I don't even know where to begin. Using childish teasing and taunts, you gloss over so many problems her video is addressing. We have a fundamental duty to make sure that the least of us is taken care of in this society. Capitalism does not lift people out of poverty, but sustains & creates poverty for billions across the globe. It is a system that lacks morality, empathy, or sympathy. It is heartless and in a so called Christian nation, it goes against everything Jesus ever stood for.
While I feel that there are certainly some points that are wrong with "The Story of Waste", I feel that you react using the same fallacies as she does. For instance you cite several times that her statistics are wrong. But look at your sources: You say the US is the wealthiest nation. This might be true on a nominal basis, but it is not true per capita, which after all determines how much stuff one can buy and which is the point in your argument that Europeans buy less then Americans.
I feel very sorry for the maker of these videos. It is clear that he does not know what Sustainable living is in a finite planet. I doubt he went to college.
I had a hard time believing most of this critique, but when you started pushing the old Soviet Communist stuff, it just goes to show that you are 100% pro-capitalism. Look at America now, is capitalism still working for 99% of your population or just the 1% of millionaires and billionaires? Capitalism is also on it's way out and so are people like you. The original vid may have some flaws, but capitalism is not the answer either.
I have a question, when she said that the system needs to be changed you relate it to the Soviet Union, I am curious, she didn't mention anything about Communism, Russia, Socialism or words like that in the video how did you come to the conclusion that she is trying to promote communism? and by the way guys there's nothing wrong in protecting our environment.
Regardless of your belief on this I do feel like this should not be shown to a 9 year old. I feel like this is better suited for High school students, maybe Juniors and seniors, but definitely not a 9 year old because in the actual video it feels more like she's pushing her believe on the viewer and children are naive in this sense
I like how this guy almost always(being cautios((I spelled it wrong didn't I))in case I have to prove something) backs up his thoughts and opinions with FACTS. Also the story of stuff was showed to me in geography class and decided to look up this critique, and I found out that, well, let's just say I found this video. My geography teach wasn't only impressed with this, but he also showed all four videos and Never played one of the "The Story of Stuff" videos again. Thanks!
Firstly 00:36 Happiness is a personal responsibly.
Even if you meant happiness is a personal "responsibility", what makes that true? The fact that you tried to say so? If someone steals all your clothes and you get unhappy about it, is that because you failed to take personal responsibility for your own happiness? No. You are unhappy because someone stole your clothes.
2nd: Is it more that you you don't care about the environment or more that you are an extremist anti russian reactionary?
@cuttlefishgem Straw man attack. People actually have the ability to makes themselves happy. That indeed makes it a personal responsibility. Just because there can be some external influences doesn't change that.
Straw man attack 2. He never said he doesn't care about the environment. He critique on her was that her ideas for a better world are a complete failure.
@TWSceptic 1. People's ability to make themselves happy is often transformed into a convenient absolution for those who show no regard for the wellbeing of others, which is precisely the sense one gets from this guy. 2. He made it quite clear that he has no regard for the anxieties of those of us who are concerned about e.g. deforestation. He made it clear that he has no concern about deforestation. He does not care about the environment. 3. Who said anything about communism?
@cuttlefishgem 1. I do not get that sense at all. I get a libertarians sense, which is just one ideology against another. I think it's the right one. 2. Where? THis isn't an opinion on that, but I understand he does not believe the government actually helps against deforestation. I tend to agree. Where did he say he doesn't care about the environment? That's what you seem to think. 3. You, when you mentioned the Soviet anthem.
@TWSceptic I think people like the guy doing this critique use russian history and american cold war anti-communist hysteria as not only a straw man but as a bogey man to appeal to the sense of fear in the U.S. indoctrinated and to lash out at anything that points out the failings of contemporary hypercapitalism.
@cuttlefishgem There is no such thing as 'hypercapitalism'. That's what's the straw man. You either have capitalism, or you have a mix of socialism and capitalism, which is not real capitalism and like communism tends to ... not work.
@TWSceptic So, you either have capitalism or you have capitalism CONTAMINATED by little evil communist elements which wreck the purity and beauty of it. Yeah right. That's exactly the same style of thinking used by the religious fundamentalists on all sides who feel the purity and beauty of THEIR system must be maintained by destroying the impure influences. It's binary thinking ...paranoid thinking in fact.
