  • This is one of Dylan's most engmatic tunes and after pondering it's wording for years, I've come to wonder if he might not be slyly writing on the state of the USA after the JFK Assassination.

He talks about the "Blind Commissioner" being led on a tightrope, which certainly might be Earl Warren, mentions 'Ophelia' on her 22nd birthday beneath the window, which puts one in mind of Oswald on NOV 22nd in that spot. The 'agents' are 'rounding up' people who 'know' into 'heart attack machines'.

  • This is the best recorded version of this song that I have had the pleasure to hear. It's got Dylan's feel and general rebeliousness intact, but has it's own unique appeal, and is easier to understand than Dylan's voice- it's more comprehensible.

    Just excellent.

  • "As a fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold, so is a man to his praise." Proverbs 27:21

Thanks duk...and you have quite a gift for words yourself. The elements you cite are all things that I was shooting for when I recorded this song, and your reaction to it is just what I hope for every time I perform. Stay tuned, I really DO intend to record "Hard Rains" soon, and it is one of those "out of the park" Dylan songs...and today's headline to boot.

  • Transcendental performance of one of the greatest songs of all time. Thank you Randy. No more problems after desolation row.

  • thanks sundance...your check is in the mail...lol....hey, i had an idea....it would be cool if people would start saying what their favorite line from the song is...anyway, i need to figure out what I did right in recording this song, and then bottle it...because if i could figure out how to get such favorable responses with everything I sing, I could actually make some money doing it...anyway, it really makes me feel good to know that you and others like the performance...

  • my favourite dylan song and you've given it a whole new dimension, i love your cover and could listen to it all night... brilliant job mate!!

  • thanks so much, dix...i have to say that it's really blowing my mind how many kind and favorable responses I have been getting to this particular performance...what did shakespeare say?..."The Play's The Thing."?...no way I'm getting these kinds of responses to my version of "Louie Louie"...Desolation Row is one phenomenal song... and, by the way, so is "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall"...which is more topical now than when Dylan first wrote it... I hope to have my own version up soon...

  • Great version. Thanks very much.

  • gotta tell you, NCM, and everybody else, how gratifying it is to hear that the song-performance is working...when all is said and done I think that at heart what I am is an entertainer...and nothing makes me feel better than knowing that somebody has been entertained by my performance...truly...so thanks one and all for the applause.... :-)

  • As a rule I hate covers, but you got it my friend.

    From Desolation Row

  • thanks, tbomb... :-)

  • thanks elanora...funny how we can both sit at the same table....a table that covers the distance between Thailand and L.A....and share a song....the internet...the global coffee house...hope you check out some of my other Dylan covers on the same channel, and click on my "randybrook77" link below to see some other song performances and interesting videos of Venice Beach...cheers!

  • awesome!!!!!!!!

    i love love love that!!!!!

  • great to hear that, smitestyle...thanx... :-)

  • I love it ! And about people not sharing or catching it: well maybe it needs to be like this on desolation row.

  • pass me the soapbox...I believe Dylan is a prophet....that means that sometimes God "breathes" ideas into his mind for him to write and sing...sometimes not...(i know not all my "fans" believe in God...that's OK with me...but I do)...sometimes it is prophetic images, like "Hard Rains" (I am going to post my version soon), sometimes it is implied social commentary, like Desolation Row. In the Bible nobody listened to the prophets...so what else is new?

  • By the way, thanks - sundance - for your comment. I am so glad people like some of my Dylan covers.

  • @RandyBrook100 man, you´re great, a real trip. the intensity you´re singing these b.d. songs tells me you must have listened and loved him all down the line.. so do i but i cant either sing nor play any instrument. never the less i keep roaring along with b.d.´s songs when i´ve reached a certain stage. no pun meant..

keep going & thanks for posting..

  • thanks, skinupfast...you're right about that...when i first heard Dylan (his first album) in 1962 I didn't like him...then one day "House Of The Rising Sun" broke through to me and I have been a die-hard fan ever since...saw him later that year at Monterey Folk Festival...he sang "Hard Rains" for first time to West Coast audience...just blew EVERYBODY away...one song...blinked a couple of times and walked offstage...wow....PS-goof with a harmonica...what do you have to lose?

  • @RandyBrook100 thanks for your reply. when i first heard "hard rain" then it blew my mind, the whole album did and made me get his first of which i spontaneously loved every song then came all the other ones. yes, i did play a little harp, but gave it up in the course of time, even sounded like b.d. when singing, tried to at least but these days are gone and i think i better leave this busineness to people like you who know what they´re doing. thanks for the encouregment. all the best my friend

  • Amazing, Randy - Great talent and takes me back to The Bitter End and so many others so long ago... I will visit your channel.....

  • great performance. in spite of the plastic hippies who tried to ruin it and give you a hard time as usual, like that jerk who stands right behind you and pulls out his cell phone. But the cam picked you up just fine and, in they end they only helped2illustrate what the song's talking about.

  • well, paul, i'm glad you said that instead of me...it's the best coffee house around, by far, so we make the best out of it...at least they allow me to sit and record at an outside table...yes, plastic hippies and people threatened by creativity - despite the "mission" to be a bastion for counter-culture, thought and creativity...so, we'll take what we can get... :-) ...nice video work on your channel... I recommend that people have a look....

  • You're awesome, man!

  • no, YOU'RE awsome...:-) Thanks Angie...the singer is only as good as the song...hard to go wrong with Dylan... check out my other music etc. channel "Venice Beach Etc. (RandyBrook77) by clicking on my little blue link below...some other good songs (be sure to watch "Shelter From The Storm") and interesting videos of venice beach...peace out....

  • well done mate!!!

  • Thanks ! Check out my randybrook100 ("Coffee-House Songs") channel...got some other good Dylan covers. Peace on you...(get it?) :-)
