Are you sure this was '84? Denny Carmassi was already in Heart by then as Gamma had been defunct since shortly after the release of Gamma 3. Just curious!
it's totally possible that the date is wrong. I had a note when I posted this, I'm pretty sure it was Gamma 2 tour. Sadly, I wasn't there. I was home recording it LOL
I was at this show too! What a rockin' good time. Saw some great bands at the Old Waldorf. Used to work at Malibu Grand Prix, and KSAN gave us free tix and a drink tab. Saw some great Soft White Underbelly (BOC) and Gamma, all kinds of great rock. Brings back some great memories!
some of those opening acts at the waldorf were good to. hari kari and some others i forgot the names. i saw yesterday and today there a half dozen times [Y&T]
I was at this show and hanging out with Bill Graham and DaveyPattison was
being friendly and taking pictures with fans along with Bill who was irritated
at having his photo taken. And as far as the Keyboardist here it was Alan Fitzgerald and the opening band was billed as Stereo who were formerly called Ranger and then eventually became Night Ranger and Alan Fitzgerald left Gamma and joined Night Ranger
@MrSmokeydog I was also at this show and my brother and I were trippin' on Fitz playing keys with the opening band, whose "name is not Stereo. . . It's Ranger". Ranger also opened up for Judas Priest in Oakland on the Point of Entry tour. The good old days. . .
I actually went to this concert. Seriously! I was with my best friends and the band was absolutely crazy good. I have been to many ,many concerts and this ranks as one of my all time favs. I know they didn't hit it world wide, I have no idea why, but REAL music lovers in the Bay Area remember these cats (GAMMA). Ronnie Montrose was rediculous that night! Just one of those nights I will never ever forget. I'm sure you know what i'm talking about.
Don't forget Jim Alcivar on keyboards. He played on the Gamma 2 record. May not have been on this recording. Great stage presence. Especially on Thunder and Lightening and Skin and Bone.
Saw Ronnie play a solo gig in SF early 80s. He had an computerized rig, sounded like a complete band - he was such a nerd, but a nerd who knew how to rock. I wish I had the wherewithal to record it, but getting high and enjoying the ride was more my style back then.
At Wolfgangs on Columbus Ave ca. 1983. It was him and Mitchell Froom. My buddy, who was a drummer, was convinced the synth drums would put him out of a job. Hah!
Yes, Wolfgangs! I forgot he had Froom with him. Thanks for filling in the gaps. "Watching" a digital drummer was pretty awesome. The whole thing was pretty cool.
I saw Gamma supporting the first album at Old Chicago amusement park in Bolingbrook, Il. Can't remember the date but the band ROCKED! Love the audio, but would DIE for some Video of this stuff...Thanks for the post!
weird on topic story, i'm a wedding photographer. in 1995 i was shooting a wedding and the CEREMONY and cocktail hour MUSIC was performed by none other than Davey Pattison. But it wasn't as you imaged. He looked wrought and disheveled. Playing an acoustic guitar through a small, beat up combo amp. Singing and playing covers he sounded quite good. But he looked terrible and it made me feel bad for him. I spoke with him at length that day and remember him telling me he was in between projects.
Incredible, man! I am not familliar with Gamma, Just found it by mistake, fantastic! Thanks for posting and keeping this era alive. What song is this?
I've been seeing Ronnie Montrose for over 30 years and I've seen Gamma many times as well. My most memorable Gamma concert was in support of their 1st album. They opened up for Blue Oyster Cult at The Cow Palace in San Francisco. The Cow Palace has always been kind of a dump but it legendary and bands love performing there.
I saw Gamma in Springfield, Ma. in 1980. They were opening for AC/DC. Gamma completely blew the doors off off the place. This recording backs me up on that too! A lot of the people there didn't realize Ronnie Montrose had a new band and they were flipping out. Montrose's guitar was too much of a match for poor Angus Young that night. Gamma literally blew AC/DC off the stage
Hey !..I saw Gamma the same night you did!..Oct.10, 1980 Springfield Civic Center!..I've been collecting GAMMA mem. since that night! ..the band was on FIRE!! ..Jim Alcivar, Ronnie Montrose,Dennis Carmassi,Glen Letsch,Davey Pattison! .."Thunder &Lightning" blew us away!! ..Ronnie played his red strat for that tune!!..I can still see them on stage!! ..Denny had the "eyeball' peeking through the torn paper(gamma2 album art) on his bass drum head!! ...GAMMA WAS LIKE A COMET,...came&went !
Too cool.....small world aye? Gamma was THE show as far as I was concerned that night. All I kept thinking was I could not believe how fine tuned these guys are, hitting every freakin note, beautiful timing and percussion, and the OUT fucking RAGEOUS guitar..... this level of live musicianship wasn't even being done by the biggest names in concerts that I had seen up to that point. Hey...we experienced the Gamma Comet.
Yes, it was Glenn Letsch on bass. He is a fantastic bass player. I saw Gamma once down at the Embarcadero Plaza. I had just got to school when a bunch of my friends said they were playing so we all ditched school to go check them out. It was awesome.
Dude - They played two shows that night. I was at both. At the late show, Montrose added 'Town without pity' to the set and played the first bars standing on our table (if you remember the setup at the Old Waldorf). I am so stoked to hear this! We also saw them same year at Day on the Green. And I was lucky to see their very first concert, opening for BOC New Years Eve 1980 at the Cow Palace. Great memories! Concert also had Froom on keys (but I liked Alcivar better) Thanks for posting!!
Hey Buddy. No, wasn't Ranger. I think that was the 2nd time they played Waldorf. I saw the first. It was a local band. All I remember is that they played a good version of 'Superstition'
Great post.
Is it not possible that this show can be found on some bootleg website?
Hoping for the full gig.
Davey Pattison is the man.

Growing up in the Bay Area I thought Gamma was our local secret. Great to know they're getting some love from the else-where's out there.
Seen Gamma 12+ times over the years & had the privilege to have worked with Ronnie. Great guy, great axeman!

You all need to do your homework on the band personnel: Gamma 1
Davey Pattison: Vocals
Ronnie Montrose: Guitar
Jim Alcivar: Keyboards
Alan Fitzgerald: Bass
Skip Gillette: Drums
Gamma 2:
Glenn Letsch, and Denny Carmassi came in on bass and drums.
Froom replaced Alcivar on Keyboards with Gamma 3

I have 8x10 pictures of the show. and i attended both shows. it was a band who
were ranger but calling themselves stereo
for that gig and they became Night Ranger the other night it was 415 with Eric Martin who formed his own band later and then
formed Mr Big and his drummer Troy Lucketta joined Tesla and is still in the
band to this day.
