Just got back from Nicaragua. It's a beautiful country, and remarkably friendly to Americans (given the number of times our government has taken a dump on them).
But the governmental institutions leave quite a bit to be desired.
Dude, It's okay....everyone out there who doesn't know. This is a fairly old piece of film of Eric Volz in Nicaragua. He was eventually released from prison in Nicaragua...The US gov. got involved and he was freed shortly after he was convicted; he did spend some 81 days I believe in the Nicaragua Prison though. But, this is an excellent eye opener to folks going over there to visit for any length of time...think about it.
Some of you don't seem aware of the current status - An appeals court overturned the conviction on December 17, 2007[1] and Volz was released from prison on December 21, 2007.[2] He left Nicaragua immediately and went into hiding in an unknown location outside Nicaragua over concerns for his physical safety.
As a Nicaraguan the i am this whole thing make me very shameful of how the system is in my own country.. I fell so bad about this guy, and now that he is free i feel better about it. But i don't want people from other country to think that, thats how Nicaraguan are. I can tell you that not everyone is like the stupid judge who didn't bother to see the evidence that this guy was not even in the city where the crime happen.
Sorry Volz family, i am glad your son is back home with his love ones.
I'm Nicaraguan and I just want to say that I'm very glad Eric is now free. I feel really bad just looking at the video as well as browsing through other websites with similar info regarding his case. There are people that are wrongfully accused everywhere in the world, especially here in the U.S. We see it in the news all the time. Don't judge Nicaragua people in general for the stupidity and ignorance of few.
MAN...that sucks..im from Nicaragua...but..shit happens...im not against Volz...the thing is...WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME..im glad that you'r out of prison..
Eric Volz is coming home! I just read in our local Placerville newspaper- the Mountain Democrat that "he was freed on December 21, 2007- from a Nicaraguan prison hospital where he was being treated for kidney stones. He then was driven by police-escorted ambulance to sign his release papers, then rushed to the airport. He left Nicaragua at 2:45 pm local time. His release came five days after a court ruling by a Nicaraguan court to reverse the 2006 murder conviction."
I just wish the U.S. law would learn to be more equal with people, just like the law of my home land. Nicaragua is and will always be a good example for many nations. Justice always prevail in my homeland, believe it or not, but right here is your prove.
I too am from nicaragua. I am very proud of my country and heritege but you have to understand that not all cases will be fair vertics even in the most equal country. And you must not say that some one is or isn't guilty if untill you've seen the all of the evidence.
The future: A book? A movie? Perhaps, but most importantly -- a strong clear voice, seared by real-life experience, that fights for injustice everywhere until his last breath.
More comedy (delay tactics: "The release papers were stapled wrong."). A prosecutor who invents new Nica law on the spot (that an accused must be imprisoned pending an appeal to the Nica Supreme Court). A strong, valiant mother reentering the lion's den. More from the men of truth. A final flight to freedom. Assassins suspected. Home.
What an odyssey! A brutal, senseless murder. The real culprit given full immunity. An innocent man accused. A bullet-proof alibi dismissed by a scared/corrupt/racist/stupid (pick one, or two) judge. Mob violence. An unjust conviction. Intentionally cruel prison treatment. Widespread media propaganda. Wild, almost comical claims (Eric's mother tried to bribe Doris' mom with $1M, etc.). A year in hell. Sudden justice from men of truth.
dont know if this dude is innocent or not but here in Nicaragua the case was played by the media as if Volz was Satan himself. The TV news broadcasts convicted him since the very start and the dat he left a newsman on channel 8 even mentioned him probably making jokes about how you can murder someone and then pay some money to get free. He should try to clear his name with people here perhaps. Even if from the US
I'm an American living ing Costa Rica. I know how they feel about "Gringos" here. All jealousy and envy. They love our money, but that's it. Being falsely accused of a crime and imprisoned here would be a nightmare. Nice to see that justice finally prevailed over envy.
not everyone feels that way mate, the thing is that here in Nicaragua, the media convicted him right away and you probably know how people are influenced by what they watch on tv read in the papers. I dont know if he really killed her or not but I can tell you most people here think good of americans, although you should have seen how the 2 biggest tv stations presented the story.
Nicaragua doesn't envy anyone, If you see your comrad was liberated, because Nicaragua's justice is one of the most fair in the world and their security is excellent. In the U.S. many innocent people have been put to death penalty and sometimes it might be for racism, one must put feet upon the terrain to realize the truth. My wish is that Nicaragua becomes strong economically again, and I'm sure it will.
mutediseas is right, Most of Nicaraguan people don't treat U.S. Americans bad, Everyone who visits that country can tell you, you can't compare Costa Rica with Nicaragua, Nicaragua has the lowest crime rate in the americas and that is an example of how civilized these people are, Nicaraguans are noble and hospitable people, the same treatment they give to their own people, that's the treatment they give to pilgrims.
Have not heard any news today. Was in Nicaragua a few days ago and met many nice people from Managua to LaPaz to Leon. Set Eric free judge and sign the documents.
Thank God he is free i just heard in the News, i live in Virginia and i was expecting this day, Finally my waiting is finish. God Bless you and Come to your contry.
yes it is true that Volz is free and hopefully he makes it back safe to the U.S.. I am from nicaragua and ashame that my country waited this long to let him go free.
