I've never seen it done that way before! I'm vegetarian and choose not to eat meat and fish but don't care if others want to. I do get really annoyed at meat eaters who object to killing animals! Here's the thing about crabs and lobsters, they don't experience pain the way humans do. Although studies show that they do at least feel sensations of "discomfort". Although honestly, I don't think cleaning live crabs is entirely humane. It's not like it would take much time or effort to simply stab the crab in the belly to hit it's heart before popping it open, or well, just partially-freezing it before hand. But, to each their own. Also Yama, that's not true - crabs cease moving pretty quick.

Actually when you ripped the crab's shell off, you took his head with it, so it was dead, just it still has last minute reflexes and what not. There's different ways to take its shell off though.

@McCoy196 actually crabs are pretty easy to kill humanely, put it in a bowl all tied up. put a cloth over the bowl and stick it in the fridge for 45-60 mins, depending on size. it wont freeze the crab just kill by lowering it's body temperature. crab wont feel shit

@jpringle123 Well, crabs are harder to kill than a lobster because of that darn shell. With a lobster, all you have to do is stick a knife in its head and cut its head in half. Can't really do that with a crab. =P But I guess that works, though I'd like to get it done quickly, but that's just me.
