Don't get why people are quick to conclude this was a fake:

- Sherpas can get to the top of Everest without oxygen. Climbers who've had long-term exposure to high altitudes have less trouble than others doing so. Many of these climbers practically grew up in the Himalayas.

- The Olympic Committee designed a special torch to burn with limited oxygen. It's not the same torch as those used during the other legs of the relay.

@ZhangtheGreat It doesn't matter how the torch is designed they can't redesign fire. Fire still need oxygen to survive and 1/3rd less oxygen isn't enough let alone the wind. There is no prayer flags or other momentos around like what is on top of the summit. Not to mention the horrible weather, and no notible signs of anything you would see on the summit such as surrounding mountains. Even though Sherpas are good climbers at altitude they are still moving to fast. It is fake.

Reinhold Messner, the first (with Peter Habeler) to reach the summit without supplementary oxygen (in 1978) said he couldn't stay up there but for a few minutes because the lack of oxygen just hurts so bad. That's from one widely considered the greatest mountain climber ever.

So obviously this large group of people is faking it.

@pancake221 that isn't correct. It is all to do with atmospheric pressure. There is plently of oxygen, but the pressure placed on the lungs is so great, so it is much harder to breath. Think about it, planes burn fuel much higher than this, and it isn't a problem, At this high, Atm press is only 1/3 to 1/4 as that of sea level.

Im no expert but i recently watched the discovery channel special on Everest and this does not look like what I saw.The ridge above the 'Hillary step" is really narrow only a foot wide. And NONE of them have oxygen masks, theres hardly any air up there how do you light a torch? The lack of oxygen masks gives it away for me, even if you dont know anything about climbing (which i dont know much honestly) I DO know that not everyone attempts without oxygen.

They are probably climbing one of the various routes from the Tibetan side, so this may be why it looks unfamiliar. Chinese climbers might not use the more popular SE ridge because they'd have to first cross into Nepal.

#1, its not the real olympic torch. #2 they would need a real lot of flammable substances to get that to light and stay lit considering it is even hard enough to breathe on everest that you need an air pack, and theyre all just walkin up like theyre fine.

The way that the flame was burning it suggested that the torch contained a pressurized oxygen cylinder.

Tibet is a Chinese province so its possible that they climbed Everest w/ the torch, though highly unlikely.

Look at any other Everest summit video on YouTube and you will see that the mountaineers are breathless and can barely speak a short sentence. These guys are speaking lengthy monologues and don't seem to be breathing heavy like on the other videos. There are no peaks in the background to prove they reached the summit because there is a convenient blizzard in the background. They could have filmed this at any point on the mountain.

The taking of the olympic tourch to the summit of Mount Everest is not staged, it is a fact which is easy to research on world-wide professional climbing sites. The whole expedition has been done twice, also a year before the olympics as a rehearsal. Special precautions have been taken by the chinesse to make this possible, including banning the climbing of other internation teams during the days the torch was being taken up on the chinesse side of Everest. Research before posting opinions!

I'm not so sure it is. I generally looked down upon those who champion conspiracy theories, but in this case the questions appear legitimate. The Chinese appear to have left no mementos or evidence at the summit which could prove their case, and many experts point to inconsistencies in their videos. I can't say conclusively that this is fake, but many things are strange and it would not be above the Chinese to fake this.

You can tell this is staged. There are no mementos to be seen from previous climbers. Every climber leaves something at the top. Too many people are walking too effortlessly without oxygen. All other Everest videos show people really laboring to take each step. And without oxygen, they would all be laboring for each breath, Leave it to the Chinese to fake this. Due to Olympic laws, the torch has to be lighted on the mountain Olympus and then never be put out. On this video, they are lighting the torch themselves on mt Everest - thus not being the Olympic torch!! LOOOL idiot chinese!! Of course they can call it "everest torch" but sure hell not Olympic torch!! LOL!!

IF this was real, they would have to carry the torch from mt. Olympus with it burning all the way, not putting it out.

However, at 1.47 , there is an unexpected "glitch" and the screen goes black.

When the image returns at 1:48, the climber is perfectly visible, and there is no sign of the fog.

I find it hard to believe that all that fog cleared in a matter of 2 seconds.

Futhermore, most people who have reached the summit suggest that it is very difficult to speak far cry from the voices we hear in the video. (bar presenters)

well there is oxygen, just little of it. Also, they could be using a special type of fuel to help the flame. Rockets use fuel that contains oxygen so it can burn in space.

Every reading is different and can vary by about 10m, wikipedia says 8848, extremescience. com says 8850, the numbers are different everywhere you look.
