Thank god Ray joined Redemption. His voice is much better suited for that band and he sounds great with them. John Arch, however, is in a league all his own. Oh and the new Arch/Matheos cd is fucking incredible.
I stopped buying Fates Warning after John Arch left, the magic was gone. Every bit of their unique sound was lost forever. It was such a shame then and now that it makes me want to go punch some Head Bangers Ball lovin' MFer right in the mouth!
One of the things made this song the best heavy and progressive metal song ever heard was precisely the feeling and magnificent performance its singer John Arch had. Ray Alder is an excellent singer, but definitely this is not a song for him.
John Arch ruled this song , but he was high and higher. sorry fans. Ray alder brought a little meelody o the songs. I kind of agree with Jambo bruce sings better but D'Ianno had a voice. what Fates right now is Me!!
I always felt like Arch added a dynamic to the music that is very difficult to describe; Kind of a hypnotic dreamy state. I am not sure I have ever felt that effect from any other band. Alder is an amazing vocalist, but could never seem to bring that magic to the band. It’s one of those things in the music world. Something special that comes when you mix certain musicians. When that group of musicians is separated, the magic is gone forever.
Just to be fair, we've never heard Arch try to do an Alder/Fates song. I doubt he could have pulled it off because it WASN'T HIM SINGING ORIGINALLY!! If the guys in Fates thought Arch was better, they would have stuck with him. Ray Alder has greater range & dynamics, which is what they were going for at the time, not just high & higher. I liked John Arch, but prefer Alder's vocal range way more. You guys probably are the same ones who think Paul Dianno was better than Bruce Dickinson.
@BlackRoija Oh yes, Wikipedia is THE source for all that is correct. Dude, I remember the interviews back in the day that cited band members saying that they didn't care for the "high & higher" range of Arch. Arch was cool, but had no timbre in his voice. No depth. So.... to quote you, "try again."
There's an interview on the Fates Warning homepage that confirms he was kicked out because he couldn't quit his job for the band. To think they kicked him out for high register singing is nonsense - listen to Alder on No Exit, which has falsetto all over the place. Hell, Arch didn't even sing with a falsetto, he sang with a very strong head voice.
Besides, what made Arch unique were his unusual vocal lines (which Alder, as good as he may be, simply cannot reproduce), not his range.
Good sound quality, but a poor rendition of the original!! There is only one John Arch, and Ray Adler tries, but is nowhere near as talented vocally. Arch hits the notes much better!

pitchy..Ray is all over the place live, even with his own songs..

At least this one....
Yikes...

Epic fail, this was Arch's song all the way. It was not made for Alder to sing and he should avoid anything that Arch was singing for the band.

Christ, what the hell happened here? Ray Adler during this era was normally pretty good!

Ray alder sucks ass - so off key it's painful. Jesus.

They got rid of Arch because of his job interfering with the band, not his singing ability. Try again.
