I understand that child abusement may have been common during michael's childhood, but Joe did take it a little far in my opinion. I read that one night, joe creeped through michael's bedroom window in a fright mask and screamed, which led to mental health problems for michael, such as recuring nightmares of being kidnapped and sleeping disorders. remember, katherine also BEAT the children. she said so in her book that she believes in corporal punishment no matter the age of the child. however, her beatings were different from his. also back in those days, that was how it was, especially in black communities. my parents also beat me but aren't abusive. it depends on how u do it every child has limits to what they can take, and joseph was too harsh on them.

Katherine did mention though that there are times that she would purposefully not tell Joe about some of the things the kids did, because she believed that he took the punishments too far. This information is mentioned in her book so it is from a reliable source.
@GUURL101 something is obviously wrong and it needs to be addressed. I wished that Katherine put both Joseph and Michael in some type of family counseling that way they could work through some issues that they had. Michael would have done well to get someone objective to talk with and teach him how to work through the past - trauma. My mom was beaten to the point that she does not remember anything before the age of seven. It got so bad that grown men would leave the house.

Joe Jackson likely abused his children like most black families did in those days. Friends of families sometimes would hit people's children. Getting a switch outside is a common thing folks can talk about. Because the Jackson's a famous and exposed to the mainstream - this type of discipline seems extreme. All that I can say about this is that everybody has got some skeletons in their closets as well as in their families. It might be easy to sit back and try to judge the whole situation but no one will ever know what kind of difficulties Joe and Catherine Jackson had to endure in order to make the Jackson five the success which they became. I agree that Joe Jackson may have scraficed personal things to see his children succeed, but I believe at first, the need for his sons to be successful in the music business was a personal goal of his FIRST and foremost and then somewhere down the line, MJ and his brothers started to enjoy performing. Why did he wait years, after all those child molestation charges, after people were saying AWFUL things about him, to talk about that stuff? Why did LaToya wait until she was so unsuccessful to come out and say those AWFUL things about him? Right now, I'm into a lot of J5 stuff. Now Jackie wasn't in the business like he was anymore. He wasn't in the spotlight anymore, and he liked it that way. That man CRIED, on television. Saying that he couldn't understand why LaToya said all those things. I've seen pictures, seemingly during the years the J5 would be gone where LaToya and Joe are together, laughing....

According to her, in a video I saw with her in Mike back in 85, she wanted to be a star like Diana Ross or Barbara Streisand....she wanted to do acting and singing and be extremely successful at both. I understand that child abusement may have been common during michael's childhood, but Joe did take it a little far in my opinion. I read that one night, joe creeped through michael's bedroom window in a fright mask and screamed, which led to mental health problems for michael, such as recuring nightmares of being kidnapped and sleeping disorders. Joe did this just so that micheal would stop leaving his bedroom wndow open at night. Bit drastic

Joe did beat his children..And so what? That's how it was back in those days. If the parents didn't beat the children, the neighbors will. He beat his children to teach them wrong and rights in the world, also to get better. He was a good father. If it wasn't for Joe, there would've been no Jackson Five or anything. I mean, ok, maybe for the others it was just beating, but Michael, he tortured the poor thing for no reason. If he messed up during rehearsal he used to beat him and throw him in a dark basement or the closet until he felt like taking him out. Michael didn't deserve that. I mean, come on now! remember, katherine also BEAT the children. she said so in her book that she believes in corporal punishment no matter the age of the child. however, her beatings were different from his. also back in those days, that was how it was, especially in black communities. my parents also beat me but aren't abusive. it depends on how u do it every child has limits to what they can take, and joseph was too harsh on them.

@GUURL101 That's right and I find it funny that Michael never got upset over that. Katherine's punishments seemed to be a last resort type deal and you could equivalent it to spanking. Katherine did mention though that there are times that she would purposefully not tell Joe about some of the things the kids did, because she believed that he took the punishments too far. This information is mentioned in her book so it is from a reliable source.

