Map of the World Part I, from "No Borders Here", is another fantastic Siberry song. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform live twice -- once in Hamilton just after Mimi hit the charts and once at the Ontario Place Forum after "The Speckless Sky" came out. Awesome performer, great music.
Is it just me, or does that last verse (the one about the "10 men of the Kremlin") predict the fall of the Soviet Union about 5 years before it happened (this song was part of an album relesed in 1985.)
BTW, does anyone remember the live video of this song. It was recorded as part of her "Speckless Sky" tour in 1985 and I have always wondered if the entire show was ever available.
If she was using anything at this time it was the Synclavier. Jane was the go to person on the Synclavier in much the same way Kate Bush was on the Fairlight CPI.
You missed the point. The point isn't about the hardware. The point was that she still used the same stereotypical sampled sounds everyone else was using. Doesn't matter if it's a Fairlight CMI, Synclavier, Emulator or whatever. They all had that orchestra hit sound as one of the stock programs.
And btw, the orchestra hit DID originate from the Fairlight.
I managed to get a VHS copy of the show you are talking about-they sometimes come up on eBay. I wrote to Jane/Issa to try and get another copy and she doesn't even have one now!
That's too bad :-( The live video for Map of the World II looks like was an AWESOME live show :-D
Somewhere I think I have a copy of Rolling Stone from 1985-86 that has an ad for "The Speckless Sky" opposite an interview with Kate Bush for "Hounds of Love" :-D How cool is that!!!
Haven't heard this in 20 years. Brilliant. Thanks, q123q4321!

Often hailed as a Canadian Kate Bush, Jane Siberry had her own thing going.

Are people waking up to what Siberry did in the '80s?
And, your video rendition was nicely done, interesting mix of images, appropriately assembled. Good job.
Could you please do 'Symmetry?'

Yeah, I remember that video. That's how I first heard Jane Siberry. Then I went to the library and found out they had at least three albums by her.
This is probably the only song that uses the obnoxiously ubiquitious Fairlight orchestra stab sample that I can still stand listening to.
