@eddyeatworld100 To makes music like this, you make melodic lines in 10/8, 4/4, and 6/8, and play them together, and then you go through the whole piece and augment it with other voices if you want. You might also change the 10:4:6 polymeter to 15:12:8 and things like that. If you do what this fella did, its really not that hard, and the hardest part is probably having the balls to put it online, since all this stuff sounds like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, hard acts to follow.
@buffaloboyable If you look at the structuring of Steve Reich's piece " Electric Counterpoint 3rd Movement ", it is very Clever! Obviously this guy has tried to imitate the same kind of structuring and I think he's done a good job.

Nicee! literally loved making minimalism myself ahaa :) I did one more like fast III check it out on my page! (Not spam just iif you want to, it got 30/30)
Just wrote my GCSE Minimilism piece yesterday... don't think i'll upload it... but it was with a build up of drums with a small changing melody over the top. It's really nice to see what people outside of my school have done (people who don't have my crap teacher to be precise). Hope you get good marks!
how did you write this!? Its amazing! I am just attempting to do my own minimilst composition and I have no chance.. but I need A* help me out!?? any pointers? :)

WOW! It sounds much, MUCH better than my composition (also found on my channel) lol but since I got "A" for music im sure you also got "A" if not then "A*" :)
this is fucking brilliant. i'm tempted to upload mine - i'm in year ten and have been told my minimalism composition would be capable of a decent mark were it submitted at A-level, but it's nowhere near as good as this. its very patchy but they submitted it to the board and i got 25/25 (i think it was out of 25, anyways i got full marks) i hope you got full marks for this!
@TyroneeT Haha. This is one of the worst things I have ever written - I find it so simple. I wrote this when I was in year 10 as well. I'm in 11 now, but I compose so much now. And its out of 30. Do you know how hard it is to get full marks? It is very VERY difficult. And 25/25 probably is without a commentary or score or "understanding the brief" thing, assuming you do Edexcel's course. And I didn't even submit this. I wrote a whole new one for 2 pianos, 3 marimbas, violin, cello, and 2 flutes.
@amistrymister urm i got 30/30 for my dance piece and yes, it was very easy, but still this is a magnificent piece, i can only imagine your new piece 0_0
@theASDFers You know what I don't remember. I haven't even written this piece out. It was just a bit of fun really. I don't like smooth changes anymore. After listening to only Reich for the past year, I like SUDDEN key changes. But thanks. And yes. There was definetely panning. :D Thanks so much!
@BCFCSEAN I didn't actually use this. I did another piece. Which is much better. I should put that up actually. :D I'm sure yours is fine. Minimalism isn't hard, however. Take a motif and add and metamorphosize. I want to hear yours. Put it up. And sorry but BCFC? There aren't many of you fans out there, I tell you.
The first three notes. Right. D, E, F#. How could you tell? Well, Steve Reich is influenced by Bebop, who like their 9ths, so you can assume that E is the 9th, and it sort of goes like that so thats why you thought it was Reichian. Interesting. Very interesting.
Haha I just finished my minimalism composition, and this wasn't it. This was like the first thing I ever wrote, and it was a bit of fun, but I ended up writing a piece for 2 pianos, 3 marimbas, 2 flutes, violin and cello. And I am yet to find out my mark. I have the "understanding the brief" task still to do. I shal upload that piece soon actually.
Well I was actually the only one in my class (of 15, I'll have you know) who said i want to compose minimalism - the others just have it pickd for them by my teachers. So both my teachers got lazy and let me write my own brief. So I wrote the piece first, and then wrote the brief accordingly. Clever huh?!
hey could you give me any advice about composing minimalist music? i know about all of the techniques like metamorphosis, ostinati and static and non static harmonies, but could you tell me how i can include them, like how to make the tune go out of sync and back again? please?
well, if you're a pianist its easy. on average, I spend around an hour a day in front of the piano, and by doing this I might hit the keyboard in a weird way, and might produce a nice chord. I might repeat this chord in a weird way, or break it up. I layer on top of the chord with different timbres. It all comes together! First decide on instrumentation, and how many to use. And you mean phase shifting - its hard; very hard. what do you have at school computer wise?
i also spend about an hour at the piano every day, but im not very good at reading music, so it all comes from memory and from inside. at school we have cubase SE and Sibelius 5. For my last composition which had oriental influences i used cubase, but im using sibelius for my minimalist peice. im using mainly percussion: marimbas, glockenspiels, harps, timpanis and chimes. i only just started and just have 1 pattern on the marimba track so far, its in 4/4, and about 126 tempo, in D major.
Avoid 4/4 dude, seriously. Timpanis? Minimalism and timps dont match, sorry, unless of course you were to include some additive melody, which would be pretty darn cool! Glocks and harps - clashing timbres much? Dont bother messing around with Sibby - gcse music doesnt mark a score. Chimes could be cool - have a repeating pattern in the higher octaves made up of around 5 notes and you could really have something good.
thats what ive got at the moment. ive got a repeating ostinati d, e, f#, a | d, e, f#, a | d, e, g, f# | and it kind of over laps higher, but like slightly behind. and ive got a few separated d major chords in loads of tracks that overlap with eachother, im probably not going to use timpanis becuase i dont like the sound much. if not 4/4, what would you suggest?
And another thing actually, I haven't come across the software you're using, we just use Sibelius and Cubase. From what I gather Acid Pro is like Cubase i.e. a sequencer? But yeah, once again I really like your composition :)
