Thanks dude good video! I got question? I'm buying a iMac with 500Gb Hard drive and I'm gonna be editing video's and stuff should get 1TB hard drive???
hey mate, great "walkthough!" xD. I got snagged on "hardest part" that section was suitably labeled! Freaked me out popp off cable off lcd. The "large clip" part could've used a close-up and more explanation. Good "computer surgery" like upgrade video game. this is like surgery! Good times! good lab environment.
This is like proper computer surgery!! This is so awesome. I loved this project. Thanks. vid helped me out when was nervous "dissecting" hd, but read howto elsewhere.
Thanks for the video, I wouldn't have attempted this without it! However I think you are making life difficult for yourself. I didn't need to remove the LCD; just take the screws off and tilt it forwards, there are 2 small cables to detach (clips) and the either get someone to hold it tilted forwards or use a kitchen roll (as I did!) to prop it up. Plenty of space to change HD, I did in 40 mins start to finish.
2011 and apple can't provide a door flap to the hard drive - It must go like this Steve jobs says we need people to buy the next model up, we won't allow the consumer to access their hard drive ,they will void their warranty. Consumer wants a 1TB drive entry 21" 1149 (may 2011) has 500Gb - can you upgrade to 1TG for 40 bucks like dell. NO you need to spend 300 quid for the next model a 1TG drive and slightly faster graphics card. ( LOL people comment buy a Mac pro for extra disk space)
Btw, was told that a 2tb drive might overheat machine...would like to hear if anyone successfully installed a 2tb. Also, will the machine work with 64mb cache?
Thanks for the video, I'm also down to 30GB left from my 500GB internal drive, I need to upgrade my hard drive to 2TB on my iMac 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 21.5" is it the same case? Thank in advance with anyone that can help.
Thanks for the video. I have the flashing folder icon like many others. This means the drive is stuffed and I need to replace it. Many comments suggest taking it to an Apple store to get it fixed.
For those of us who live outside of the US and don't have a local Apple Store, this type of video is vital. Thanks again.
Thanks for that, not yoo scary. My iMac is hanging and showing White screen with flashing file. What is the advice? Cannot afford to let apple fix it.
@KleenezeDon if your iMac is showing an unhappy Mac Face it probably means the OS X Files are screwed up. Reinstall OS X from OS X install DVD should fix that.
Hey thank you very much for this! I just used this last night to upgrade my 320gb hard drive in my 24" iMac...worked like a charm and was a lot easier than i thought it would be. Now i have 2TB in my iMac...awesome!
If your thinking about upgrading your hard drive, don't worry it's cake...just take your time and don't be rough with any of your wires!
I agree with most people....I love my iMac but the damn drive is soooo small! I purchased a 2tb drive and I'm going to attempt this....kind of afraid, but oh well I need a larger drive!
This should be as easy as the new macbooks.....unscrew and done!
it's funny how iMacs are really user friendly, but this is waaaaay too much work for risking it on my pocketbook (not to mention it would void the warranty). it would be nice if they made it where the end-user could change the hard drive as easily as upgrading the RAM, but apple would rather you spend money to take it to a store and have it upgraded. still love my iMac though!
This is sooooooo stupid of Apple to put hard drive soooooo deeeep inside. Everyone knows that the first thing that breaks in computer is Hard Drive. My just gone after 14 months. Lucky I found this video, but so stupid of Apple.
You are a beast. I wanted to change my 320 gig hard drive to a 1 tb. I learned how to clone my old hard drive on the new one. So than i came to the phase where i had to change my hard drive. I checked out this movie and i am like WTF. This is way to hard for me, don't want to do my baby any harm.
Here is an idea. Just bring it down to the Apple Store (make an appointment for the Genius Bar) and have the Apple Geniuses replace it, if you are afraid that you would mess up the iMac.
Use osx dvd start up put the dvd in your mac and hold c, dvd will boot mac osx install. Go to Disk utility select hard drive, format it to HFS+ and close Disk Utility now your hard drive will show up at the install of OSX
Any 3.5in SATA (It looks like SATA, I doubt they would use PATA/IDE, and I'm not sure they make TB PATA/IDE drives) will work. I recommend Western Digital, since they make really good drives.
Great video. My drive crashed yesterday and your video was critical in helping me sort things out. I'm typing this using my brand new 700 gig drive! Thanks dude. :-}
i had a 2nd optical drive failure not even going to bother with getting it fixed, my warranty is out and its not worth all the trouble and cost to replace it.
Thanks Frank. Was your new internal HD SATA or not? Great video. What program did you use to edit it and slide the cool text that meets up (like Step 1 / Remove Ram Cover)?
Hey man. Just wanted to say that I respect your editing style. It was funny that while I was learning how to switch my hard drive, I was also nodding my head to the beat. Lol.
Wow! Thanks for posting this. I really want to change out my 320gb hdd but, now that you've shown me what it takes. I think I will take it in and pay the $40. There is too much room for error. Cool posting though.
Well, technically no, but if you break something in there it's all on you to pay for the new piece. Unless you're comfortable with paying for new parts, should something like this lead to their failure, I would recommend having an Apple Hardware Certified tech do the work.
Hey Man....Nice video!! I've been looking to upgrade my hard drive on my iMac as well but I don't know if I got the guts to do so. probably best to lay the iMac down on its back so when you remove parts you don't put too much strain on the little cables you have to detach.

Great vid, but some drives may produce more heat, so doesnt that potentially damage your imac? For instance a 10000 rpm drive?

That's why 10,000 RPM Drives have Huge Heat Sinks. To compensate for their heat.
