Cromwell was an ideological tyrant and a dictator! What I find very interesting is, that as all dictators of our time, he justifies his rule of darkness by evoking better and a brave new world: " I will liberate men's souls from the darkness of ignorance, I will build schools and universities for all, this will become a golden age of learning, I will bring the law within the reach of every common man, there will be work and bread for all, this nation will prosper"! We know what that means!
"Villains and godless self seeking ambitious tricksters, no more capable of conducting the affairs of this nation than you are of running a brothel" This speech could have been made in parliament today. It applies just as much today as it did then.
When Charles II was crowned Cromwell's body was dug up and his head stuck on a spike at Traitor's Gate at the Tower of London. The mace he threw on the floor is the same one in the House of Commons today. It still bears the dent Cromwell caused on it when he threw it to the floor.
It is inspiring to the English, giving confidence to be brave and make a stand for our rights against British rule but to do it in a more potent fashion next time and it would have more importantly had more significance to the Norman yolk as they would then be more aware of an English uprising when they push the enslavement too far i.e. more caution would be in effect after that rebellion and a fear of the English getting it right in the future would be there in the near future.
@CelticAndProud, yes I understand Wat was killed but it wasn't meaningless as you seem to suggest, as it inspires other English to make a stand for their rights, to show bravery against the British state and it learns us that the British state is a potent bullying sinister ruler of course and so we need far more Wat Tyler's than one to win against such an anti-English nasty potent ruler as the British state. Wat Tyler's revolt in that respect, if we learn from our history, is inspiring.
@IngyEnglishman As a symbolic thing, I agree with you, it shows that the people can rise up, but other than that the unfortunate truth is that it had no significance. At least not that I'm aware of.
Oh how England needs an Oliver Cromwel or Wat Tyler type saviour figure right now... I suppose all us English have to now be that figure ourselves and we will be.
@IngyEnglishman England awaken indeed. However....I'll pass on having a theocracy where partying too much during Christmas could be punished. One dictator is the same as all dictators in the end.
@1Atomtan "One dictator is the same as all dictators in the end." Wrong, Cromwell was not corrupt like other dictator, and he was only doing what was best for England.
@MrGilles1990 Cromwell was a religious fanatic. Any good he did was overridden by his attempted theocracy and religious zealotry. All dictators are the same. They feel fine telling others how to live. Cromwell was a great leader from a military stand point, but I'll pass on the theocracy.
And now we have people like Ed Miliband...good god

@IngyEnglishman you aware that Wat didn't actually achieve anything with his death? Unfortunately it was just business as usual when he got killed.