I learned of Eric Volz because of Phil Keaggy's podcast. I am so thankful to learn that according to CNN an appeals court has overturned the conviction. At this writing, he is not yet free, but hopefully will be released very soon!
I am an American with Nicaraguan parents. I have to say that it is no secret that the justice system in Nicaragua is weak and corrupt. Erick now that you are free leave Nicaragua and God's Speed.
Everyone, I thought you would welcome the news that Erik is out of jail. I believe he was released today. Maybe now We'll see less hate messages posted about Nicaragua. So there, bitches.
Hey,,,I´m Nicaraguan and Proud of it,,,,But,unfortunately,,not all of NicaraguanS have the pride and Honesty that most of us have, I have never taken sides whit the Yankee government,,but this is not the U.S we´re fighting,,this is, in my opinion an inoccent man, as far as evidence shows, and if he´s not inocent!!...God Danm, prove it!! and let him pay if he´s guilty, and if he is not guilty FREE HIM NOW!!! Let´s all pray for real Justice For Beautiful Doris(R.I.P) an Eric.
I watched this on t.v. It was crazy because the judge threw out all his evidence that proved he was innocent. This is immoral.THAT MAN DESERVES TO BE FREE!!!!!!!!!!
This can happen anywhere, but everything is a process, if this guy is innocent I'm sure that everything will be alright; I believe if this would've happened in the U.S. and the guy was Latin or black; the guy would be put to death penalty; the law here is not equal either, they are still priorities and that's wrong, but if this guy is innocent, I hope everything gets settled, because I believe that justice has to be equal.
Thank you for keeping this enormous injustice on the radar screen. This is a magnificently-produced video. While I curse the Nicaraguan system that did this to him, I have to admit that the US government committing injustices worldwide doesn't help victims like Eric.
Agree. The US regime is absolutely injust, however the one's who pay are innocent civilians like Eric. 2 wrongs do not make a right, and US policy doesn't justify the horrendous injustice from the Nicaraguan authorities. However, the Bush and who'se following regime should start adressing injustices taking place from the US system
eric volz is innocent and i could prove it with all the evidence that is going toward the other 2 peple and plus if the mom hated eric so bad why did she let him carry the casket and only 4 people got to carry too. and im also his cousin. i know everything about eric i lok at his site a whole lot just to check up on him. ive made multi-media presentations for california and entered a contest and i won it was about eric.
I feel that this matter has become political rather than criminal.
I could see that the sensationalist newspaper publishing the news and instigating against Eric was one of the government's newspapers.
However, I am a believer that the US government could still do something if they want. I would try to get this news into a national news paper or a national television channel to get the attention of the US population.
Dateline NBC has been following this story, that's how I became aware of it. I wrote my senators and they wrote back to tell me that Eric's family's senator, Lamar Alexander was taking the lead on this, and it is professional courtesy to let him deal with it, as he is the one they are working with.
Trust me I feel 4 Eric, but where there's no money 2 be made the USA looks the other way & that's the sad reality. I will pray 4 Eric, but we should start praying 4 the USA as well
Im going 2 be blunt. Innocent he is, its injustice it is, should he B free, most defiantly U can not expect the same laws as in America to B the same in other country's no matter the injustice. U.S is in IRAQ isn't it injustice for the Iraqi people? They die everyday. Where's the petition 4 them, where's the justice? Celebrities & the rich get away with a slap on the risk, justice?
Once you leave America, our government has no influence upon the judicial decisions of countries like Nicaragua. Sorry Eric that you went there, I will write and telephone my reps in NY to try to help you, but I doubt it will change anything.
Not only was that a bullshit ass system he went through but if our "president" even gave a damn about the people he would be bustin his ass day and night to get him out!
I am from Managua and unfortunately, it is ashame of how the Nicaraguan government is handling this. I believe he is innocent and it's sad that our country have found him guilty with no evidence, i'm sorry and my prayers are with Volz family.
To all the people who say america sucks...be glad you live here and not someplace else. For all our flaws and our own judicial tragities of years past, at least today no one is railroaded into prison like this guy was.
My wife is from Nicaragua. She is completely disgusted with this incredible injustice and feels very sorry for Eric and his family. Our prayers are with them.
Too bad the American Govt. cannot intervene, but the Nicaraguan Govt. doesn't seem to want anything to do with America, anyway.
Hopefully something will be done in the not-to-distant future to correct this ridiculous injustice.
I have been there on missionary trips, and the whole place is dirty. We found out the local government was taking 30% of the money we as a church were sending to our outreach there. Do it Reagan style. Cut off all US Aid, stop imports from their country, and stop US citizens from entering the country, and expel all of their citizens who are here on work or student visas. I am not racist, but I believe in punishing those who deserve it. One bad apple spoils it for the whole bunch.
not to mention her store was ransacked and robbed, Eric is a wealthy successful person. why would he stick around and loot her store? absolutely ridiculous.
I just heard about Eric's plight for the first time today while listening to an old Phil Keaggy podcast. I am heartsick. Thoughts and prayers from Northern Illinois go out to Eric and his family. I pray that God will intervene and justice will prevail.
It's horrible just reading some of the letters Eric has sent back about the scarce quantity of food, the deplorable conditions, the screaming maniacs at night keeping him up....my Gosh..i agree with angelinlulu....FREE ERIC VOLZ ALREADY NICARAGUA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pshh easier said then done the goverment done there is awful it the country it self is corrupted but you must understand my country is nothin but we try to make the most of it
