holy cows!! haha u do milk oldschool. I work in a swing 21 parallel parlor, 350 head of cattle. i cant imagine doing all of that by hand like u do. automatic take-off is so much nicer.
actually tie stalls require more work then freestalls. There is no way to keep cows outside all year so they have to live somewhere. I bet you have never even been to a dairy farm have you?
you can keep them in loose housing, but that would be more expensive, since you can keep less cows on the same space. (I used to word on a dairy farm with loose housing and grazing in summer)
hey jdboy your tellin me you updated your flick im shootin my film jersey style pipeline and 60 cows milkin with a sound system in the barn lol i love your flick but we are updated a little with our milkin system but i love your flick it makes my day im an old aggige ffa from way back ttyl jeff
i never updated my flick, its staying just the way it is, to give the folks a little ride on the old style time, good luck with your flick let me know when you are done with it, i want to watch it.
i need to figure out how to use u tube maybe in my spare time all the girls a getting ready to have calfs had like 5 news calfs this week i will talk to u soon keep up the hard work remember pre dip and post dip not just hot water!!!!!!!!
Who's the frisky red & white at the end of the video? I can't tell if she's ayrshire or red/white holstien. But, she appears like she's looking for some attention, handout/treat, or a good petting. All your cow's must have names? I seen a few names at the end of the video. Are those cows on the lot dry cows/heifers? They sure do look contented. Do you have any Linebacks or Jerseys on the farm?
im pretty sure she's a red and white holstien, all the cows do have names it makes it a lot easier for milking and stuff, no Jereseys or anything just holstien, and those are heifers at the end
Awesome video! I love the old school milking system. Reminds me of milking at the organic dairy farm I used to help out at. We even had two milking buckets exactly like the one's in the video. Seeing this video makes me want to start milking cows again. Do you farm organically or conventional? I seen some where that you are from Thorp, WI. I am from Pulaski, WI.
Organinc dairy farming is where everything is raised/produced without the use of chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, drugs, etc. All crops, seeds, and purchased feeds must have a organic certification. Soil health is maintained by frequent crop rotation, culivating, manure, minerals like calcium phosphate/gypsum, and grazing. Animal health is maintained by proper nutrition, vitamins, salts/minerals, and a watchful herdsman. For more info check out Mosa Midwest Organic Services Association.
Pulaski is located about 18 miles Northwest of Green Bay, or 21 miles East southeast of Shawano. Highways 29, 32, 156, and 160 go through or near Pulaski.
I can remember when I was in FFA back in High School. I can't recall attending that many activities. Once in a while we would attend a leadership conference, or a competition. A couple years the FFA went to Louisville, Kentucky for some sort of national conference. I was a bit more involved in VICA than FFA during my high school years. The thing with our FFA back then, was if you didn't grow up on a farm you were sort of and outcast/black sheep. I didn't grow up on a farm, but I worked on one.
It should be a requirement that students have some sort of agricultural background or at least work on a dairy farm once before they are allowed to join FFA. But that would be politically incorrect, and there'd be law suits over that.
i totally agree with you, most of the kids just join for the trips and get out of school, never come to the meetings or anything, just sign up for the trips
Very interesting to see other farms in action. We milk 320 cows, and I couldn't imagine going through this process every milking. Definitely old school here.
What about polka music? I aways thought polka music was popular in that part of the state. Seems to me when you travel out to Wausau, Mosinee, Stevens Point, Rosholt, Medford, Thorp, Iola that polka music was part of life out there. Sadly, in Pulaski I think polka music is dieing. If it wasn't for Pulaski Polka Days I think polkas would be dead here.
At the organic dairy farm I worked on we'd always turn on the local AM polka radio show on during Sunday morning milking. After the local AM polka show was done, we'd tune in the WDEZ Wausau polka show. I think the cows would go on strike if we didn't turn on polkas. The cows would probably lose track of what day of the week it is too if their were no polkas.
At my old farm we had a pipline milker... it was pretty fast but we had to bend down for every animal.. We were going to build a parlor but then we sold the cows..
how long does it take you to milk 20 cows with that system? really intrested in starting a organic dairy farm sucks i gota rent though if i do

Milking in a tie stall would suck

Love your tie stall barn. So many canadian dairy farms milk in tie stalls. It is a great way to manage a small herd and produce quality milk.