@cuttlefishgem The problems are a) as has been pointed out to you, there is no such thing as "hypercapitalism" and b) you have yet to describe the "failings of capitalism". I am curious to see whether you include world poverty, living standards, the Great Depression, the current economic crisis, the BP oil spill, unemployment or income inequality which are either not due to capitalism at all, are not a problem at all or have actually improved as a direct result of capitalism.
@FletchforFreedom a) There is no such thing as hyper capitalism? Because you say so?
b) Failings of capitalism: the poisoning of hundreds of people including children at places like Agbogbloshi in Nigeria in order to maximise profits in Europe and the States. Shrinking middle class and increasing poverty of the masses coupled with ever growing obscene wealth in an ever shrinking minority of elites in the U.S. and Europe.
Your list is not directly related to hypercapitalism? Because you say so?
@cuttlefishgem a) the term is meaningless, b) Ghana's infringement on the private property rights of its citizens in order to maximize its own revenue (and now seek aid to address the problem) is not a failure of capitalism, nor is a government caused economic crisis (now or in 1929) nor are the "masses" (excepting recessionary periods) becomeing increasingly impoverished - exactly the opposite is the case. Capitalism has HALVED world poverty rates in the last four decades.
@cuttlefishgem My list: 1&2) world poverty has declined and living standards have improved as a direct result of capitalism; 3&4) the Great Depression and current crisis resulted from socialistic government meddling with the money supply; 5) the BP oil spill was due to regulations that pushed the rig out to see and liability caps given by government; 6) unemployement - see 3&4; and 7) of what difference income equality in a system that has created the wealthiest "poor" in the world?
@cuttlefishgem the definition of capitalism is the private exercise of the powers of ownership over the means of production - in short, the free market. Hyper means over, above or excessive. How does something become more, particularly excessively more free than 100% free? Capitalism is the absence of economic restraint. How can something be more unrestrained than completely unrestrained? That you choose to prefer more of a socialist hybrid does not give the term any credibility.
I enjoyed these video and I think he's broadly correct on most things. However I would say that: a) while prices will encouraging rationing it can only go so far until prices rise too high that no one can afford anything as we do ultimately live with finite resources b) advertising is actually more about feeding consumer imperfect information to make products appear better and c) regardless of your views on climate change, moving away from fossil fuels to renewable is essential
ok, i don't agree to show the video to kids in schools because it's not their problem but if this is what you've learned from the original "Story of stuff" video I'm sorry for you...
0:50 Fuck penguins, fuck polar bears, fuck fish, fuck crabs, all I care about is my brand new SUV. I'm not going to educate my self about my SUV's impact on the environment cuz that'll probably make me sad.
I don't agree with many of Leee Doren's libertarian points of view, but I have to admit this video brilliantly debunked this environmental lunacy. Thanks!
I have a question, when she said that the system needs to be changed you relate it to the Soviet Union, I am curious, she didn't mention anything about Communism, Russia, Socialism or words like that in the vedio how did you come to the conclusion that she is trying to promote communism??
@Dennojist American conservatives can't let go of Soviet Communism. They can't admit it's gone. They need it. Something to oppose with their zealous bias; something that makes them all American freedom fighters. The British, then the Germans, then the Marxists, then Islam.
I'm honestly suprised how little passion they have about the rise of China.
@Dennojist Anyways, don't misunderstand this video series as anything constructive or objective. It has its virtues, but in all it only seeks to replace liberal bias with conservative bias. The American left and right are at war. And in war, the first casualty is the truth.
and ya when i get freaked out about what we are doing, you thankfully reassure me. And, right now, i am doing an assignment and going to do a test about this soon,...........
Wow, i have an economics degree, im shocked by the dellusional garbage this childrens video teaches. Its absolutley 100% dangerous garbage that will indid lead any society into harsh poverty.
Dont produce, dont shop, dont take any questionable risks, dont work..
@shining3210 I have an economics degree too and I agree with you that this is destructive for the economy, but unlike you I think that there are things that are more important than the economy. like the people and..... maybe the planet we all live on?
@silviu0o Economy is everything and everything is economy. The economy goes down, so will the quality and length of life. Less food, less medicine less everything.
Technology can save the earth, and its proving itself. The better the economy, so will the technology get better. As for trees, i heard they tend to regrow.
