Here's some little known trivia that Frank Oz has neglected to mention when talking about the film: the test audience was made up of families. I'm dead serious. Warner Bros. greenlighted Little Shop of Horrors hoping to repeat the success of their recent hit The Gremlins, which was a dark, edgy family film. That's what went wrong: Warner's desire to make this a family-friendly musical comedy. You know when it was released in theaters? December 19th, 6 days before Christmas. God.
FYI: I purchased a dvd of the colored theater release from back in the 80's... it included snippets of the Original b/w horror "B" movie w/ a cameo by a young, Jack Nicholson. But it didn't include this scene or even Hint at it's existance. I wonder why??? Again Thanks! This was Fun!
@breadcrustcouncil - Many Thanks for posting this video! It was great to see. I'd love to see an all b/w version on dvd-( minus a minute or two of the Godzilla™ wreaks havok scenes.) ;-)
So... It looks like a version with this ending (in color no less) will see the light of day in 2012! An MPAA ratings update mentioned 'Little Shop of Horrors: The Intended Cut' as an 'Upcoming Home Video Release'! Can't wait... here's hoping there's at least a limited theatrical run.
you know the saddest part of this is A) Audrey's remix of somewhere green B) the idiotic people who bought the plants C) that poor dog that ran at the ending
But seriously, I heard a new DVD/BD combo special edition of the movie, that will include a restored version of the alternate ending, will be released around Halloween 2012.
The black-and-white really adds to the old-school monster movie vibe quite nicely, actually.
Objectively speaking, though, the "Don't Feed The Plants" sequence goes on way too long to be effective, and this is speaking as someone who saw the original movie in theaters back when I was in junior high (so, y'know, I'm old enough to actually HAVE an attention span, LOL). Maybe trim the instrumental/city rampage part a little, maybe a few less "bursting through brick walls" bits, I dunno...
@HeckfireOG Agreed, but judging by how much of the audio was still unfinished and shots drag on long in other scenes, I think they would have trimmed it down had it been used.
This is one of the most awesome ending. I like the part on 0:57 to 2:03 because of its sound. I love it. :) The sound of audrey getting captured and seymour saving her ROCKS!!
I've always been fascinated by this footage since buying the Cinefex issue covering the vfx in LSOH. This is THE best version I've seen on youtube, many thanks for putting it up! Your notes are fascinating too - I'd read that the colour negs/prints were lost in a fire, but if Geffen really does have the colour footage I hope he pulls his finger out pronto and does something with it!
i love this ending it makes alot more sense then the happy ending i mean i get why they changed it but i think they shouldve just went with this ending and see how other people would think of it i know they were trying to impress critics but more important then the critics is the main audience the ppl who buy the tickets to see this movie heck alot of ppl love this ending they should re release this movie with this ending
It could be a much greater possibility now for David Geffen to re-release this with the original ending given Hollywood is now restoring everything for HD and digital now. A full scale re-release would be great, but I'll be fine if it's a selected nights only sort of thing, like what Sony has been doing recently with "Ghostbusters" thru Facebook ticketing, and here in Canada, Cineplex theatres once a month present a Blu-Ray, sometimes 2K hard-drive, copy of classic movies.
they changed the ending and it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute!!!!!

Though I like both endings for the movie, this one definitely has more superior special effects.

I like how this ending is closer to the original musical. Although they should've had Seymour's death be a tad more heroic, like in the play.

at 1:26 when audrey is being eatin it sounds like rubber that sound effect needs to be cut out makes it sound like a rubber puppet.

Well the play and the movie is more of a dark comedy then a horror movie.
I say dark comedy because people died in it.

This is amazing. I want to watch the whole film in black and white with this ending. It'd be the best monster B-movie ever.

Well, I understand why they switched to the happy ending, but they couldn't have shown a variation of this happening in that ending?
