Even though it's 2011, this video makes me want a Master System. At least the Ultimate Genesis Collection has a couple Master System games on it as extras, that'll have to do.
Sorry just wanted to say it. I remember getting mine from macy's too. They used to sell nintendo/sega stuff all the time about 20 years ago. I think the master system cost $175 at macys back then too. That's how much I remember mine being.
@ginojg That'd be a pretty cool idea! Maybe they should release them as compilations of 4 or 5 games in one package for about the same price as a PSOne Classic...
@Cuenca20 8-bit? am i wrong or you? i though sega was 16 bit, or are genesis and mastersystem different? i thought the different names are because of an us and one eruope version?!
Not the same thing, but the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis (Mega Drive) Collection has about fifty 16 bit games and around nine Master System games. It has classic Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone, and several others!
I like the Genesis more than the Master System, but this thing was still the Master. MAN WHAT A SYSTEM! NES CAN SUCK IT!
@CaptCamping The Sega Master System was technically superior to the NES. Unfortunately Nintendo locked up 3rd party licensing in America so the SMS didn't fair too well. Overseas the system did much better.
@johnnyjohnson Yet it still tanked compared to the NES. Its true Seaga did better overseas than it did in America, but Nintendo still beat it world wide.
@EmperorofCartoons Sega Master System outsold the NES in some countries. In a few countries, like the UK, neither system became the dominant gaming platform, due to the popularity of the Amiga, Atari ST, the aging Commodore 64 and the cheap 'n' cheerful ZX Spectrum (and to a less extent, the Amstrad CPC).
@CaptCamping yes, it had 64 colors vs. 52 for the NES, and the sound was much better. Games really were much better looking on the SMS vs. the NES (compare Phantasy Star to anything on the NES, for instance - it almost looks like a 16 bit game)
@sandwichsteen sounds was much better on the SMS??????? you are fucking insane if you think that the SMS sounds better than the NES. Graphics wise though, yes, the SMS had greater capabilities.
Overpriced - Same price as the NES: $200 at launch.
Prone to breaking - My Master System still works and it's between 21 and 25 years old, thank you. My NES has given me more problems, and it was cleaned prior to me getting it on March 30, 2006... my Master System was sold to me bone stock on March 29, 2006, one day before getting the NES.
Games - Phantasy Star? Alex Kidd in Miracle World? Golden Axe? All high quality, first rate games.
They meant that the SEGA light phaser was more advanced than the NES Zapper so it was better focused and the software had the ability to detect a miss and record it along with hits to actual targets.
Most of the SMS "Mega" carts were 128k or 256k, with a few reaching 512k. The cards were only 32k in size. Their sizes were always misleading. The computer industry used MegaBytes (1024k) while the video game companies used MegaBits (128k). That's why they just use the term "Mega" or "Meg". Measuring in MegaBits allowed them to use a number that was 8 times larger.

To be honest, this console was more advanced than the NES. It is a shame it got crushed by it.

Sega's troubles in the marketplace were mostly due to Nintendo's dubious business practices at the time.

I think you got it. it was not noticed by most people, but it was pretty cool to see the sparks of a missed shot.

@PoPoNellie and this was before Namco invented the Guncon (which used a pcb inside the gun to "read" the screen).
