Just to justify my comments as they seem to have been taken the wrong way :-
If you had read my answer properly you will notice I said "a bit more rehearsal". I thought that this tune would have counted towards a rehearsal due to it's ropey nature. What I also meant "sticking to traditional tunes", was that the band did not seem to know this one so should stick to ones they do know properly for the benefit of the audience.
PS this is more "English Folk" than Jazz anyway - IMHO
Sadly, Longhairedgimp is a very apt name for you when you come out with comments such as these.
In my humble opinion its fantastic to see a band such as Jazzquitessence tackling such a wide variety of material and having a fresh "modern" sound. What actually is or is not authentic?
Traditional tunes were once contemporary tunes of the day circa 1915 and unfortunately they are still being churned out by jazz bands of today hence making jazz so unappealing to younger audiences.
Well, if you read the info, you will notice that I said we hadn't rehearsed and some of us hadn't even met before the gig. If I added a trumpet or clarinet the band would no longer be a quintet and I would have to rename it. I'm not after authenticity (whatever you mean by that; I'm assuming you mean copying someone elses "original" version), we're just playing our music to people who want to hear it. We play a wide variety of material from Bix Beiderbecke to Herbie Hancock. :-)
A good effort but maybe needs a bit more rehearsal. Sax and piano are the best. Think a trumpet is needed, to be a bit more authentic and possibly a clarinet. Maybe the band should stick to more traditional tunes.
