I never stopped voting independent, I just veered off course with Obama. Otherwise, I'm incredibly proud to say my city, Rockford, IL, has an independent mayor. I cannot buy that "because a third party candidate won't win, I'll vote one/the other." No offense, but that's kind of a cop-out, and is a large reason why third parties cannot gain traction. Here in Illinois, we voted Blago in, but the Green party candidate did well enough to make Green an official third party here. I voted Green. :D
