My dad loved this song...I'm 40 this year....but at the time I used to take the pi** out of his music tastes....funny how you appreciate it years later...and it's all about love for his woman...gotta love that people xxx
New Years Eve and this was high in the charts. I had a mobile Disco and was playing at The Castle Hotel Conwy in North Wales, a gig I had done for some years.
One of the guests asked me to play this record for Daves Mum who was also a guest that evening, the man being Daves record producer.
Of course I would play it and pleased to do so said I.
It was not in the sleeve, then I remembered my wife had been playing it at home! It was still on our record player.
My father died 18 yrs ago aged 94. He remembers a Lieutenant in the Trenches in Belgium singing this to his troops on the night before they went 'over the top'.
My father saw him shot through the head next morning, as they all advanced into No Mans Land---My father always remembered the Lieutenant every time he heard this song, for the rest of his life.
It seems we all have similar lovely memories from the same time. When this was released in 1980, I can remember my dear late father telling me that this self same song which I had bought as a 45rpm was one of HIS mother's favourites. She was born in 1894. How's that for an enduring song. God Bless Dad, and also my nana, and RIP.
The sheet music to this was the first gift my father gave to my mother. She has played it for years as a family favourite. She is 88 and going strong but sadly Dad died 3 years ago. I hope he is listening.
my nana used to sing this to my mother as the german bombers were over head[going after the munitions factory 1 mile away] while my mother and uncle jim were trying to sleep on a shelf under the stairs and nana bless her sat on chair in the doorway trying to distract them
We were mates in the 50s & early 60s i went to see him perform in lowerstoft last year and spoke with him but iwas sad that he did not remember me. hedid still remember our friend Brian Ellis though.
Mike Berry does a very commendable version of this song but I can't help thinking his voice has been "enriched" by a little studio trickery. I hope I'm wrong because I don't like this song any less for it.
My Dad passed away on Tues, and this is the song he sung to my Mum when they first met 45yrs ago, it was great when Mike released this song some 25 years later.,will be played at the commital as his funeral next Tues. RIP Dad
My Baby Sister is all i shall see when my life is done ,, Joanne I m so sorry i forgot you but it's always hard .. Make room for your brother up there Please. I loved you so mjuch
Dear David, How sad I felt to read your note. There will be a resurrection and you will see Joanne here on earth soon. I am not a religious nut. Please read Psalms 37, v11 and 29 especially 29. Revelation 21 v1-4 especially 4
I am no longer a young man. Thank you so much for posting this. I thought he made a great version of an old classic I will forever, until I die, devote and dedicate to my Mother. Thanks again.
this singer takes the sugar off other's interpretation of a beautiful song and makes it truly wonderful. For that, just a huge LIKE! :)

From an original song Published c.1913 recorded in 1915 by Jessie Broughton and in 1928 by
Lilian Davies and was a hit in U.K for Mike Berry 1981 from a
suggestion of Chas'Hodges (aka Chas and Dave). so I believe knavyman is CORRECT!!!

@knavyman correct, see my earlier post, my old dad remembered it too, it was probably the 1915 version of a top 10 hit.