Arrogance is a very strong word for someone who is likely sitting in their living room, with their laptop, with their rights protected by our government. Educate yourself, for Eric was not arrogant. Injustice has no borders. There are many of us who have traveled the world, and in no country I have visited is injustice well tolerated. The guilty shall be punished, the innocent, however, should be free. An injustice of grave proportions has occured here, so who is it that is arrogant?
Just a quick technical point about the "evidence" introduced at the trial that I've seen on here. First, a suspect who was granted immunity testified that Eric was in the town at the time she was murdered. That is "evidence". The issue is how much weight should that evidence be given? What is the credibility of that witness? Who is he? What is his history? What did he have to gain or lose in this criminal prosecution? What did he receive for his testimony?
I hope that Nicaragua gets there DNA and evidence straight. If they had done that from the get go. We'd either have a free innocent man or a guilty man who deserves to be where he is. As for the comment made from xtrateddancemoves, you are an idiot for saying to boycott products from here. Nicaraguan ppl never did nothing to this man, the Nicaraguan Judge and prosecuter did.
Im Nicaraguan and I strongly believe that this judge was strongly incompentent and needs to be put down como una perra de le que es ella. I bet you the sandinista had lots to do with her decision. The law says to provide evidence in your trial in order to prove your innocense, adviously this judge never gave Eric a chance to do this.
I am so sadden by this news. I am originally from Nicaragua but i am living in California. My most deepest ssimpathy goes to his parent i feel sad and disgusted with the Nicaraguan goverment. Is a shame this poor men is paying for something he did not commited. I will pray for his freedom because i can not imagine him going throught this. There jail conditions are horrible bottom line.
This makes you want to scream! In Nicaragua and other similar countries, it's just not the same. There is a lot of corruption and it seems as though the judge has been scared into doing what the public and those in power want her to do. You are in my prayers Eric.
I just heard about Eric's plight from Phil Keaggy. Eric's Dad, Jan Eric Volz was a founding member of the Christian band, the 77's. The injustice of this case is unbelievable! Only God, and the prayers and support of those who care will deliver him from the hands of his captors.
I am Nicaraguan. I lived there when I was younger and I have family there. Nicaragua has a very corrupt government. Eric did not 'put himself in harms way', (unless you consider going to Nicaragua putting yourself in harms way). But I am sad to admit, that at the moment, I am not proud to be Nica~
People please sign the petition to help Eric receive the help he needs from the US. Please contact me for the address or look it up on google. Thanks!
I invite all Nicaraguans to search our souls and ask our goverment to stop this injustice. Show the world our friendliness and don't be afraid of our governors and judicial system. Finally, assure the world that is ok to visit our country and they don't need to be afraid of our judicial system. GOD BLESS Nicaragua and America.
To believe in the Nicaraguan justice system is like trying to believe that we will make good choices when selecting a president. Something like this, will have never happened in America. Here, we believe in equal rights and we feel secured that if were acused of a crime we will get a fair trial (this also includes Nicaraguans). This goes to show the world that we need help learning about justice, investigation and foresic science.
People please sign the petition to help Eric receive the help he needs from the US. Please contact me for the address or look it up on google. Thanks!
People please sign the petition to help Eric receive the help he needs from the US. Please contact me for the address or look it up on google. Thanks!
I'll tell a Congressman - but we all know what good that does around here. 65% of the American people wanted to end the war in Iraq and we got 30,000 more troops sent in...Good Luck Eric
For this poor girls mother to insight a riot and use Eric's race to promote a uprising on him was doing nothing but inevitably putting shame on her daughters grave.
This case has unfortunately turned into an issue of race, not of a poor girl who was brutally taken from this earth. That judge had no idea what kind of injustice she has done for the true victim of this crime. The girl. She has been side stepped. Not only is the real killer still out there her own country she has been used as a scapegoat to fuel the fire of racism.
I feel for Eric and his family, the travesty that has occurred is beyond injustice. I have felt the wrath racism for being the foreigner (gringa). Carrying the stigma of being white in a foreign country can sometimes be hard to bear. Please do not misread this as wholly negative. But if you have ever traveled and spent a long amount of time in certain countries there is some mistrust of any type of person who is not of there own race.
The judge and the prosecutor are both incompetent. Where the hell did they get a degree ? There was absolutely not evidence to prove hiim guily...Oh yeah a drunken liar who's testimony was chosen over 10 credible people..Yeah...
I can't believe there is nothing that the US can do to help Eric. How can an American citizen be wrongly imprisoned in another country? I think the judge was afraid for her own life if she gave a "not guilty" verdict. Not only did the real criminal get away free - the criminals are in the court system as well!!
the people of nicaraqua should feel shame ,,embarassed,,and disgraced by this... get out on the streets and scream for this poor guys release..do the right thing..dont stand by and watch this happen..this is injustice at its highest degree
Who ever thinks Eric got a fair trial has to be out of their mind. I just hope he is freed before he is killed in there, this is so unbelieveable the judge made her decision in 20 minutes. WHAT IS HAPPENING OVER THERE? THE JUDGE TO ME DOES NOT STRIKE ME AS BEING A PROFESSIONAL.
