Vintage, you're drunk. Lanois is in a different league from Mayer. Mayer's version is lifeless; his voice is boring and his guitar playing is cliche. To say Lanois has no guitar skills is pure baffoonery. Enjoy your teenie-bop music but don't listen to this stuff if you can't handle a little depth.

also...if i didnt know better...johns is not original at all...while augustanas lead guitars put a new spin on a heavily snare driven song...and on top of that..they recorded that song when they wer still fresh on the scene..if they did it now it would be 5 times as good..but that doesnt matter cause it was still an amazing rendishen of a greate song..and im sry if i hurt your feeling by useing the word "ass" i didnt know i couldnt say that

john does have greate guitar skills...but you cant say his voice is as good as dans...listen to dan sing baby please dont go, stars and blvds..and fire live on his tour with one republic...not only did augustana steel the show...most every one that went to the concert at the hamerstien ball room hadnt hurd of them when they came in..but left loveing them...that takes talent

This song has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written or performed. I love the combination of Emmylou's emotional delivery and the sensuality of Daniel Lanois' accompaniment. I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this...and it brings me back there everytime....

yes - it's two guitars. They have chorus, reverb, and slight delay effects added.

With all those effects, it could almost be a special feature by U2's the Edge!!

re guitarman-- it's daniel lanois, who has often worked with u2, producing their albums. so the edge-like sound is no coincidence-- prob'ly they both influence each other.

@YolondaHayes - you might not like The Edge's guitar playing. It's okay for you to not like his playing. But to say he's a terrible guitarist is not a fact. He plays guitar just fine. It make not be fast and technical playing like that of Steve Vai or Joe Satriani but unlike those two, the Edge writes memorable songs that fill and entertain stadiums and not merely those looking for guitar heroics.

While I love Augustana, John Mayer's version is original. It is not a copy of Emmylou's.

And, really, if you want to talk about wooping ass (which is a really ignorant thing to talk about in music, mind you), Mayer has undeniable guitar chops. Dan has neither an undeniably wonderful voice nor guitar/piano skills. It's simple stuff.

If u look at great covers by other bands, they almost always are way better then the original, like pearl jams crazy mary for one example. Augustana took a good song and made it so much better, and so many teens and adults who never herd of "where will i be", now know it because of Augustana, not john...

Love this song. My father introduced me to the great Emmylou Harris in the 80's and I have a dedicated fan ever since. I love this album in particular. I am part of a significant Irish following!