I'm doing the EDEXCEL GCSE in Music too, my composition piece (number one) was minimalism, I got full marks but I don't think mine's anywhere near as good as yours, I really liked this! Well done! :D
My teacher was telling me its almost impossible to get full marks in composing; you really must be something special. Upload yours onto youtube; i really wanna have a listen. or send it to me. or message me - you have encouraged me to try and get full marks. Its interesting. I'm scoring my 25th minimalist piece now - i am just a HUGE fan of Steve Reich's music.
And thank you - this is crap btw listen to Donkeys and Melons its 10 times better.
It took a bit of work but it's not impossible! I will try to put my compositions up when I get back to school, since it's saved there. Might be an issue with the school computers blocking youtube though! I had a listen to Donkeys and Melons, I liked it, but I love this one! It's good to know I'm not the only one enjoying Minimalism LOL! Philip Glass' "étoile polaire" and "ange des orages" are my favorites by far! :)
Ah oui they are fantastic indeed! However, I've always been one to argue that Glass's music is much too melodic to be considered minimalism. His change of chords and stuff is just too differentiating - and NEVER have i heard his use of additive melody. at all. what you predicted for music?
That's true actually, thinking about it! I mean it is minimalism in a sense but doesn't necessarily follow all the rules. I'm predicted A* for Music I've got full marks on everything so far, just got one more composition and the listening exam. How about yourself? By the way, I don't think much of the BritPop topic... not to my taste at all lol! Everything else is great though, and the Raga, Fusion etc is 'different', it's a really interesting course, I feel :)
Yeah A* for me as well - probably my strongest subject - its so darn easy at GCSE level I get quite bored. Full marks solo and ensemble 50/50 for that, and I got 25/30 for a piano rondo solo I did based on form - that wasn't very good because I am a minimalist composer - I cannot write for just one instrument! I have to have polyrhythms and cross rhythms and additive melody and all that. I love Britpop! Its amazing! Raga maybe not so much - alap piss off lol. Fusion - love it. :D
Minimalism was first introduced to me in Music, it's new to me. I've been brought up the traditional piano grades and theory route so all the classical stuff: rondos etc are like second nature. I guess I like Minimalism and Raga since it's all new and exciting to a point for me! :) Have you done any grades?
Haha Minimalism was introduced in Music GCSE as well. I'm not actually a pianist - I'm an oboist. I'm self taught in piano, but am Grade 6 in Oboe. I take it youre top of the class? Me too lol
Haha, yeah I'm doing Trinity for Theory and Piano, I've got my grade 8 practical soon and I'm waiting for my grade 5 theory results! Trinity's good in that you need grade 5 theory to do grade 8, which makes more sense than ABRSM's requirement of grade 5 for grade 6 practical. Haha :) Anyway, good luck with all your studies :)
Im currenty studying for a degree in musical instruments at the moment and im doing a small assignment on the inception of minimalist music and just came across this.
Minimalism is one of my favorite types of music and I have been lucky enough to see Philip Glass and Terry Riley in some very intimate venues.
This a truly inspired piece good luck for the future
My fiancee happens to be a secondary school music teacher and she also likes your piece.
Thank you very much - this isnt really one of my favourite pieces to be quite honest - I've written better - check out my channel. This I found was too repetitive, and irritiating after a while. However, my music teacher liked it!
i rated this 4 star coz it's maby a bit too repetetive, but it is one of the coolest piano pieces iv heard and i think it's amazing that u produced a work of art like this 4 coarswork. im doin my coarse work on minimalist piano music so hav u got any advice or ideas that wud help me?
don't worry you're probably just sick of it because you've heard it so many times, but it's really intriguing and it gives a wider range of ideas which I can use for my composition.
Minimalism tend to be rather repetitive though - and I feel the build up in this piece has been done astoundingly well. Having listened all the way through, I think it deserves an A* for sure.
I subscribed to your videos because I'm going to be creating a minimalist composition for coursework, based on area of study 2 as well. I'll be needing all the examples I can get! :)
i thought it was a good piece but a bit too repetitive for my liking, i didn't like how you said " if you find it boring, then you have to find musical skill." as it is you that has to get better at composing if people find it boring, the listener doesn't have to become better at listening, you just have to grab their attention.
HAHA! Its so true - I knew someone would pick up on that.
I agree - I am fairly new to minimalism. Subscribe to me - im gonna be putting my newer ones up - you seem like a perfectly good person to review my work, and I would be very grateful!
Great job, very Reichian. This is probably better than most of the other GCSE stuff. My criticisms are that at about 1:30 it gets too repetitive (I know it's minimalist) but I thought you could add some variations on the the top a la New York Counterpoint. Didn't care much for the sudden change at 1:45ish thought it too abrupt and would rather it evolve naturally. liked the last change from minor to major though. All together a good piece and a good effort, keep it up!
Thanks so much! Yes a lot of people call my work very similar to Reich's. I totally agree - it does get a bit boring at that point which you mentioned; I have changed that; I must upload an updated version.
YES! I had the same thought - New York Counterpoint was not ideally one of the inspirations of this piece, but I could definitely steal a thing or two. The sudden change - Do you think I should metamorphosize?
Yes, I think ideally a minimalist piece should evolve naturally with subtle changes and chord progressions. Of course this is easier said then done but I think you can do it. A good example (if you're looking for inspiration) is Reich's Six Marimbas
this is amazing, fase shift?

