnie Aldrich doing Classical Gas with stereo pianos and the London Festival Orchestra. A smash. There is no music like this these days. Pity...

  • @toucheturtle300 Youre right about the Ronnie Aldrich version with the "Phase 4" stereo of the London Records recordings..great stuff.

  • Dude the quality is good enough to hear this amazing piece. :)

  • Wow. I only wish this could have had better sound quality. That said, thank you for uploading this. It was a pleasure to listen to.

  • I really love this tune you gotta be real good to play that AWESOME

  • Back in the 80's I saw this performed on TV with John Williams (No relation) and the Boston Pops on PBS.

  • the horn section completely kills the mood

  • I am always soo anoyed when those freaking horns come in. This is so much better with out the rest of the band.

  • im sorry but he totally ruins it with that brass section

  • Originally played on a "Cordova" guitar, which in reality was built by Oscar Teller guitars of Germany.Still in business.

  • intro dude looks like bush :I

  • @RubixHEAVEN The "intro dude" is Dick Smothers. He and his brother Tom had one of the best TV shows of the late 1960's. Mason Williams wrote the theme to the show and was the head (comedy) writer for the show when he wrote Classical Gas. He performed it on the show a few times, including this original performance. Tom and Dick Smothers' show was canceled for being a constant thorn in the side of network censors, mainly for repeatedly sneaking in references to Nixon, drugs, sex, and Vietnam.

  • To me the sound is similar to the begining of the song Love does called Alone Again Or.

  • Hubiera sido mejor si solo se escuchaba la guitarra y no esos que están ahí atrás.

  • But this is what turned us all on to this piece. Tommy Emanual takes us all on to another level.

  • Nice delivery.

  • I can't watch this anymore. after seeing tommy emmanuel rip the shit out of this song this original version just seems too tame and without enough emotion. check it out over in the links over there => if you haven't seen it.

  • Nice Job....I have done a my version...check out.... Pipixcan69
