When the Romans were in Briton the English didn't exist, the Britons were Welsh, the Romans named Scotland Caledonia, in Gaelic it's called Alba (pronounced Alapa) The English were Saxons from Saxony which is a region in Germany. In other words the English are Jonnie come lately's, a mixutre of Germanic & Norman French after 1066. Even their capital is Welsh, Londonia, ancient Welsh. The English as a nation are non desciptive & cannot eatablish an identity. Which is why they are so fucked up!

(Normans actually were Germanic, but eventually they got as French as any Frenchmen). English evolved from a dialect in which the Norman settlers could communicate with the Anglo-Saxons.

The Saxons were culturally dominant but were a minority in Briton. They did not kill off the original people, they mated with the original people and it shows in the "English" DNA today - which is predominantly Native Celtic with some Germanic elements present [Saxons].
