Great discussion. I hope humans can be what Mr. Rifkin said is possible. But I disagree that behind the scenes, out of the history books, things are fine. When we kill stray dogs (which he mentioned also have mirror neurons, not to mention pain receptors the same as humans), or when (just in the U.S.) we kill 9 billion chickens, 116 million pigs, and 35 million cows per year while Brazil raises cows on deforested land, and all of this is condoned, I think we have a long way to go.
I noticed this book at the store. It looked very interesting and certainly it's a large book. From a quick perusal, the book looked like it was mostly a discussion of empathy throughout the development of civilization. But in this discussion Rifkin is talking about scientific research. When I noticed this book, I also came across The Spirit Level which discusses the data showing egalitarian (low wealth disparity) societies have less problems than even the wealthiest non-egalitarian societies.
Jeremy Rifkin is on the right track and has written a profound book on the subject of empathy!! Thank you for posting this video.
It is time for us all to exercise our empathy and compassion to create a transformed world.
