Great tune. But you are erroneous (along with EVERY reference online to Earl and Ernie's discography!) as to this album being their debut These guys had two LPs on Metromedia ('70 and '72) WAYYY before the first Asylum LP.
Its not the unions that took the jobs away bud. If you wanna just trust the bosses to graciously decide to treat workers well, go ahead. Certainly there are corrupt unions, just like there are corrupt companies, but the principle of organized labor is fundamental to fair treatment in the workplace.
@ejohnsonious01 Right on man,the captains of industry see the working man as a necessary evil and you have to protect yourself and your kids futures so you need a union and a union that has power in Washington..
I remember this tune 35 years ago, this very month in 1976, playing on the radio. Heard it in April of that year in fact. Was just a freshman in high school.
Wow awesome- what a fantastic blend of Rock jazz pop funk rock, flamenco, classical, everything from soulful ballads to full-on blues raunch all in one package!
WOW I REMEMBER the day! You guys used to come listen to us in the Downtown-er I think it was called on the hill...I would see you guys walk in and dang I like SMP cause the AWSUME CATE BRO'S were in the room! Hey I was only like 18 give me a break ok.. I know there is no give me a break in this business
I was 22 years old, on the roadin 1975, playing in fayetteville, our guitar player and I wandered in totally unaware on our night off to see the Cates in a club and Union Man, took us a couple of days too get speech back.
Heard this for the first time last week and immediately it hit me as a "first listen classic". I have found Voices of Americana: The Cate Brothers on Spotify. As I was 3 when they were big, I am allowed to be a fan who came to the party towards the end.
Endlich Endlich....!!!!! Ist das ein Glück, diesen Titel, den ich seit 1976 auf einer Single habe, wiederzufinden. funky-groovy. Außergeöhnlich. Würde auch heute eine Nr. 1 - Titel, wenn Radiostationen ihn senden....
This is a great song from the seventies. Funky and Pop at the same time. In the Netherlands this was not a hit in the Top 40, but a hit in the better discos. The follow up is also great and funky: Where can we go.
Thank you so much for posting this. My dad had it on a tape which he recorded back in 1976 which he lost and I had no idea as to who it was, though it was played on a British radio show on Piccadilly radio. For a long time I thought it was a Hot Chocolate album track as I didn't know who else it could be. This sounds more like a full band than a duo, but it's awesome funky music. They don't make dance music as good as this anymore, which is a shame. The kids need something different.
Wow Mike! Stumbled across this one while looking for songs for my *cough* 30 year class reunion. I didn't realize it came out in '75! I was only in the 6th grade when this song was out, but man, does it ROCK! You could easily pack a dance floor with this tune. Fantastic... thanks for posting it up.
This is without a doubt an OUTSTANDING piece of music. I loved it then and I love it now. This tune not only keeps your interest, it just cooks harder as it goes along. Bravo Cate Brothers. Thanks for posting this Mike even though it was one of the first songs I loaded up when this old boy finally got an iPod. And I agree, real nice Ronnie Isley feel on the vocals.
The Cates are from Springdale, Arkansas and grew up on a farm just east of Springdale. Great guys and I grew up listening to them and a bunch of others who played the "rockabilly" music or southern country blues. Fayetteville had the clubs because of the university so we hit'em all. Levon Helm and Ronnie Hawkins owned the Rockwood Club in Fayetteville.
This takes me back to my High School days, and listening to songs like this and "Spanish Hustle" on 96.1 FM when the local Pittsburgh TOP-40 station went automated with taped disco music for a few hours each evening. I've got the 45-rpm single of this somewhere in my collection.
Too damn cool. I was raised on the coolest music (thanks DAD R.I.P.) When disco was taking off and my dad was always pointing me in the right direction. I was 10 years old and he would say dont listen to that... listen to this. Doobies, Cate Brothers, Zeppelin, Doors, (already a beatles fan), and the list could go on and on..... I have not heard that song in over 25 years... Thanks.
Cause everytime i went to the older brother house,he was playing this, doobies, led zep, thorogood, stevie ray.Thought that music sucked! But i was so WRONG! Best music ever!!!!!
Great song never seen the video.I have seen the Cate Bros.many times over the years living in Fort Smith, Arkansas about 45mi.south of Fayetville where the band is out of. Awesome Band ! Thanks Mike!
i have looked and looked and looked again for this song,i cant beleive i found it,i heard it years ago on the radio loved it, and never heard it again until now.why to go music mike!!!!
Thank you for this. I have looked for years for Uniom Man by the Cate brothers in oldie record shops and E-music store's. This was on the radio when I was in high school. One of my friends had a 200W tube amp and some big speakers. He would play this song. The base was tight and hit hard. Thanks again.
I found my first Cate Bros. LP in a .99 cut-out bin in a Pamida store in WY in the early 80's. All my vinyl is in storage, so I'm working on memory fumes right now, but I think the album was called "In One Eye." The title cut is great and another track, I think, "Stuck in Chicago" served as a great intro to these guys. I'll be happy to share it when I unpack.
Music Mike, you nailed it again helping us stay connected with the past and introducing a new generation to truly enduring music.
I'll bet the unions do NOT like this record. I wonder if that's why we don't hear it on the radio anymore, even though it was a reasonably big hit. Thanks for posting. Music needs to express all sides.
Hey, man, great track - this was big in Scotland in the 70s. I had 2 of their albums (probably still do). I played in a band back then and we used to perform 'Always Waiting' from this LP. Super - nobody makes 'em like this anymore. Pity.
Thanks for this great tune.I have been searching for it for years. What about a pic of the union man that comes to your home every day......your letter carrier!
Takes me back to the mid 70's. Great song, Steve Cropper was involved in producing. The good old days with that 70's phase shifter sound. The guitar work is great, only the sythesizer sounds a little cheesy all these years later.
That was the first thing that struck me -- Steve Cropper sound. Booker T, Blues Bros. Etc. First heard these guys when I lived in Fayetteville AR playing next door at a Frat House in 1973. Tight; tight.
Hey Flashback Favorite Man - What a terrific track! I don't recall ever hearing it before. And thanks for making it stereo!! On a tape somewhere, I have Les Dudek's "Old Judge Jones." I don't even own a tape player any more. I'd love to hear it and get some info about Dudek and the song. Any chance you can feature it sometime? Keep up the good work and good vibes!
Awesome track!! Hi Mike, Greetings from London UK. This was only played on one Radio Station in the UK and was played as part of a feature on Radio London called "Meanwhile back in the States" . . Don't suppose you have Bobby Keys and Gimme the Key do you??
