yes john made good and bad decissions just like the rest of us. he was on a journey of discovering his OWN beliefs. Yoko did not make John anything. John had his own mind and made his own decissions. he just loved Yoko so fully that there was not room for interfierence from the outside. John believed in himself, he even said he didnt believe in Yoko. he believed in them as a couple and people should respect that.
When you've been alive for a few decades you will realize that life is not a fairy tale, no matter how much some of us wish it were. Attach any label you like to the man-in this song he shows himself as a realist. John Lennon had hopes for peace and unity but he believed thses things could be accomplished by humans and not some magical force working invisibly from the wings. For this vision, on his birthday, I honour him.
I love this song is so beautiful, and Lennon's voice, wow... besides the drums are courtesy of Mr. Ringo Starr, such an underrated drummer. His drums here give such a hypnotic ambiance, each fill and change is different from the previous, Ringo was present in the 2 best albums made by any Beatle post-Beatles era (All Things Must Pass and Plastic Ono Band). Wonderful song.
Lennon was honest he believed what he sang, even if we don't agree somewhat. I don't care what people say Yoko was sh"!$!
@9carva i agree wholly with this songs message. you only need too believe in yourself. none in the myriad of superficial mechanisms of mind control that he lists. i dont mean that as in theres some conspiracy or anything, but all those thing are external that ultimately have little to do with who you really are.
John wasn't always like that I think he used to be catholic but when he got with yoko she made him become an atheist :( poor John tricked by the blindness of what he thought was love ( even though he was my favourite beatle there are many choices I wish he didn't make, but it's all set and done. And sadly you can't change the past) :( and plus, CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP THE FIGHTING AND THE ARGUING AND THE RUDE LANGUAGE BECAUSE I BET ON MY LIFE THAT JOHN WOULDN'T LIKE THAT! AND NOBODY NE
I felt SOOOOOOOO sick to my stomach listening to this song you wouldn't believe. I was crying and praying for like an hour asking god to forgive me for what I had just heard. It was not a very hood time for me and I'm only 14 and I experienced that, I love John Lennon but not so much, some of the choices he made :/
@123jsbach yeah same here, John was a great man that made bad decisions, but sadly that's been set and done, can't change the past and I wish I could though
What you talking about? I vaguely remember it was you that was questioning Lennon's sense of clarity when you referred to him as foolish. Im honestly not sure what you are "exactly" asking me. Live life with love and respect to others. Be honest with yourself and think things through yourself. Dont believe things just because you have always been told it to be the case. Amen.
@onlyjoetee I think that it is necessary to question everything. Otherwise you are in danger of being an unthinking being that is easily manipulated, and that is not what life should be about mate. Life is about freedom of choice. Or at least it should be.
In days gone by I had to inwardly appologise to god for listening to this. Now I am free of the indoctrination I faced as a nipper, I still believe in god, but I also believe in being honest with myself.
Jonn.L was a good singer/song writer but does John's spriritual beliefs realy matter ? Did he have more of a spiritual insight than the average adult.
John was not atheist he just believed that people who deem themselves as 'religious' focused too much on the religion itself and its leader as apposed to the message it was trying to convey.
I believe the only reason that John wanted to be like Elvis and be rich and famous like him...was because he wanted to find happyness somehow after his earlier tough years, then when he found it with Yoko Ono, the Beatles were a second priority in his life..and made him more human and happier, and another thing that really stands out in this song is the separation that he referes with his Egotistical, selfcentered, and "Bigger than Elvis and Jesus" Beatle figure and the human peace and loving
And also how John says, "I don't believe in Beatles," well, we all know that isn't true. He was just trying to say that he's no longer a part of them, he's just John. Paul McCartney said in an interview a few years back, "John was the kind of guy that if you punched him in the face and asked if that hurt he'd say no. We repaired our relationship and he said he missed The Beatles more than anything." And yet he tried so hard to prove that he didn't.
I love this song. I was brought up as a Catholic, but I agree with that quote that the poster put about John saying his beliefs about God. This is a beautiful song and if you don't agree with it or like it then you don't have to post your comments. Why did you even look it up in the first place?
I love the ending of this when he says, ' I just believe in me..' It's so wonderful. John will always live on.
...and the resolve stating that the dream is over after stating that he "just believe(s) in me"------one of the most overlooked verses in the bible---believe in yourself-as you have believed in me. Therefore he did believe in "Christ" per se but just that visceral reaction to American Christianity that some of us go through. I heard this song for the first time a month ago, to my disbelief. It is a brilliant observation of our superficial world.

hey WZY rover: Forced? What feeling and genius in simplicty-taking a small handfull of chords and emoting this clearly deeply-rooted sentiment and having the soul to bring it out for the rest of us. What artist today could write this song from a place of sincerity? Even the most (thought to be) soulful today wouldn't touch this, let alone write it and release it. You're forgiven. Put your iPod on and dial up your John Tesh.
@chilibro Here's a quote from John himself that seems to explain his religious beliefs somewhat.
John, "I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong. "
@bisacciayo That's a direct quote from John and there have been other quotes from people like Sean that have implied that, how that quote states, is how John's views on things were. Now, I'm not really sure why exactly the possibility of John being an Atheist has anything to do with this because, well, that doesn't seem to be the case, though it may be.
@DomoStopMotion That quote is (I think) from 1965. In the late 60s and the early 70s it was obvious he was an atheist. After that he continued believing as he did before.
@bisacciayo john was all remember that you will never see someone like that again so enjoy the good, bad & the ugly of the greatest music person of all-time...he blew them all away you name them & ill knock them out cold...john lennon was it
@chilibro That's when someone isn't an atheist or religious...It's when you aren't sure what you believe and when you don't know whether you believe God exists or not.
@kermeal that was mean.. And this song is so sad. I cry every time :( but I think, just this once, we shouldn't listen to John (even though he was the smartest man alive) and just keep believeing. He would have wanted it that way ;)
@kermeal please.. we can say things like that and believe that it doesn't matter. It does. Think about eternity. Nobody wants to offend John or anyone else..The truth will come to all of us the day when we leave this life.
he didnt die bcuz of god or jesus, he died bcuz of the psycho of mark chapman. "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans". -John Lennon. "You either get tired of fighting for piece, or you die" -John Lennon
