Those rides don't accelerate downward. It is a free fall. If anything, there would be resistance due to friction. Either way, two objects in free fall will fall at the same rate unless one is affected by wind resistance. The phone fell from the height you saw in the video. The fact that it landed on its back gave the force of impact greater surface area to spread over. It was probably luck.

@legendarygatz no one gives a fuck about your 12th grade physics knowledge. he didn't drop it from 140 feet. the principle of wind resistance would explain that. the phone stays facing the same direction all the way down. wind would have made the uneven surface topple. he dropped while the ride was braking about 15 feet above the ground on a surface, (aluminum) that was softer than the phone (stainless steel) and the shock distributed itself across the metal band. hence no cracks in the glass.

Facedown, the phone can't stand a 4 foot drop but on its side I've seen and have dropped my own phone from 10+ feet without a scratch as well I've thrown mine against a wall and on the ground and it survived without any damage.