I wished that Katherine put both Joseph and Michael in some type of family counseling that way they could work through some issues that they had. Michael would have done well to get someone objective to talk with and teach him how to work through the past - trauma. My mom was beaten to the point that she does not remember anything before the age of seven. It got so bad that grown men would leave the house.

ITV 2003 - Michael Jackson - The beatings from his father Joe Jackson. oh yeah they did. its horrible. the title above is from that documentary "living with Michael Jackson" Michael describes it. A few of his siblings have talked about other incidents too. The family really doesn't talk too much of it but when they do it's bad...like real bad. Joe was honing his childrens' skills & he did it the only way he knew how. Don't agree with the bullying but maybe he didn't know any better. He didn't left his children at the industry's discretion. Joe Jackson likely abused his children like most black families did in those days. Friends of families sometimes would hit people's children. Getting a switch outside is a common thing folks can talk about. Because the Jackson's a famous and exposed to the mainstream - this type of discipline seems extreme. I think Joe Jackson was EXTRA with not being sensitive and Michael was JUST THE OPPOSITE - VERY SENSITIVE - therefore, the two did not mix. But I think during the trial Michael began to appreciate Joe's sternness and toughness. He told Geraldo during his 2005 trial that he's strong like his father!

I'm studying to be a Kindergarten teacher and if i have evidence of a parent beating a child, I am to report them first thing. there is no asking the parent if there doing it for a good cause. All that I can say about this is that everybody has got some skeletons in their closets as well as in their families. It might be easy to sit back and try to judge the whole situation but no one will ever know what kind of difficulties Joe and Catherine Jackson had to endure in order to make the Jackson five the success which they became. They are a phenomenal family in spite of their hardships. They are a testament to the world that with hard word and determination anyone can make it. RIP MJ!

I think Joe jacskon was trying to raise his children properly the best way he knew how. His methods may have been wrong but his motives were not.

I totally agree with you..Joe Jackson probably has regretted the abuse he inflicted on his children...in addition it was still wrong as hell. God blessed Michael with his talented..not his father. He would have made it regardless.

I agree that Joe Jackson may have scraficed personal things to see his children succeed, but I believe at first, the need for his sons to be successful in the music business was a personal goal of his FIRST and foremost and then somewhere down the line, MJ and his brothers started to enjoy performing. Joe also probably saw his children as a "gold mine" per say..you know..as a way to get out of the poverty they lived in for many years. They made, yes indeed, but it scared MJ for life.

hopeodmnc is right! Back in the days people got whoop with anything...especially in the south! My grandmama is a little older than Michael and she told me storys about how they got beat with anything, and she turned out great! If it wasn't for Joe Jackson pushing them you wouldn't know a Jackson 5 or a Michael Jackson!

He teased him for having a big nose and spots when he was young ffs what kind of father does that? that surely isnt teaching him anything. He made him feel like trash... not only did hes father tease but hes brothers teased him too because of jealousy.
He hit him with iron chords and belts to descipline him and hes brother, having 9 kids was no excuse to treat hes kids the way he did, it was completely unacceptable!
Michael hates him so much that he throws up when he sees him.

PAY ATTENTION OKAY!!!!! He did not abuse those kids! I don't care what anyone says. He had to set those kids straight. Look, he had nine kids.... nine!!!!! Can you raise nine kids in America & all of them would be successful and in the spot light? Can u?!! Look at Farrah Fawcett for instance. Her only son is in detention. So please, please, stop with the rude comments about his dad. He does care. He want his kids to be the best & not end up in a jail or on the street or a gang. He is a true dad.

I agree with you. But I can't imagine beating my kids. I would've taken a less scarring way of punishing them. Although he made some bad choices nobody is perfect.

He hit him countless times if he got a dance step wrong and that was hes way of teaching them something.
I blame him for alot of the stuff thats happened to michael.
At the BET Awards in Los Angeles he turned up and the guy asked how he was going and he says "Im great, my family is doing pretty good" has if it was nothing and than he talks about hes album...
