You get a choice whever to allow unlimited characters or not during matches so although the carl user is more skilled by far, it was his fault for not using his unlimited character (no glow) and not canceling unlimited (where ragna is well overpowered lol)

I don't know if you were using Unlimited Carl or not so I won't hold that as the reason but I will mention that while he did wing the majority the use of Ragna's Distortion Soul Eater is the main reason behind that since it's able to recover so much, especially when unlimited, I think if it were regular Ragna the match would have been much more even.
