The best Northern Soul has a haunting mysterious quality about it; something which Luther Ingram understands perfectly. I first heard it on a compilation 33 with the highly original name of 'This is Northern Soul'. The album was full of great tracks, but this sound is the dog's nether regions.

@alcoyboy Luther would never have even heard of never mind understand Northern Soul. The whole point is that these tracks were dismal failures in the states that we resurrected over here. Do you think Al Williams was thinking about Wigan Casino when he recorded 'I am Nothing'?

i didn't know about this one until i heard it a few months ago and it's a little bit better than his 1970's recordings to me. and yes,i was shocked myself when the dj at our little local station announced that mr. ingram passed. i knew something was wrong because before the announcement they played about 4 songs of his in a row. whenever a dj does that on any one artist i get nervous like-...UH OH!