@shining3210 economy is everything? I thought that people have created the economy , not the economy us. And I still think that friends and other stuff in life that you get for free increases the quality of life, not electronic devices people buy and throw away after 6 months.... have you seen the original"the story of stuff" video?
@silviu0o Yea economy is the food you eat, the clothes you wear, your well being and health and so on.. The better the economy, the better and longer societies live their lives, and the better civilization advances toward the future.
And if you dont want to "throw" away stuff, dont buy anything, cause nothing will last forever.. Or just build or buy more durable "stuff"..
This "story of stuff" video is a destructive demagogic false brainwashing and indoctrination, im sepnt years learning econ..
@shining3210 you have an economics degree and you tell me that economy is food and clothes? I suggest you take the Micro- and Macroeconomic books from the first year and read the definitions again :)
just watch the original "story of stuff" video...
@silviu0o Yea the economy as we reffer to it, is every product / service that you posess or get. The more accurate term comes from shortage, meaning, nothing you want/need is infinite.
@silviu0o For those that think that there are more important things than the economy like people, community, and "sharing is caring" inevitably leads to a situation where the opposite of what is intended results. I guess there is always a tendency for people to have socialist values, being social creatures, but socialist values to guide a society leads to unfettered corruption and is the road to serfdom. People learned that the hard way.
@GunsNRosesbitches@shining3210 I don't say economy is not important, but it's not everything like most people say nowadays. It seems like the economy is outdated... Our world has developed, the economy not, or at least not in a good way, don't you think?
@shining3210 I really wish you had checked your spell check. Your comment is spot on ... but please, check that spell check, especially for something this spot on.
@toksikado Actually... that statement was his joke towards her appeals to correlations. It was sarcasm, rewatch the video Im sure you will realise then.
when you say the states was a third world country i believe you meant to say a developing country. a third world country is a country that didn't pick a side in the cold war (usually an imperial power).
of course we should be ashamed! not feeling like this knowing that we are not only harming ourselves but also nature it would mean we are ignorant or indifferent ... and unlike you there are people who wants to do something about it and not let the planet keep getting wasted
Augh, the "true recycling / downcycling" distinction! Awful! Recycled bottles have to get processed to be turned into new bottles; they don't just clean them out and refill them! Those raw materials aren't doing any more good to the environment by *having* to become bottles than if they were to be used for carpets, tires, sports equipment, etc.
this guy is completely right and she has some good points to but the truth is that "perfect" system will never work. and we buy new computers because old ones cant efficiently store or compress data efficiently anymore so we need faster and more reliable products.
I had to watch all 4 of this "critiques" you made, and wow, are you a manipulative critic. Most of the "arguments" you made were not valid. Some were not even about the subject you were criticizing.
You should at least understand the goal of this video. Instead of minding if this video is scary or not to 9 years old, you should understand it's value of bringing the subject of sustainability to the most destructive civilization ever created: the USA.
@ftabah LOL@you. Understand the goal of the video? Even if there are "Facts" in it that are WRONG? Are you okay with using lies to get a particular view across to KIDS? Sounds to me like you are.
You yourself gave no competent critique to the points that Lee made during this video. In order for any commentary to carry any weight, you must explain where Lee was incorrect in his reasoning. The only situation in which such elaboration wouldn't be necessary is if Lee was indisputably, obviously false. However, he wasn't.
You know how hard it is to shop in Europe. Good luck finding a store that open past 5 PM. And I gotta tell you, the one mall in Copenhagen that's open past 6 PM is very, very, very busy.
@emons87 That doesn't mean he doesn't care about the planet or children. It just means that capitalism is a better way to take care of the planet and our children over the long term. I agree with him.
He properly rebuffed her points, we aren't running out of landfill space, we have way more free time than we ever did before, it's the amount of a chemical that makes the poison, not it simply being there at all, etc.
I am disappointed that he didn't touch on recycling more, it sometimes actually wastes more energy that if we just threw that waste away.
Her ideas would be great if a perfect world were attainable, but it's not.
And I've even seen people complain that Lee doesn't try to acknowledge the idea that Annie has on how to build a new society (with the four icons circling together at the end) when that society she's dreaming of is a reflection of all of her bullshit unsustainbale morally bankrupt claims that were taken down by him. This proves that the haters are left extremists with no idea what to say. Thumbing down n bitching is easy, ESPECIALLY when your opinion is majoritary.
