So you say the H.264 codec in the MOV format coming out of the 7D is bad... sound weird. Because you export in the exactly same format namely H.2624 MOV using Quicktime.
Now Youtube actually uses the H.624 codec in the MPEC-4 format. So exporting and encoding your clip using Quicktime in the H.624 MOV format is actually doing things backwards. If you exported directly into H.624 codec in the MPEG-4 format not using Quicktime your file would be a lot smaller and exporting would take less time.
@mYOzZyKaT H.264 is a great output codec but terrible for editing in iMovie/FCP. only recently has premiere pro CS5 been able to handle the native H.264 files for editing.
But when you export your files and you chose the use Export using Quicktime @04:08 you are actually doing the following. The h.264 codec is originally an MPEG-4 format. When you use Quicktime to export your movie and you do it in the MOV format, you are vrapping the H.264 codec in a MPEG-4 format inside a MOV container. Exporting directly to MPEG-4 format not using Quicktime will save you time exporting, make the files smaller saving upload time.
would it be possible for you to show the same workflow on "Final Cut Pro 7"? It would be greatly appreciated....thanks and keep up the good work....you do a great job on your tutorials..
Would it be possible to show a workflow of actually putting a video together in IMOVIE? ON the Canon 7d...you take short clips and edit them together...it would be interesting to see you do this as your workflow video was great...it works...and is was very helpful. I subscribed and want to thank you for your help...
Can you connect the Canon 7D to the Mac and use iMovie to record HD as you can with a normal FireWire cam? That is, can you use the 7D as a video "head", with the mac doing all the recording?
I'm also using iMovie '09 and a Canon EOS 7D camera, but I'm trying to upload video from my camera to iMovie using a USb cable - however my MacBook won't recognise the camera. When I plug in the camera and turn it on, my computer does nothing. Don't suppose you know how to remedy this??
I use a card reader, never tried directly from camera. if you don't have a reader, then try to drag and drop the files into a designated folder, then from iMovie import from that folder.
Nice video. I didn't realize about the AIC optimize step. Awesome. However, iMovie adds 6 frames a second when you import, creating a 30 fps project. You can export at 24 fps, and iMovie removes those very frames. See my response video above.
Hey thanks man! Today I just purchased same as your MBP, just the 2.53ghz version. Its awesome dude. I am coming from a 5 year old PC tower with intel p4 on xp. Geeesh did it suck for my 5dmkii and 7d movies. Pictures were ok but not as fast as this beast. Hopefully I'll learn this whole new mac world deal to start editing my movies. Just love to see the movies play super smooth.
Thank you for helping me export my EOS 5D Mark II files.

Thanks for your comment. I have actually switched to Final Cut Pro 7 for editing, so I don't see myself using iMovie anymore.

You mentioned Final Cut Pro. Does it support this file format?
EBanonymous 2 years ago
yup. but in FCP you would convert to PRORES codec which is the best quality available.
