most women with an abnormal smear will not have cancer of the cervix. Many will not have pre-cancer either. The test picks up any abnormality. Often, when you are asked to come back for a repeat smear, it is because inflammation or infection has prevented the lab reading the smear properly. Or because there were not enough cells on the smear to give a reliable result.