I feel so bad for this man. Being accused of a horrible crime that you did not commit and have an intire country against you is the worst thing i could ever imagine happening to someone. My heart goes out to you and hopefull soon he will be free and justice will be served. It's so sad.
People. People. People. I have traveled all over the world. Not alot but many places. It is ARROGANT (read my lips) to say to a foriegn goverment..."you have to be like America". Fairness is NOT a right. And again, the concept of fairnness as a right elsewhere in the world simply doesn't exist. Eric put himself in harm's way.
So it's ignorant to expect people to treat each other with decenty and to try to find out what really happened, yet not ignorant to randomly point fingers so SOMEONE is punished... please explain your logic.
Please Nicaragua! Give Eric Volz a new chance! Get a new judge! The past is past! Let's move on to a brighter future. Nicaragua is a beautiful country and I know great people from there! I would someday like to visit. I know you will do the right thing! I have faith in you my friend!
The real killer was probably infatuated with Doris Alvarado for a long time and was angry that she wouldn't give him the time of day and may have even ignored him. That, plus her dating an American probably infuriated him to the point of what he did.
I would like to see the arrogant judge, who has obviously never carried a coffin, carry one and see just how she has no accountably. Don't forget that those who judge will be judged! The real killer is also still free to kill again!
Do a simple experiment. Get a coffin and have people carry it the same way. Look at all their shoulders before and after. They will have the marks as Eric. The carriers of the coffin with Eric were related to the Mom, so they wouldn't say "I had the same marks!"
i think there needs to be some initiative to include the mother of the victim in a dialogue to open the case for more evidence.....maybe see who the real murderer of her daughter was...maybe in a one-on-one dialogue she can be more reasonable
I saw Eric on a program yesterday as he was being interviewed in prison. It was carried on MSNBC. While the entire trial before the Judge amounts to a a total miscarriage of justice, what I fail to understand is why there was no mention made of DNA which would conclusively establish guilt or innocence. This is what really astounded me since the victim was brutally raped.
"Further, the prosecution failed to establish that Doris had been raped, making Eric's conviction for that crime equally unsupportable." NONE of the blood, fluid, hair collected at the scene had any tie to Eric. This guy was the first SUSPECT arrested but was given immunity with all charges dropped when he agreed to testify against Eric. Any1 would agree to point the finger at someone else to get away with murder!
¡AMEN
NO reason and NO accountability! Did all the people that Eric was with at the time of the murder, lie? Of course not! The mom never liked Eric, that's obvious! For the people who knowingly bared false witness, you need to come clean, or you will surely go to hell! Can we Americans do nothing to end this great injustice? I think we can! We need our President to expedite prisoner (Eric Volz) from Nicaragua! SO SAY US ALL! AMEN!
Crimes commited in another country are to have their punishment carried out in that country in accordance to it's laws. Was the trial fair? With absolutly no evidence linking him to it of course not, but should we impose ourselves on another country and demand he be set free? No thats not right either. A re-trial would be best, where at least some shred of evidence be compared instead of denieng all evidence off a racial hatred for Americans.
don't get so wrong agaist my contry, we know there's a lot of american like to go visit Nicaragua, please respect the countries, because not to everybody like to talk bad about your own country, so people please respect the countries, and watch your mouth, and I feel sorry for him if he is innocent, buy if he's not he's fuckkkkkkkk, I am from Nicaragu... 100% nica.
The deal is that no evidence linking him to the crime was provided, not a single bit. All of the forensic evidence, witness statements, etc said he WAS NOT at the scene. The woman was raped before she was murdered that leaves DNA evidence. How hard would it be to compare it to a Eric's dna and get your answer of wether he did or did not rape her thus placing him at the crime.
The facts are the facts, there is no way he could have commited that horrific murder. The US should really step in and put some pressure on the authorities there.
My family and I are praying for his release. I can't imagine how hard it must be for him to get through the day(s). Our thoughts are with him. Hopefully there will be an update on appeal process soon?
Eric stay strong. It is obvious that the only thing guilty is this injustice. If anyone who needs to go jail is that stupid "judge" who threw away evidence and sided with that whino local criminal instead of 10 credible witness. If only we can grab that coffin and show her how it can cause scratches on back. I hate to see people wrongly accused. A Drunk David Hasselhoff chomping on a burger on the floor would have made a better judge that that stupid corrupt judge.
I agree. The imprisonment of people, with scant or little evidence is the most horrible thing that could happen. But in this case, among other things, rape was alleged. There's no forensic evidence, linking him to this murder. Now that Ortega is in power, maybe the Contras, still remembers Ronald Reagans atrocities in Nicaragua.
Noel Martín Corea has been suspended of his duties at the "Laboratorio Central de Criminalística (LCC)" for mistakes he caused in the Volz case. It was determined that there was no presence of semen present, anal, vaginal, or on the sheets. There was no blood found under the girls nails, however blood was found on the sheets of type "O+". Corea had originally released that Volz was blood type "O+". However to the surprise of the judge Volz was actually type "A" blood.
lestrada, do you have an update on the appeal? I would like for this to have a good ending for Eric, but there's hardly any info as to the progress of the case. I would appreciate it if you could bring us up to date. thanks
