When I was a post-doc in the Physics Department at Syracuse in 1973-75, David was kind enough to let me fool around in the studio as much as I wanted. I learned a tremendous amount from him, and it's wonderful to see him in this video, looking just a bit older, but otherwise very much the same.
What beautiful work! David was my ceramics teacher at SU from 1973-1977. At that time the work he was doing was mostly centered around the platter and I haven't seen any of his work since then. I loved watching the creation of the work for this video; texturing and shaping still on the wheel. Beautiful!
dmwilson, I'm pretty sure that the original cylinder is so well thrown and even, and planned, that no outside support is needed, just an extra push to expand the form into the intended shape.
ONe great old saying in the pottery trade is "The first thousand of each shape are the hardest" .. Great to hear the sentence about the first ton through his hands.. Great clip . All the best Guy
Thank you for your comments. I'm David's website administrator. David probably will not be posting replies to comments, but I'll pass along your remarks to David.
@dmwilson121 I'm sorry, but I can't answer questions about David's throwing technique, but maybe another YouTube-r can.
Fantastic and yes you do make it look easy. My question is that I notice you use one hand only to expand the vessel from inside, so how do you get away with that technique? How do you avoid the wobble? Really great. Thanks
