What divides them is a doctrinal issue of importance. Gregory Palamas, a theologian in the 1300's, argued that when we look at Christ on Mount Tabor, there is a Light or Energy. That we can never be part of God's True Essence, but we can become part of this Light. It contradicts orthodox theology, as that when one eats Christ's Body, and drinks His Blood the Universal Church has always taught we become part of Christ's True and Real Essence, not just some Cosmic spiritual Oneness in Him
is a beautiful video, I like it so much, specially the music, i like that kind of music, what's the name of that song?, I want to find some, i really like them, what's the name of the song and the album? God bless everyone
But Greek Cristianity is almost like Roman Catholic if I am not wrong. Correct me if I am wrong but if you analyze the Roman Catholic Tradition, compare it to that CHurch, it looks almost the same.
@meusisto : From my point of view, two things: a political problem (Greek do not recognize the roman Pope as a superior, but as an equal), and theological problem (for Roman Catholics, the Son comes from the Father, and the Holy Spirit comes from the Father and the Son, whereas for the Greeks, the Holy Spirit and the Son comes from the Father).
Can someone refresh my memory? In the traditional Latin Mass we sing this one Mass part in Greek. Why? (I used to know ... I guess I'm having yet another 'senior's moment'.)
Because the early language of the Mass before Latin was Greek. It was out of respect for the language, and tradition that it was kept. It was the intent during the changes in the mid 1960's to do the same. It is making a return now.
Before the Ctholics split, there was one church, all in Greek the common language of that time. There are "some " words that cannot be truly translated, and that is why I believe that both the Anglicans and Catholics still use certain words in Greek.
Catholics give Christianity a bad reputation. They are a disgrace to the religion and we Orthodox Christians will never accept the vatican's apology for bringing the dichotomy of the church and for the crusades. Get it right.
St Maximus the Confessor wrote (PG xci, 144) that the Roman See "from God the Incarnate Word Himself as well as all the holy Councils, according to the sacred canons and definitions, has received and possesses supreme power in all things and for all things, over all the holy churches of God throughout the world, as well as power and authority of binding and loosing. For with this church, the Word, who commands the powers of heaven, binds and looses in heaven."
availability1, I don't seriously think you are a christian, Christians forgive, whatever you tight on earth will be tight in heaven, watch out for what you say about not forgiving Catholics. If you are an orthodox christian you bring shame to the orthodox church.
Just to clarify, it was long before the Schism of 1054 that the Mass was changed into Latin. Around 400 the Mass began widespread use in Latin but the Eastern Church was allowed to keep its Rites. Heck, at one point there were 32 Rites in Europe alone. The Kyrie remains in Greek to recognize important roots of the Church in Greece and also with the Greek language, which many of the New Testament books were written and geared towards Greek speakers. Use of these languages was for unifying
Hi! "Kyrios" is "Master" (the owner of a house, of slaves, the lord of a property). And you are right about "Eleison": it means "Have mercy". Not sure about "litania" (it sounds more like modern greek).
I sing this song in my choir, it sounds alot different-i think this one is just as pretty as the one in my choir...Kyrie eleison is saying god have mercy on us.
I love going between the very traditional to the more contemporary. I just heard "Lord have Mercy" with Michael W. Smith, then I heard this (spanning several hundred years)- Both versions are awesome. Thanks for posting this and may God Bless you!
Here I'm just a poor cockroach absolutely delighted with this vid work. I know, you selected images for it, mostly from state-of-the-art Gibson artwork. But, bro, that music... THAT MUSIC! Perhaps you have a special passport to heaven to record things?
God bless you, may the Mighty Lord bless you and all of your life.
We sang this in choir in high school, but I can't find the exact version that we did... It's driving me crazy...

Please, I'm ignorant on this and would like to know more.
What does make them divided and what should be overcome in order to be only one?
Sincere thanks

Actually, before the Orthodox split, Latin had been the language of the liturgy in the West since the 4th century AD.

That is almost true. "Kýrie Eléison" means "God have mercy". If you want to say "God have mercy on us" you'd say "Kýrie litania"

Kyrios means Lord.
litania is not modern Greek it's old greek and it means the ritual of confession and the prayer for forgivness.
