The Natives were extremely efficent in using animals. They used every peice of an animal. The bones, the fur, the meat and the skull. This is what makes the natives process of using animals as a rolemodel for today. So sad they are extinct. @benjamin9047 It depends on how you define a Native American. All the old cultures are functionally dead or near death. Language is culture and very few people with Native blood, even those more or less full blooded, speak the language of their ancestors fluently or live according to the old customs. If you define Native American by the blood people have, a large number of people living in the US are descended from them. I have some Cherokee blood myself although I'm mostly European.

The avg. life expectancy in 1900 for non white males in the USA was 32.54 yrs. Today the avg. life expectancy for non white males is 69.8 yrs. For natives from some communities that number is much lower.

@seanredsky First of its presumptive to say Native people would not have progressed without white help and the stats you present mean nothing without stating the conditions that existed at the time. First non-whites were relegated to the lower rung in society by a white power structure intent on never letting non-whites achieve progress. Jim Crow existed strongest in the south, but discrimination existed every where. In 1900 it was bigotry that affected that lower number.

But the Constitution requires the states and the Feds to adhere to all treaties to the letter, Article VI par 2. The US has to allow Native people their own self determination. The Natives were extremely efficent in using animals. They used every peice of an animal. The bones, the fur, the meat and the skull. This is what makes the natives process of using animals as a rolemodel for today. So sad they are extinct. @benjamin9047 It depends on how you define a Native American. All the old cultures are functionally dead or near death. Language is culture and very few people with Native blood, even those more or less full blooded, speak the language of their ancestors fluently or live according to the old customs. If you define Native American by the blood people have, a large number of people living in the US are descended from them. I have some Cherokee blood myself although I'm mostly European.

@palmapanfu I am a native and I can tell you for sure my friend, our ancestors way of life was much more difficult than our life is today. Life expectancy was much lower, any sickness which in modern times is relatively insignificant would almost certainly lead to death and at times an epidemic.
Our ancestors were strong people who were required to be prepared to fight for their existence every minute of their life. Be grateful my friend that you're alive today and not 300 yrs ago.

The avg. life expectancy in 1900 for non white males in the USA was 32.54 yrs. Today the avg. life expectancy for non white males is 69.8 yrs. For natives from some communities that number is much lower.

@seanredsky First of its presumptive to say Native people would not have progressed without white help and the stats you present mean nothing without stating the conditions that existed at the time. First non-whites were relegated to the lower rung in society by a white power structure intent on never letting non-whites achieve progress. Jim Crow existed strongest in the south, but discrimination existed every where. In 1900 it was bigotry that affected that lower number.

Still doesn't mean that Native American culture and political self determination no longer has a place in the world anymore. There is a reason your local grocer is now carrying bison meat next to the steaks and burger. There is also a reason the price of Bison meat has risen by 40% in the last two years in those same markets.

Im certainly not advocating for large corporations, pollution as a result of their operations, or additive filled food stuffs. I'm simply pointing out that the overall life expectancy now is much higher than it was prior. This is a result of modern living conditions and technology.
Unfortunately, many of my own family members blame white people for all their problems...its simply time to stop with that nonsense.

@seanredsky It is access to modern living conditions, which were denied earlier by bigotry. I don't blame whites for every problem faced by natives, some are self imposed. But the Constitution requires the states and the Feds to adhere to all treaties to the letter, Article VI par 2. The US has to allow Native people their own self determination. In New York where a 100 yr lease expired with the Seneca, the local whites whined due to having their rents raised. To bad so sad. We're learning.

@seanredsky there were many Natives prior to the industrial age that lived very healthy lifestyles and diets and lived well into old age...Our Ancestor's Agriculture was one of the main contributions to the world's increased life expectancey and their were many herbal and medicinal ingredients that western science borrowed or took credit for.
