I'm not sure if you know that this song is a Billy Bragg cover, but if you do forget this sentence. The communist comment is most likely dealing with the cold war mentality of "us or them" however he is stating that he is neither in the dichotomy.

I can't speak for him in his particular beliefs, but what I can get from his songs is that he is concerned about social issues like poverty, unemployment, and war. I think his solo material represents his ideologies best.