They'll get their comeuppance when their grandkids are broke from the previous generations spending on useless government programs and put them in a crappy, public-run retirement home.
I also love all these women's studies majors whining, "leave her da fuck alone, u SHILL!"
God forbid anyone complain about LiberalViewer "bullying" Glenn Beck. (I'm not a fan, it was just an example.)
Biased libtard assholes should be put on a plane to North Korea if they hate free trade, market competition, and innovation so much, straight into one of the labor camps.
You can say that she's exaggerating. Maybe true but she makes some good valid points. You seemed to be pissed off because you can't make valid points.
Now,are you insulting a nation, by playing Russian music and showing their flag? What do you mean? Wouldn't be better to say you hate communism? Are you saying people in Russia live miserable lives compare to rest of the world? There are other countries in much worse conditions than Russia. If you want to dispute a video do a better research!!
@loucohigh - What good and valid points does she make?
Also, it's not a Russian flag. It's a Soviet flag. You might want to do some better research there. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, murdered millions of its own people, starved millions more, and proved that command economies (like the one Annie wants) just don't work.
The Soviet Union, which was a tremendous polluter, and the creation of the Soviet Union is echoed in her ending call to arms.
@mpc91 Shoud we remember the billions of people that capitalism actually murdered through "free" nations that made wars in the name of free market and profit?
@fraanz1706 - If you want to remember fantasy, go ahead. It's not capitalism that fights wars, as capitalism is inherently peaceful. Crony capitalism and fascism get wars going.
The free market is based on voluntary exchange of goods and services. If force is applied, then the market is no longer free.
@mpc91 Are you kidding me? Remember that the only purpose of the war on terror is to control Iraqi oil, to sustain capitalism. We're still waiting for the weapons of mass destruction that were supposedly on Iraq...
@fraanz1706 No, MI6 found out Sadaam was negotiating for uranium from Nigeria. He also used biological and chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War from 1978-1988, which are classified as WMDs and we haven't any proof that they have been destroyed yet.
Concerning staying in Iraq: We have learned from Afghanistan in the 80s and the aftermath of the Versaille Treaty that a war-torn country with a destroyed infrastructure is prime for extremists, such as the Nazis and Taliban.
@fraanz1706 ..But haven't used them in war. Iraq used them against Israel to get Arabia to force itself against the US if Israel sided with the Coalition, the only ones since 1945 and 1918 (chemical and nuclear respectively). BTW, according to UN resolution 1441, if Iraq didn't openly destroy their WMDs/submit to UN weapons inspection, then they would face the consequences. They didn't fully cooperate in either, leading to carrying out the "consequences" outlined in resolution 1441.
Dude ur too condescending to the point where i stopped taking u seriously. The russian symbols were unnecessary and i felt took you away from being someone i thort was gonna offer a critique per se to someone who like her, is a mere ideologue. the choice is to accept her propoganda or to accept ur propoganda. what a fucken waste of time watchin this so called critique . . .
You make a couple of valid points, though sometimes you come across as more outraged about her insulting America than her getting her facts wrong. Yes, this is how our economy normally works, and yes, some facts were exaggerated, but that doesn't mean we'll be any worse off if we slow or stop consumption - because our resources ARE finite.
However, I draw the line at you showing the Soviet Union flag and playing Russian music. Run out of insults and snarky comments, did you?
I honestly don't know what is funnier about this video; watching a girl who isn't an expert talk about these issues like she knows it, or listening to the creator of this video who obviously doesn't do his research or actually listens to the argument give answers I would hear at an elementary school.
okay, so your a smart dude. but why would you use your time dislodging her generalization of facts, when you could be making this video better? instead, you make it worse by adding insulting connotations.
I don't think the plot of her video was to bust out facts that no one has ever heard of. but make an over exaggerated video to increase awareness on things that are really happening.
To make your argument more valid and convincing I believe you need less condescending tone and more comparing.
Thank you! The first time I watched this video, I found it rather single-minded, simplistic, and just overall ridiculous. She's portraying herself as if I know nothing about this subject and is trying to fill my head with exaggerated opinions, rather then hard-hitting facts. I'm just saying, that if she indeed spent 10 years on this project, she should have come up with a hard-hitting factual hour - 2 hour documentary on the subject, not that 20 minute video... I was thinking about doing this.