I don't think anyone plays the Oboe in my class lol, I like the instrument though, do you do your grades with Trinity or ABRSM?
MrJakaroo94 2 years ago
I mean top of the class GCSE Music wise, but whatever lol. Trinity is my grades. Woopie. And grade 5 theory ABRSM here we come ugh lol
amistrymister 2 years ago
Haha, yeah I'm doing Trinity for Theory and Piano, I've got my grade 8 practical soon and I'm waiting for my grade 5 theory results! Trinity's good in that you need grade 5 theory to do grade 8, which makes more sense than ABRSM's requirement of grade 5 for grade 6 practical. Haha :) Anyway, good luck with all your studies :)

hehe yeah its true! Good luck with that. You seem intelligent enough for distinction standard. And grade 8 piano thats pretty darn good.

Well done a really excellent piece

Thank you to yourself and your fiancee!

i rated this 4 star coz it's maby a bit too repetetive, but it is one of the coolest piano pieces iv heard and i think it's amazing that u produced a work of art like this 4 coarswork. im doin my coarse work on minimalist piano music so hav u got any advice or ideas that wud help me?
:D

yeah sure - send me a mesage with what you need help with mate!
And yeah toooo repetitive. but thats minimalism. and i dont like this track anymore to be honest.
amistrymister 2 years ago
don't worry you're probably just sick of it because you've heard it so many times, but it's really intriguing and it gives a wider range of ideas which I can use for my composition.

RoyalNobility 2 years ago
yeah lol i havent done mine yet - for my first one ive done a piano rondo - 27/30 for that haha wooo
and minimalism is like 10 times more fun. you know what just for you ill post a load of stuff.

i thought it was a good piece but a bit too repetitive for my liking, i didn't like how you said " if you find it boring, then you have to find musical skill." as it is you that has to get better at composing if people find it boring, the listener doesn't have to become better at listening, you just have to grab their attention.

HAHA! Its so true - I knew someone would pick up on that.
I agree - I am fairly new to minimalism. Subscribe to me - im gonna be putting my newer ones up - you seem like a perfectly good person to review my work, and I would be very grateful!
Thanks for the comment; it made my day!

Thanks so much for your very intelligent words!
amistrymister 2 years ago
Yes, I think ideally a minimalist piece should evolve naturally with subtle changes and chord progressions. Of course this is easier said then done but I think you can do it. A good example (if you're looking for inspiration) is Reich's Six Marimbas
JosephGlaser 2 years ago
Yeah i like six marimbas but it drags a bit dont it. Ok - ill take your advice on board.
