Direct overhead lighting creates shadows in every nook and cranny, and makes your cheeks appear lower and your face shape odd. Also, white light is terrible for showing flaws. It's why on photo shoots they have lights form every angle, so there are no shadows at all (which is fake, but you'll look flawless). Some lighting/half dark conceals flaws and actually makes most people look better. (ie. at a bar)
