It all comes down to the poverty, lack of opportunities, education and work that they suffered at the hands of the ruling upper and middle classes. And with recent government cuts hitting the working classes yet again , it will make more deprivation in this neglected city ! Hopefully it won't start like that again.
My great grandad(John Pennington) was the captain of the hope street gang in salford.He was arrested for assaulting a police officer as he stepped in to help his friend who had been stabbed and was being wrongly arrested,he says the police used to stand back and let them fight as they were scared,then they would arrest the injured,my great grandad recieved 6 months hard labour for his involvment.He went on to join the army and was killed in battle at YPRES in 1916
