Many names are derived from actual things. But christian was a derogatory word used for the followers of Jesus Christ. Yes, the name is but a name. Just if someone was called Pagan, or Odinite, or Hermes. It's just a name, but the word has historical meaning to it as well.
@Shockerthe69 Pretty sure that you're the ignorant one. I'm not talking about historical context, I'm talking about the name. It's a common first name. As a common first name, it has nothing to do with faith. At all. I know an athiest named Christain. As a name, it has nothing to do with the faith.
An interview with Chrigel that should clarify, well, all of this. Good enough for you? I did some pretty through research, and I can find a half-dozen other statements affirming not only Chrigel's faith, but that of several other band members.
@think19090 I too don't like to use many labels for things (the insane use of labels in modern heavy metal drives me NUTS) - just prefer to call it folk metal because the main distinguishing feature of it is the use of European FOLK instruments :p
There have been plenty of other songs which have lyrics surrounding European mythology but have never been dubbed 'Pagan-this' or 'Pagan-that'. I just think folk metal is a better term for it as it avoids a lot of 'awkwardness' (if that makes sense)
Not a fan of the terms "Pagan" and "Celtic Metal" - modern concept of "Celtic" is actually purely Gaelic (Irish, Scottish and Manx) - no one really knows what the music of the non-Gaelic Celts was like coz it's extinct. Pagan is also a problem because whilst they are songs using pre-Christian (ie Pagan) instruments and talkin about the history/myths of the Pagan Europeans nowadays "Pagan" is used more as a term for a religion - there's no religious content in their songs (as far as I can tell)
@barrry9 Well would it be truth to call it folk music? since folk is already a subtype of metal( I know it's not always), I think we can call it simply folk metal.(sorry if my english isn't perfect)
"Pagan" actually derives from the Roman Latin paganus, meaning country-dweller. So anyone living outside the sophisticated elite in the city of Rome were pagans in the sense they were simple farmers or noble landowners. And, of course the rich Romans also applied the term to the Celto-Germanic barbarians impinging on or outside their territories. Today, pagan is a blanket term and is widely misused or understood.
@barrry9 There's lots of pagan religious content in Slania, and Evocation. Everything Remains seems to be mostly political (anti-imperialist) although there is still a few references to paganism (quoth the raven, sempiternal embers for example)
@rswoods7 Almost every song contains curses towards Romans, but if you doesn'y count that, Everything Remains is really political correct album =)) Try compare it, hmmm, maybe for some Finntroll's album and you see the differecne ;)
Oh, and great song! One of my favorites by Eluveitie! :)
@barrry9 Some Brythonic Celtic tunes have survived in Wales (thought not many). Traditional Welsh instruments have enjoyed a revival in the past 10 years as well.
@johnathanyoung100 That's the thing - there is no such thing as 'Celtic' paganism or 'Celtic' culture. 'Celtic' is the name for a FAMILY of related languages which wasn't even used until around the 18th Century. The idea of some pan-Celtic cultural identity is a complete myth and has been used more for political reasons. Again, that's why I don't like the term 'Celtic' metal.
0:23 - 0:28 exactly like Dark Tranquillity's "Hedon". Still, never bad to hear an excellent riff in a worthy song. Great chorus.

By the way, Christian is a pretty popular name, and has nothing to do with faith.