That is true. I did actually study why people are more and more bored, depressed and short-term minded in the First World. It came out that the productivity rate sky-rocketed so fastly these late 50 years, that people simply have just too much time, and too little planning and to occupy it. So loads of hours each year go wasted, leaving behind the sensation we're suffering a lack of time, when in fact it is the opposite. And guess what, bigger welfare, more time wasted.
@alonelychild Now compare it to the extreme opposite. China. China needs nearly 200 million people directly, and more 400 indirectly to produce the same output in dollars that the American Industry puts together with 15 million, and more 25 million, adding up to final sum 40 million people. There they don't suffer the mental problems americans, germans, french, sweedens suffer at the same rates, but they do suffer from mental fatigue and over-stressed and under-fed bodies.
I greatly appreciate that you took the time to call her out on all of her false information. I had to watch this video in seventh grade life science, and if I had known this video existed I would've recommended it so my teacher. That being said you have to e able to see her point overall. Her main point is that we need to work on overall sustainability and quality of life for everyone on earth, she just failed to present her data in an understandable and reasonable fashion.
0:36 Woah okay you're an honest guy, and I respected your work in the first three, but I can't overlook what you said about the "environmentalist movement" and our happiness. KNOWLEDGE DOESN'T ALWAYS = HAPPYNESS. YES, we realize that the earth is on a path to inhospitably. Global warming? And yes, we realize that we have more than we need. DON'T tell me what is/isn't making me happy. These videos give me hope and empowerment to do the right thing, not fear. Ignorance=bliss. bliss isn't renewable
and there is a difference in true recycling and non, true recycling (which is what all products will eventually be able to achieve , hopefully) would mean the materials made to produce the item when recycled are as useful as the original materials . so basically the way we recycle metals now, yes we use more metal each year but its only the difference that is actually mined . not the total amount used , if there was one pop can it was used and recycled into one can ,if you need another, mine it
there is no person who can claim to be telling the truth in these situations, id much prefer someone take the time and actually display facts without opinions , both the criticizer and the host were pushing their own biased . the country might be wealthier but not as a whole . and no it is not the job of the government to take care of the people , oh wait but yes it is , if that is what the people want . neither one tells the full story .there is no plan for the market, but people influence it .
This was really good! Thank you for sharing! It's clear that some schools are no longer serving their true purpose of teaching academic knowledge and leaving politics and other moral values up to the parents.
I find it horrifying that this is shown in some schools. The is proof that the end of the world is sooner than we think. Those who have faith in the American dream better speak up or else people like this are going to take over and turn us into a socialist regime.
I hate how she makes it seem like it is the government's problem that we CHOOSE to watch tv, and CHOOSE to purchase goods. People need to take responsibility for their own actions rather than blaming someone else. Also, she does not state facts.
@Commingforyou , take your medicine and unclench your fist from around your flaccid dick already, your heartless materialistic tool ( ; <3 8==D ps i just figgerd out how to do silly things on my robo box!
It's amazing how brainwashed people already are. The facts and evidence are irrelevant. See how propaganda works? Why don't we just ban advertising? Stay away from the mall. Cut up the credit cards. Shut off that HD TV. It's not some corporation's fault. Don't punish the rest of us with government regulations to fix a misplaced guilt trip. Someone who needs to scare children with lies, doesn't have her heart in the right place. This film is evil. Thanks for doing the public a huge service, Lee!
You just denied EVERYTHING she said. That proofs you're another blind wiseguy that doesn't want to see there is a problem. Especially at the end you totally fucked it, when she came with nice and doable solutions!
@Butchersen Well monoculture is not productive or viable, and agriculture in general is not sustainable. Permaculture has shown to only have positives, continuous supply of resources, and high yields of food. There's a great documentary about Bill Mollison and Permaculture called the Permaculture Concept. If it's sustaining people in Zimbabwe there's a good shot it will work for the rest of the world. If you're interested also check out The Seedball Story or Masanobu Fukuoka it works!!
It is very productive and viable, that is why we do it. And how can you consider agriculture to not be sustainable, its been going on for thousands of years.
Also, doing a quick search show that there are many critiques of permaculture, one of which is lower productivity as ecosystems mature.
" If it's sustaining people in Zimbabwe"
It may be sustaining one country, but agriculture allows the US to export food all over the world.
