Volt0m, the ''foundation'' layer at the bottom is 1/4'' - 1/2'' stone. The ''separation'' layer is 1/8'' - 1/4'' crushed stone. These two layers are just a few inches in depth.
The bulk of the filter is in the top 18'' depth of ''filter layer''. This is screened crushed rock that is up to 1/8'' in diameter (1/8'' being the maximum).
Is there a rock crusher near you? ...or a cement plant nearby? There you can get crusher dust material and screen it to proper size.
Nice, simple idea. Something you might want to look at is an article you can find if you paste the following into google: "sea shells used to clean up heavy metals"
I don't know whether adding a layer of crushed sea shells would be effective in improving biosand filters to remove heavy metals, but it's something to investigate.
I'm going to post this comment in a few places to help seed this idea, because I haven't seen anything being done with this.
On my recent trip we visited Jose in the D.R. who makes and distributes filters. He took us to a pit where sand is excavated from deep pockets, well below the surface, and explained to us that this is also clean and not contaminated and acceptable for the filter sand. ''Beach'' or ''near the surface'' construction sand is not.
As rock does not contain bacteria etc..it is necessary to use crushed rock. This is the waste left over from a crusher. In Haiti the road between Dominican and Cap Haitian , Haiti, was being rebuilt so we were able to obtain ''crusher dust'' and screen it as required.
great video! Where can i find a container like that big green one? and sorry i could only watch till 3:08 i had this overwhelming desire to run to the bathroom...lol
I think doing twice this process, would be much better qualit then just once. Then to the 2 big buckets with several layer from the top to the bottom: bigrocks charcoal smal rocks sand cotton charcoal small rocks bigrocks cotton
filtre fini- filter is finished notice diffuser on top to receive the water to be filtered
bon dlo- good water coming out
I hope to forward this to family in Haiti. Even if only for hurricane backup. Every home could use one.
I am told that the bio filter part of this does the real work. the medium just filters out the crude but the biologicals that build up over time breakdown the crud and make it safe- or add clorox and another receiver box to hold the slow filtered water until needed.
notice that the spigot is above the bucket but below the level of water in the bucket therefor the water level is actually forcing the water through the sand filter and out the spigot.
Diffuser- diffuser (first rough filter element also keeps the water from churning up the sand in the filter when you pour it through the diffuser :O) This is just the bottom of another bucket with holes punched in it
Awesome video !!! thank you for sharing this information !!!!!! Great music too !!!
love that you used a trash can !!! I am gunna try it !!! : )

Hi, Great video.
Can you let me know what type of sand you used?
Is it the sand we find on the beach or construction sand?
Thanks

Lave- wash 1/4" rock for the filter removes some of the dust before you put it into the filter to increase efficiency.
e barrel instale rock materyo an filtre- install the rock material in the filter notice the bigger pieces go in the bottom not the top
Next the separation layer 1/8"-1/4" wash and install again notice how high it fills the barrel
filtre fini- filter is finished notice diffuser on top to receive the water to be filtered

For those asking for a translation-
it is simple really.
Roch Kraze- Crushed stone
1/4"-1/2" applies to the size particles
Prepare materyo pou filtre- Prepare material for the filter.
echantiyonde rock kraze pou filter-
different sizes of crushed rock (or sand) required for the filter - from course to fine
separation layer 1/8"-1/4"(written in english on the paper)
Filter medium 0"-1/8"
dlo filtre- water filter(assembled)