Frankoba: I know as much as you do about the appeal. The info about Noel Corea being suspended I got from a the forums at therealnicaragua d o t com. Someone posted it with a link to the original article.
Wrongful imprisonment is bad everywhere. In this case as well as all the people the US Government are holding without trial in Guantanamo Bay Prison. Whether they are guilty or not, everyone should have the right to a fair trial. It seems both the USA and the Nicaraguan Government's make up their own rules for this.
Please! Don't defile this venue describing the injustice to my friend Eric Volz and the Nicaraguan people. Take your hate of America to other venues. Show a little compassion, without the "buts". USA or Nicaraguan government actions had no bearing on Eric's injustice. Sloppy police, zealuous prosecutor, fearful judge, mobilzed mob, lying press convict the "gringo" - how racist? Nicaraguan people speak out against this justice. You are judged under that same system.
I hate to say it, but I'm starting to think Americans need to stay at home and keep our business here too. It seems every time we try to reach out, something unbelievable like this happens. We do it because it's good business; they accept it because it's good economics. But when the economic development doesn't spread to everyone's benefit, we (not the local government) become the easy target. There's another "Nicaragua" just a border away.
The story is in Men's Journal for June... the media in the US does the same thing the Nicaraguan media did all the time, sensationalizing a dramatic story. Fortunately, we stopped forming lynch mobs in the 50's.
This is a very sad story. His family and associates are supportive, yet should have warned their son/friend against dallying with local girls in a foreign country. This is a hostile time for Americans. This should be a warning to young travelers to STAY HOME and STAY ALIVE! The evidence does not look good either. I hope he gets a retrial.
This is one of the most appalling things I've ever seen. My thoughts go to Eric's family and friends. If all of the 93,000+ people who had viewed this felt that they could donate one dollar to help that would go along way to ensuring Eric's safe return. So, don't get that bar or chocolate or bag of chips, miss just one out of your day and use that $ to do something really worth while.
Xenophobia posted here will only make the Nicaraguan people and goverment dig in their heels. What is needed instead is lots of thoughtful attention focused on the facts of the case. The more people fan the flames posting anti-Nicaragua sentiment, the harder it'll be for Eric to get out.
How about lets do the guy a favor and keep negative comments to ourselves.
you know at firs I thought eff it.. Heres "grino" whos been worngly accused... You know how many black folk have been wrongly accused and imprisned or even killed. So... whats one grino and why should I care... but after that thought I know that even in the mist of all the injustices blk flok have went though you wouldnt wish that on n e one... I hope and pray that let you out bro.
-every congressman/senator needs to be contacted-i will be contacting my represenatives-as this is a political problem-lets spread the facts-everyone send chain-help/pray notes on the internet for him-
u wanna buy a house in nicaragua.. i can sell you mine..u r wrong about nicaragua, the media is sensationalizing things as always..you will see that eric will go free.and NO, people in nicaragua DO NOT hate americans...what you see in the news are ignorant people
this man is innocent, but people in this board act like this is the 1st time this ever happend. Dog the bounty hunter is probably going 2 do time in Mexico. In the Philippines a innocent American is doing life. ETC.. thanks 2 our leaders us Americans arent liked throughout the whole world U can ask anyone who travels that. THey love our money but hate us.
it's obvious he's innocent guys, but i would appreciate no more anti-Nica comments...u see we are not all like that. this whole thing are the reactions of the lower class in nicaragua and does not speak for those of us who are educated and may happen to also be american! i agree 100% that he should be freed and am doing what i can to ensure that happens. so let's stop w/the anti-everything attitude bc that is not what eric went to nicaragua to do..he wanted to join people, not tear them apart..
Nicaragua, Rivas, and the Nicaraguan culture and people are wonderful and beautiful. i am a right wing captalist in Sandinista Rivas and i get along just fine. I quarrel, gossip, celebrate, and work with my neighbors and know and trust them better than when i lived in Eugene Oregon. i hope if this guy is innocent he is freed on appeal. but his guilt or innocence is not up to his parents, america, dateline or popular vote.
i am a gringo home owner in Rivas where the trial took place, i have a few comments. 1. neither i, dateline, or any of the commenters know if he is innocent or not. 2. the person that said nicaragua is a product of america so of course it is corrupt is an idiot. 3. due process is defined by the laws of the country you are in. if you are a travelling gringo you need to accept you are not special.
Unfair, in the U.S. a Terrorist Luis Posada Carriles Walks Free thanks to U.S. justice and in Nicaragua an innocent man's life is juggled by Nicaraguan justice. Unfair for Eric and unfair for those who died at the hands of Luis Posada Carriles. Within hours that Posada Carriles is placed in liberty and sent home via private jet, another terrorist kills numerous innocent people at VTech. Volz is innocent and in jail, Posada is free and killed many. What is Justice these days???
Not to mention the fact the mother is looking for media attention so she will say whatever to the media. He was convicted in the court of public opinion just on the pure hate they feel for white people. It is a shame considering he was there to help them.
Anyone in the legal field will tell you that in the US and in the world of common sense this is a travesty. These charges would have never been brought against Eric. The minor "evidence" is circumstantial. I was shocked that this is going on and am forwarding emails and sending letters in support of Eric.
Is there an update to this video. I am going to Nicaragua in the next 3 weeks. Is there anything I can do?

