Fake. Unless he had an existing problem inside the airbag control unit in his Benz, the unit needs to see 2 things. A crash signal (from the old lady) and a sudden change in velocity provided by the inertia switch inside the control unit. This is impossible to do with the car standing still. But funny as hell otherwise!

actually, that's not true. airbags, when designed properly, work whenever the vehicle is in gear, or when the engine is running.

say you're at a stop sign. some guy runs it going 50 mph, swerved to avoid a car, and hits you head on. you just had a head on collision where you are both going 25 mph. manufacturers will usually take that into consideration, and design them to operate at any speed, if any speed.

The inertia of that movement will cause the inertia switch to activate, combined with a crash signal from the sensors in the front and you have airbag deployment. you cannot just have a single crash signal and deploy an airbag as is the case in this video.

But airbags go off pretty aggressively when they do go off. They also give off a powder-like chemical cloud, too. You can see other videos of real airbag deployment on YouTube including one where a fireman who is barely even in the car gets injured when the bag goes off by him.

However, this is definitely a real airbag, set off by a remote switch. Air bags do emit a cloud of chemical, but not enough to harm you and definitely no more than what's seen in this video. Also, airbags are designed to serve as a barrier between you and the steering wheel, when you're moving forward due to inertia. This guy's not moving forward, so he's in no real danger of being hurt from the airbag. it barely tapped him.