@Butchersen What is this critique on Permaculture from? The point of permaculture is to have productivity grow each year, I mean that is the point of its design. There is a major difference between the types of agriculture you are generalizing, there is conventional agriculture and there is Organic(which has existed for thousands of years). That also leaves the idea of Sustainable Agriculture, which wouldn't be its own term if Agriculture meant that. The US imports a lot of food.
A study called "Weeds or Wild Nature". You say that Permaculture has nothing but Pros, If that were the case we would have started it a long time ago.
The difference between "old &new" agriculture is the the newer ones are better. They are more productive and more durable & less prone to parasites ,contamination, &other types of crop failure. How is that not sustainable?
"The US imports a lot of food."
But it is the #1 exporter of Wheat, Rice, & Corn. #2 for meat.
@Butchersen Weeds or Wild Nature is an article by David Holmgren one of the co-founders of Permaculture, it is not a study. So productive, why is it so heavily subsidized? Why do they use more fertilizer and more pesticide each year? Because monoculture is a fragile system. Biodiversity is what makes ecosystems thrive, i.e. rainforests. Instead of engineering along with nature Convention tries to dominate it. Meat production is a whole other problem. Look up the definition of sustainable
@Butchersen You have a very narrow, probably very young mind, that doesn't comprehend much of sustainability practices (if you need to always use more fertilizer and more pesticide each year to prevent crop failure, then it's not sustainable and it'll all crash creating a barren infertile land after a certain number of cycles), biodiversity means the ability for a wide range of life organisms to coexist since each of them has a role to play in keeping a healthy environment, 2+2. Get schooling!
@munstardude some of what he said was true , not all . and it would show the wiser to take into account both perspectives . ( if you use too much pesticides and the land becomes barren one you should have switched to more eco friendly means of pest control, or two it becomes barren but not eternally, even Chernobyl will be fertile again) she tells you to stop buying things so you don't kill people . well if hospitals didn't acquire new more effective equipment then more people will die or suffer
@Butchersen Lastly the thing about US farming is this, the bottom 20% of farms in the US are producing all the produce you see in the stores. The other 80% are Big Ag which are highly subsidized as in totally unsustainable. Look at what happened to India because of conventional farming, thousands of years of richly developed soils depleted in less than 40 years from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It's happening in America as well, look into Permaculture before you look for critiques.
So what, we have no shortages of food, so we apparently do not more than that.
"The other 80% are Big Ag which are highly subsidized as in totally unsustainable."
I am against subsidies as well, such as with the ethanol boondoggle, But it was not the technique that made it unsustainable, it was govt interference in the industry.
"soils depleted in less than 40 years"
You know what else happened in that time? Millions of people stopped starving to death.
@Butchersen There are no shortages of food because we import so much food. Look I am involved in agriculture on the organic side, and we're surrounded entirely by corn and soy farms. They are barely breaking even these days and are being pushed continuously to use GMO's. You do know that the inventor of synthetic fertilizers Justus Von Liebig retracted his findings 10 years later after the industry already was running wild with it. I'm having the highest yields from permaculture, year 7.
Everything can be sunshine and rainbows for all if we would just let the government take over.

2nd: Is it more that you you don't care about the environment or more that you are an extremist anti russian reactionary?
cuttlefishgem 2 weeks ago
@cuttlefishgem Straw man attack. People actually have the ability to makes themselves happy. That indeed makes it a personal responsibility. Just because there can be some external influences doesn't change that.
Straw man attack 2. He never said he doesn't care about the environment. He critique on her was that her ideas for a better world are a complete failure.
Also, anti-communism does not equal anti-russian.
TWSceptic 6 days ago in playlist Top Videos HowTheWorldWorks
@TWSceptic 1. People's ability to make themselves happy is often transformed into a convenient absolution for those who show no regard for the wellbeing of others, which is precisely the sense one gets from this guy. 2. He made it quite clear that he has no regard for the anxieties of those of us who are concerned about e.g. deforestation. He made it clear that he has no concern about deforestation. He does not care about the environment. 3. Who said anything about communism?
cuttlefishgem 6 days ago
@cuttlefishgem 1. I do not get that sense at all. I get a libertarians sense, which is just one ideology against another. I think it's the right one. 2. Where? THis isn't an opinion on that, but I understand he does not believe the government actually helps against deforestation. I tend to agree. Where did he say he doesn't care about the environment? That's what you seem to think. 3. You, when you mentioned the Soviet anthem.