Comment Part III:
The future: A book? A movie? Perhaps, but most importantly -- a strong clear voice, seared by real-life experience, that fights for injustice everywhere until his last breath.
Everything happens for a reason.
islander511 4 years ago
Comment Part II:
More comedy (delay tactics: "The release papers were stapled wrong."). A prosecutor who invents new Nica law on the spot (that an accused must be imprisoned pending an appeal to the Nica Supreme Court). A strong, valiant mother reentering the lion's den. More from the men of truth. A final flight to freedom. Assassins suspected. Home.
islander511 4 years ago
Comment Part I:
What an odyssey! A brutal, senseless murder. The real culprit given full immunity. An innocent man accused. A bullet-proof alibi dismissed by a scared/corrupt/racist/stupid (pick one, or two) judge. Mob violence. An unjust conviction. Intentionally cruel prison treatment. Widespread media propaganda. Wild, almost comical claims (Eric's mother tried to bribe Doris' mom with $1M, etc.). A year in hell. Sudden justice from men of truth.
islander511 4 years ago
Eric was finally released, but is currently in hiding until he can leave the country because of death threats against him.
Salsassin 4 years ago
dont know if this dude is innocent or not but here in Nicaragua the case was played by the media as if Volz was Satan himself. The TV news broadcasts convicted him since the very start and the dat he left a newsman on channel 8 even mentioned him probably making jokes about how you can murder someone and then pay some money to get free. He should try to clear his name with people here perhaps. Even if from the US

