I used to be a fan of T.V. when there were good shows on. U.K. takes from U.S. and U.S. takes from everybody. Benny Hill was classic comedy no matter what era. He was mix of Looney Tunes and Buster Keaton/Chaplin. Three's Company brought U.S. back in the mix. Hill Street Blues was revolutionary. Prime Suspect came back strong. Cracker was the hottest thing. Monk put A.D.D. internationally known. House has fused U.K. and U.S. as Laurie is British. Pan Am has now put U.K. in the lead.
when i read that the new series was based/inspired on a BRITISH series and helen mirren in the lead role i thought how would they have managed that helen mirren is old compared to the much younger maria bello, well it's an old series, and helen is young inthis one.
This was an excellent series, and Helen Mirren was just great in it. I agree that many British dramas are far better than the American counterparts, many American actors and actresses are too concerned with their looks and not the acting. Thanks, this is one of my favs.
@505Wizard Pan Am is garbage. I would watch any U.K. drama instead. Pan Am is all looks and no substance. A 19 year old Pilot cruising the flight attendants every episode. C'mon guys. I would ask for my money back if I was a passenger. No way I trust a pilot with my life who is younger than my first Playstation.
The only American show that I have watched of the same high standard in more recent times is the excellent Third Watch and that was brilliant...You can keep your CSI franchises and Law and Order they are not to my taste.
We do have some of the best TV drama in the UK, and shows like Cracker, Prime Suspect and many others portray crime and real life realistically...Having said that, now that I have seen repeats of Hill Street Blues, Cagney and Lacey and St. Elsewhere et al, their was obviously a time when American television made some brilliant ground-breaking and hard hitting drama at one time. So sad that these type of shows were made before I was born or too young to watch the original runs.
I do prefer British actors like Robbie Coltrane in Cracker. Fantastic actors. Not that we do not have good ones here in Germany as well. But I would in most cases prefer any UK thing against American ones.
I would agree with lamawake but only to a certain extent there are plenty of crappy English TV series like the one about footballer's wives which is appallingly poor other pathetic soap but Prime Suspect does indeed show up almost all American cop series as fake; all limos and bimbos. In America series are very 'formiulaic' siliconed blondes, car chases, shitty dialogue and fake looking actors and technological gadgets.
American TV can not hold a candle to any British series.it's why they copy them all the time, and still can't do half the job. Hollywood is a joke....with low rate airbrushed actors, stupid story lines...there is no comparison, they are not in the same league..
@Iamawake100 That's not really a fair statement. Yes, our network television has gone to shit, but there's still cable television. As long as he have our HBOs, AMCs, and Sci-fi Channels around (their Battlestar re-imagining was just fucking great) our television'll be just fine. Besides, Britain didn't give us Dynasty... just the bitch who played in it :] (Have a sense of humor. I'm really not trying to incite an argument)
I saw this on the telly in 1991 - have not seen it since but have always quoted it as being the best whodunnit. Brilliant suspense - totally original plot.
I am going to watch it again now - thanks so much for posting!
I dont think you can compare UK to US in crime series, its just two different worlds both offering good shows. CSI is so exact they have a real crime lab costing millions in the show. You cant put that down. and autopsy . are just wonders of tv. You cant push down US TV shows, ok there is crap but there is very good too....
British TV crime dramas have American TV shows beat hands down. More drama - better acting - less airbrushed actors - normal looking people. Fantastic series!!!
I wish that were still true but you have to hand it to the US - the 2000s have been a golden era for American television, whilst the quality of ours has steadily declined, with classics like Prime Suspect and Cracker now gone (just noticed someone else mentioned Cracker, which really was mesmerising). If you're talking about crime specifically, I don't think The Wire has any competition.
A "golden era" perhaps for CABLE American television. American broadcast television has become increasingly idiotic, still in the grip of "reality" shows.
@down160 Totally agree. What do we have left on American TV, CSI (watched a two hour of one of the programs) which was utterly unbelievable and reality shows. The thing that bothers me most about American television/movies is everyone is pretty and fake. There's not naturalness to them.
@down160 agree, although the brits always seem a LOT more uptight. maybe that's just how they are. i spent a year in england and that's the way they all seemed to me. :)
@down160 Actually, there's a reason for that. There are much less jobs for British actors in the UK, so there's no stigma against, say, winning an Oscar for a drama and then doing some 7-part serial on ITV like there is in the US. You are either working, or not working. As a result, you end up with less actors with more experience.
totally agree this knocks the likes of csi for six. if you compare what is the same episode of fitz and cracker theres no comparison.also here seems to be something wrong with the lighting in some of the american series
A lot of credits to Lynda La Plante who wrote for this BILLIANT suspense..All the characters were exquisite, but it was kinda sad that the final cut has only tom bell's character on it, but it would be too much if it would all of DCI Tennisons team will be there... Brilliant and english intellect all the way...
Wow, thanks for posting this...will watch them all. This is one of the best roles ever written for a woman on TV...and their choice of actress couldn't have been more spot on
Thanks for appreciating this as the art it was intended to be, and not setting to your very own favorite song. It's a gem as it is, no one can improve upon it!
omg, i saw this when i was sooooo young, thank you
