I know that it's true in Free Play. Not so sure in Story Mode. The studs and MiniKit canisters that you collected will also be added. This also works for LEGO Indiana Jones 1 and 2 as well as LEGO Batman. It doesn't work for the first two LEGO Star Wars games.

You have to get Power Bricks.

The power bricks are in the Rebel Attack, Falcon Fight, Cloud City Trap, Speeder Showdown, and Jedi Destiny levels. The Cloud City Trap and Speeder Showdown levels require coming back in Free play.