The only one that should have to clear their name is the crooked judge that convicted him. That woman belongs in prison.

I'm an American living ing Costa Rica. I know how they feel about "Gringos" here. All jealousy and envy. They love our money, but that's it. Being falsely accused of a crime and imprisoned here would be a nightmare. Nice to see that justice finally prevailed over envy.
elperropatron 4 years ago
not everyone feels that way mate, the thing is that here in Nicaragua, the media convicted him right away and you probably know how people are influenced by what they watch on tv read in the papers. I dont know if he really killed her or not but I can tell you most people here think good of americans, although you should have seen how the 2 biggest tv stations presented the story.
mutedisease 4 years ago
Nicaragua doesn't envy anyone, If you see your comrad was liberated, because Nicaragua's justice is one of the most fair in the world and their security is excellent. In the U.S. many innocent people have been put to death penalty and sometimes it might be for racism, one must put feet upon the terrain to realize the truth. My wish is that Nicaragua becomes strong economically again, and I'm sure it will.
vozdloco 4 years ago
mutediseas is right, Most of Nicaraguan people don't treat U.S.

Agree. The US regime is absolutely injust, however the one's who pay are innocent civilians like Eric. 2 wrongs do not make a right, and US policy doesn't justify the horrendous injustice from the Nicaraguan authorities.

