I agree. It's very irritating. It comes off sounding l like she doesn't really understand what he's saying. That interviewing style just doesn't work in English.
(On the other hand, a Japanese professor of his stature would smack her upside the head if she *didn't* do that while he was dropping his pearls of wisdom!)
The interviewer is so bloody annoying ! either interview the guy in Japanese and go ahead of the ええ、はい、ええ, or if you're going to go with English, just drop the bloody hum hum hum ! It ruins the whole effing interview !