TWSceptic 6 days ago
@TWSceptic I think people like the guy doing this critique use russian history and american cold war anti-communist hysteria as not only a straw man but as a bogey man to appeal to the sense of fear in the U.S. indoctrinated and to lash out at anything that points out the failings of contemporary hypercapitalism.
cuttlefishgem 6 days ago
@cuttlefishgem There is no such thing as 'hypercapitalism'. That's what's the straw man. You either have capitalism, or you have a mix of socialism and capitalism, which is not real capitalism and like communism tends to ... not work.
TWSceptic 6 days ago
@TWSceptic So, you either have capitalism or you have capitalism CONTAMINATED by little evil communist elements which wreck the purity and beauty of it. Yeah right. That's exactly the same style of thinking used by the religious fundamentalists on all sides who feel the purity and beauty of THEIR system must be maintained by destroying the impure influences. It's binary thinking ...paranoid thinking in fact.
cuttlefishgem 6 days ago
@cuttlefishgem The problems are a) as has been pointed out to you, there is no such thing as "hypercapitalism" and b) you have yet to describe the "failings of capitalism". I am curious to see whether you include world poverty, living standards, the Great Depression, the current economic crisis, the BP oil spill, unemployment or income inequality which are either not due to capitalism at all, are not a problem at all or have actually improved as a direct result of capitalism.
FletchforFreedom 3 days ago
@FletchforFreedom a) There is no such thing as hyper capitalism? Because you say so?
b) Failings of capitalism: the poisoning of hundreds of people including children at places like Agbogbloshi in Nigeria in order to maximise profits in Europe and the States. Shrinking middle class and increasing poverty of the masses coupled with ever growing obscene wealth in an ever shrinking minority of elites in the U.S. and Europe.
Your list is not directly related to hypercapitalism? Because you say so?
cuttlefishgem 3 days ago
@cuttlefishgem a) the term is meaningless, b) Ghana's infringement on the private property rights of its citizens in order to maximize its own revenue (and now seek aid to address the problem) is not a failure of capitalism, nor is a government caused economic crisis (now or in 1929) nor are the "masses" (excepting recessionary periods) becomeing increasingly impoverished - exactly the opposite is the case. Capitalism has HALVED world poverty rates in the last four decades.
FletchforFreedom 2 days ago
@cuttlefishgem My list: 1&2) world poverty has declined and living standards have improved as a direct result of capitalism; 3&4) the Great Depression and current crisis resulted from socialistic government meddling with the money supply; 5) the BP oil spill was due to regulations that pushed the rig out to see and liability caps given by government; 6) unemployement - see 3&4; and 7) of what difference income equality in a system that has created the wealthiest "poor" in the world?
FletchforFreedom 2 days ago
@cuttlefishgem the definition of capitalism is the private exercise of the powers of ownership over the means of production - in short, the free market. Hyper means over, above or excessive. How does something become more, particularly excessively more free than 100% free? Capitalism is the absence of economic restraint. How can something be more unrestrained than completely unrestrained? That you choose to prefer more of a socialist hybrid does not give the term any credibility.

@silviu0o Yea the economy as we reffer to it, is every product / service that you posess or get. The more accurate term comes from shortage, meaning, nothing you want/need is infinite.
shining3210 3 weeks ago
@silviu0o For those that think that there are more important things than the economy like people, community, and "sharing is caring" inevitably leads to a situation where the opposite of what is intended results. I guess there is always a tendency for people to have socialist values, being social creatures, but socialist values to guide a society leads to unfettered corruption and is the road to serfdom. People learned that the hard way.

There they don't suffer the mental problems americans, germans, french, sweedens suffer at the same rates, but they do suffer from mental fatigue and over-stressed and under-fed bodies.

there is no person who can claim to be telling the truth in these situations, id much prefer someone take the time and actually display facts without opinions , both the criticizer and the host were pushing their own biased . the country might be wealthier but not as a whole . and no it is not the job of the government to take care of the people , oh wait but yes it is , if that is what the people want . neither one tells the full story .there is no plan for the market, but people influence it .

stupid critique...

This was really good! Thank you for sharing! It's clear that some schools are no longer serving their true purpose of teaching academic knowledge and leaving politics and other moral values up to the parents.

I like the video, the original that is. I find the "critique" sophomoric, insipid and servile.

