i bought this on vinyl 12 years ago for the roy davis remix and rarely played it as this remix from zero 7 stole the show, ive had a few chances to play this on pirate radio and starting sets...beautiful track.

Might I suggest anyone loving this beautiful song not only pay respect to Zero 7, but pay respect to the little know, and incredibly talented Terry Callier as well. One the greatest folk/soul vocalists every to exist, living in near obscurity today. Check his discography and see what I mean. Zero 7 is the funk behind this track. Terry Callier is the heart.

I think Yusef Lateef's version is true to the original but this version illuminates Terry Calliers personal flavor to everything he does. I would take out the drumsticks and use brushes though and replace the synth with strings.....to soften the attack and add warm glow.....do a test track and let me know....

I love Lateef's and Bill Evans covers this tune... and the sure the original Alex North's score. The "original mix" on the Terry Calliers album is mainly accoustic (his voice and a guitar...the rest of the orchestra play only few bars at the end). The guy who had made this mix had used a sample of Eumir Deodato's waltz "Spirit if Summer". Strange but good idea.

I heard Yusef Lateef's version of the Love Theme from Spartacus many years ago and agree that this (Terry Callier) is rather fine, too. Bill Evan's version is out of this world. Also suggest you look up Kenny Wheeler Quartet (in Youtube) for an equally fine version.

This love theme is so undoubtably beautiful and haunting I'll request that it be played at my funeral. BUT, not quite yet... Best of British luck to you, GozThe Great.

Evans had recorded several time this tune : in re-recording, in solo, and with flutist Jeremy Steig. All are great. As you, I like Wheeler's one. I like also the big-band score by Maria Schneider & the pretty strange cover by french pianist Stephan Oliva.

For my funeral, perhaps "Seascape" or "Minha" by Evans or William Walton's "Touch her soft lips and part" . Best of french gibberish luck to you.

Thanks for the comments, Eric/GozThe Great. I saw the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra play The Love Theme From Spartacus in a t.v. programme years ago. I haven't been able to trace any recording which she has made of the piece. Do you know if she has recorded it somewhere ? I have her "Coming About" and "Evanescence" CDs. Do you agree with me that she is influenced by Kenny Wheeler's Big Band arrangements, even in the use of 'voice' - a Wheeler original. Entente Cordiale at last it seems (LOL) !

Interesting to read of Terry Callier's 'alternative' career at The University of Chicago. The great British-based tenor saxophonist Art Themen is a full time orthopaedic surgeon at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. So many jazz musicians are multi-talented and capable of holding down intellectually demanding international careers outside jazz. I was a Chartered Engineer working in Nuclear Engineering as well as a fairly good jazz guitarist. Oh, yes, we jazzers are bloody marvellous !