An injustice of grave proportions has occured here, so who is it that is arrogant?
hammchic 4 years ago
Just a quick technical point about the "evidence" introduced at the trial that I've seen on here. First, a suspect who was granted immunity testified that Eric was in the town at the time she was murdered. That is "evidence". The issue is how much weight should that evidence be given? What is the credibility of that witness? Who is he? What is his history? What did he have to gain or lose in this criminal prosecution? What did he receive for his testimony?

To believe in the Nicaraguan justice system is like trying to believe that we will make good choices when selecting a president. Something like this, will have never happened in America. Here, we believe in equal rights and we feel secured that if were acused of a crime we will get a fair trial (this also includes Nicaraguans). This goes to show the world that we need help learning about justice, investigation and foresic science.

LeslieRivillo 4 years ago
I feel for Eric and his family, the travesty that has occurred is beyond injustice. I have felt the wrath racism for being the foreigner (gringa). Carrying the stigma of being white in a foreign country can sometimes be hard to bear. Please do not misread this as wholly negative. But if you have ever traveled and spent a long amount of time in certain countries there is some mistrust of any type of person who is not of there own race.

I saw Eric on a program yesterday as he was being interviewed in prison. It was carried on MSNBC. While the entire trial before the Judge amounts to a a total miscarriage of justice, what I fail to understand is why there was no mention made of DNA which would conclusively establish guilt or innocence. This is what really astounded me since the victim was brutally raped.
falasteensadiqa 4 years ago
"Further, the prosecution failed to establish that Doris had been raped, making Eric's conviction for that crime equally unsupportable." Crimes commited in another country are to have their punishment carried out in that country in accordance to it's laws. Was the trial fair? With absolutly no evidence linking him to it of course not, but should we impose ourselves on another country and demand he be set free? No thats not right either. A re-trial would be best, where at least some shred of evidence be compared instead of denieng all evidence off a racial hatred for Americans.

DarkBunnyLord 4 years ago 2
The facts are the facts, there is no way he could have commited that horrific murder. The US should really step in and put some pressure on the authorities there.

I agree let him go. but don't FUCK Nicaragua.

My family and I are praying for his release. I can't imagine how hard it must be for him to get through the day(s). Our thoughts are with him. Hopefully there will be an update on appeal process soon?

What the hells going on? I thought he would be out by now and was searching for a youtube video of him free all ready.

Eric is innocent but due to the global anti-American atmosphere that GW created, he was convicted for being an American.

A Drunk David Hasselhoff chomping on a burger on the floor would have made a better judge that that stupid corrupt judge.
ffxisthebest 4 years ago

I would appreciate it if you could bring us up to date. thanks
frankoba 4 years ago
Frankoba: I know as much as you do about the appeal. The info about Noel Corea being suspended I got from a the forums at therealnicaragua d o t com. Someone posted it with a link to the original article.

Wrongful imprisonment is bad everywhere. In this case as well as all the people the US Government are holding without trial in Guantanamo Bay Prison. Whether they are guilty or not, everyone should have the right to a fair trial. It seems both the USA and the Nicaraguan Government's make up their own rules for this.
wombatvvv 4 years ago
You are judged under that same system.
effie38 4 years ago
Bottom line, if you want to make an impact forget asking the US government to apply pressure, target the US businesses doing business in Nicaragua.
flaal44 4 years ago
I hate to say it, but I'm starting to think Americans need to stay at home and keep our business here too. It seems every time we try to reach out, something unbelievable like this happens. We do it because it's good business; they accept it because it's good economics. But when the economic development doesn't spread to everyone's benefit, we (not the local government) become the easy target. There's another "Nicaragua" just a border away.
flaal44 4 years ago
The story is in Men's Journal for June... the media in the US does the same thing the Nicaraguan media did all the time, sensationalizing a dramatic story. Fortunately, we stopped forming lynch mobs in the 50's.
flaal44 4 years ago
This is a very sad story. His family and associates are supportive, yet should have warned their son/friend against dallying with local girls in a foreign country. This is a hostile time for Americans. This should be a warning to young travelers to STAY HOME and STAY ALIVE! The evidence does not look good either. I hope he gets a retrial.

yessenia1988 4 years ago

Man what ever happen to DNA and the 21 century technology.
I guess Nicaragua has a big problem now on there hand. This by far is outrageous form of injustice.
With all of the evidence at hand. Why?
Can they see? I guest they just don't know what justice is or what evidence is.
The Nicaragua goverment and police department should be liable for this.
Not because your an american but because is in injustice period. Hanged in there Eric.
The world will see this. Your Innocent. Not guilty.

Can someone from Eric's family give us an update on Eric's appeal? Is it true that an appeal is in progress as we speak? Thanks.
P.s. I am having difficulties writing to Eric. Nothing happens when I get to the page where I would enter my name and comment.

this man is innocent, but people in this board act like this is the 1st time this ever happend.

I quarrel, gossip, celebrate, and work with my neighbors and know and trust them better than when i lived in Eugene Oregon. i hope if this guy is innocent he is freed on appeal. but his guilt or innocence is not up to his parents, america, dateline or popular vote.
gcblues 4 years ago
buenas,
i am a gringo home owner in Rivas where the trial took place, i have a few comments. 1. neither i, dateline, or any of the commenters know if he is innocent or not. 2. the person that said nicaragua is a product of america so of course it is corrupt is an idiot. 3. due process is defined by the laws of the country you are in. if you are a travelling gringo you need to accept you are not special.

It is a shame considering he was there to help them.
hollyhobby79 4 years ago
Anyone in the legal field will tell you that in the US and in the world of common sense this is a travesty. These charges would have never been brought against Eric. The minor "evidence" is circumstantial. I was shocked that this is going on and am forwarding emails and sending letters in support of Eric.