What a stupid fat cunt. I'd pull my kid out the school this horseshit is taught in.

@Hokibukisa yeah, that bitch doesn't know shit about economics or modern culture.

What's wrong with you?

One word "Permaculture"
Milkshakemoneytwist1 7 months ago
@Milkshakemoneytwist1
Will it be equally as productive and viable as agriculture?
Butchersen 7 months ago
@Butchersen Well monoculture is not productive or viable, and agriculture in general is not sustainable. Permaculture has shown to only have positives, continuous supply of resources, and high yields of food. There's a great documentary about Bill Mollison and Permaculture called the Permaculture Concept. If it's sustaining people in Zimbabwe there's a good shot it will work for the rest of the world. If you're interested also check out The Seedball Story or Masanobu Fukuoka it works!!
Milkshakemoneytwist1 7 months ago
@Milkshakemoneytwist1
Butchersen 7 months ago
@Butchersen What is this critique on Permaculture from? The point of permaculture is to have productivity grow each year, I mean that is the point of its design. There is a major difference between the types of agriculture you are generalizing, there is conventional agriculture and there is Organic(which has existed for thousands of years). That also leaves the idea of Sustainable Agriculture, which wouldn't be its own term if Agriculture meant that. The US imports a lot of food.
Milkshakemoneytwist1 7 months ago
@Milkshakemoneytwist1
Butchersen 7 months ago
@Butchersen Weeds or Wild Nature is an article by David Holmgren one of the co-founders of Permaculture, it is not a study. So productive, why is it so heavily subsidized? Why do they use more fertilizer and more pesticide each year? Because monoculture is a fragile system. Biodiversity is what makes ecosystems thrive, i.e. rainforests. Instead of engineering along with nature Convention tries to dominate it. Meat production is a whole other problem. Look up the definition of sustainable
Milkshakemoneytwist1 7 months ago
@Milkshakemoneytwist1
"So productive, why is it so heavily subsidized?"
Because the govt is trying to get support for big business, like w/ ethanol, even though it has been proven to be a vastly inferior resource.
"Why do they use more fertilizer and more pesticide each year? "
To prevent crop failure. something that is now nearly nonexistent because of it.
"Biodiversity"
And Agriculture feeds billions of ppl
"up the definition of sustainable"
You never described how it is unsustainable.
Butchersen 7 months ago
@Butchersen You have a very narrow, probably very young mind, that doesn't comprehend much of sustainability practices (if you need to always use more fertilizer and more pesticide each year to prevent crop failure, then it's not sustainable and it'll all crash creating a barren infertile land after a certain number of cycles), biodiversity means the ability for a wide range of life organisms to coexist since each of them has a role to play in keeping a healthy environment, 2+2. Get schooling!
munstardude 6 months ago
@munstardude some of what he said was true , not all . and it would show the wiser to take into account both perspectives . ( if you use too much pesticides and the land becomes barren one you should have switched to more eco friendly means of pest control, or two it becomes barren but not eternally, even Chernobyl will be fertile again) she tells you to stop buying things so you don't kill people . well if hospitals didn't acquire new more effective equipment then more people will die or suffer
RobertDerusha 6 months ago
@Butchersen Lastly the thing about US farming is this, the bottom 20% of farms in the US are producing all the produce you see in the stores. The other 80% are Big Ag which are highly subsidized as in totally unsustainable. Look at what happened to India because of conventional farming, thousands of years of richly developed soils depleted in less than 40 years from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It's happening in America as well, look into Permaculture before you look for critiques.
Milkshakemoneytwist1 7 months ago
" bottom 20% of farms"
So what, we have no shortages of food, so we apparently do not more than that.
"The other 80% are Big Ag which are highly subsidized as in totally unsustainable."
I am against subsidies as well, such as with the ethanol boondoggle, But it was not the technique that made it unsustainable, it was govt interference in the industry.
"soils depleted in less than 40 years"
You know what else happened in that time? Millions of people stopped starving to death.
Butchersen 7 months ago
@Butchersen There are no shortages of food because we import so much food. Look I am involved in agriculture on the organic side, and we're surrounded entirely by corn and soy farms. They are barely breaking even these days and are being pushed continuously to use GMO's. You do know that the inventor of synthetic fertilizers Justus Von Liebig retracted his findings 10 years later after the industry already was running wild with it. I'm having the highest yields from permaculture, year 7.
