Cliched I know but Boys Own stuff from the opening to the end credits. No fancy cgi just good honest photography and acting with a brilliant soundtrack . God forbid they try a remake, this is a classic left well alone as it can't be bettered.
Nothing takes me back to my childhood like this movie does. This movie had everything a young boy (and middle aged guy) could ever wish for. The ultimate bad guys vs. the ultimate good guys, breath taking scenery, a castle, mystery, adventure, espionage, tension, explosive action and two beautiful women!
@MrPosh55 It was a little preposterous, you have to admit. Everything the heroes shot at seemed to flip and explode, and the plan was so over-the-top that it stretched imagination. How could the Brits know that Cartwright Jones and the double agents would be conveniently dining with the commandant? How could they jump from a cable car into ice water and just carry on? The list is long! Nevertheless, when I saw it as a kid I thought it was just great; lots of twists and thrills.
even though i first saw this movie as an adult, it still always reminds me of my childhood quest for adventure. this is a truly great adventure movie.
My grandma showed this film to me every month when I was little, and I still own that copy on VHS. this is by far my favourite World War 2 film, the score is absolutely incredible, and so is the acting.
@darkarts59 naa, only captured ones, i dont know what year this is supposed to be. Its fiction anyway...They could etc have rebuild a crashed downed Junkers plane from England.
For me this is the first ever modern movie: lots of cuts (asl of just 6 seconds), very violent (highest body count of any Clint Eastwood film) and a script as tight as a drum (the opening scene drops you right in the action with the back story given by flashback)
Thank you for posting this. And thank you, Alistair MacLean for this book, The Guns of Navarone, Force 10 from Navarone, Ice Sation Zebra, and H.M.S. Ulysses (a damn sad story if there was one.)
This film should not work Burton is clearly hung over, it has no sense of realism it has some quite ludicrous plot devices but yet I can't help watching it when it's on TV. It's like watching a Roger Moore Bond film ridiculous but compelling.
when i first heard this music i thought what a load of crap then i saw the film and my outlook totally changed . watching the junkers flying low through the mountains was brilliant
I have always liked war movies, but this is unusual war movie. It shows war from the other side, than I'm used to see. It's movie full of great scenes (for instance in the room with fireplace or duel at the cableway). It's my favorite cloak-and-dagger movie.
This is my all-time favourite war film, total tosh but very well done. And it played an instrumental part in the development of the classic computer game 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Operation Resurrection', anyone who has played that game and seen this film will know the similarities between them. The castle and especially the cable car were based on this film. Great stuff...
Thanks for posting - this is a great clip! My family and I just went on a trip to the mountains and a cable car ride - and the first thing I thought about was this film and its wonderful score.
If they came out with a film on the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, they should use this soundtrack for when the helicopters arrived at the compound
@trekaddict thanks Trek. I have not read the book, does it come on DVD ? > ahhahaha
The video I talked about showing the castle is here on youtube somewhere, I found it AFTER this one. it is a Tour of the castle and grounds. very nicely done.
It would make sense that it is covered with snow, everything else on location is and the road is very steep and winding.
@SuperChuckRaney Ha ha. Reminds me of that scene in Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" where the two guys make a five minute climb up a hill, then it turns out there's a secret tunnel :)
@HenryvKeiper Yes, but it was secret. So they couldn't have known it before right? It's like when you take a plane to some city in a world and it takes 8 hours till you get there. Maybe there is a secret bike which can transport you to the same city within 3 minutes. But if you don't know it, you have no choice right? :D
I have seen this movie more then 12 times. The first time I saw this movie I was like 6 or 7 years old. That is more then 11 years a go right now and this movie is still one of my all time favorites together with The Great Escape and the Longest Day. I actually have a realy big movie poster of this film in a nice big frame in my game/movie room.
I love WW2 movies. Have more then 350 WW2 movies on dvd's and blu-ray.
Clint Eastwood is also my all time favorite actor and director!
@SuperChuckRaney the film did try to stay close to the book , but anyway , how could you build a damn great castle without a road to get the cement up there ?
Had to be one .
he worst bit of the film was that helicopter , could have mocked something up looking more period just by sticking tape strips to the bubble .
And the Harvard trainers pretending to be luftwaffe fighters on the airfield at the film's end .
This movie is one of the best war/military movies of all time, but for some reason somewhat forgotten by many. Classic Eastwood and Burton. One of Eastwoods' best. When this theme is heard in concert it will make the hair stand up on your neck, and you can just see the JU88 and the snow, and the castle.
Someone mentioned "hypothermia from the drenching in the river".. remember, the Uniforms were WOOL back then.... made a difference! Wool will help keep you warm even when wet.. and an MP40 taking out the tower??? quite possible, for a guy who knows how to SHOOT (trajectory wise)..... but it's for entertainment! LOL!
hope at least some of your folks were able to see this on the big screen, as I was lucky enough to have done. well, at least see if you can view it on a projection t.v. some of movie theaters ought to re-run some of these good flicks at reduced prices so ppl can see 'em on the big screen and maybe have a commentator after the film to lead discussion.
I saw this film when it came out. The scenery is incredible and the score unforgetable. I rented a copy and showed it to my two sons, and they were hooked on the story as much as I was origninally.
Dear Friends, this film strike a chord with me. My family were members of the Italian Resistance. In the town centre, in Italian Alps, was the Headquarters of the German Armies in Italy; just above, in the forest, was my grandmother and mother house, the Headquarters of the Resistance. Many and many dramatic events took place, which could provide the material for many films like “Where the Eagles Dare”.
As a child this was my favourite film of all. I saw it once and then waited, what seemed an eternity, to see it again. This must be one of the greatest film openings ever, up there with 'Get Carter' (1971.)The Junkers Ju-52 (Tante Ju) hugging the peaks as our boys enter a somewhat suicidal, false flag mission deep behind enemy lines. McLean's plot is absolutely brilliant. A glorious, over the top, boy's own adventure, and as such it could hardly be any better.
@MrTurnandslip same here man, I still love it though. Top 10 ever for me :). I really wish they still made WW2 movies of this style (longer, more dialogue, more adventure less "realistic", etc.)
@MrTurnandslip - This part is better than the book. In the book, its a Lancaster in a blinding snow storm, so you would never see these awesome scenes.
Composer Ron Goodman wrote just terrific film scores for a whole bunch of 60's WW2 movies...the first one of his to be added to my collection (which now numbers over 300) was 633 Squadron, found in a $1 bin at a discount department store in 1981.
and you've reminded me of grand torino were clint says "ever notice how sometimes you come across somebody you shouldn't have #^*#ed with?" Well, I'm that guy"
@abcdefghijk70833 Now I'm reminded of the movie "Tommy Boy," and I'm imagining of Richard Burton telling Clint Eastwood, "Look, you want me to take a dump in a box for you and mark it 'guaranteed' I will - I've got spare time."
@HenryvKeiper and you've reminded me of grand torino were clint says "ever notice how sometimes you come across somebody you shouldn't have #^*#ed with?" Well, I'm that guy"
Richard & Clint were greatly aided by the fact the Germans couldn't seem to hit anything with their weapons or notice anything going on right in front of them. Despite this (and very convoluted plot) it's a wonderful movie that has obviously influenced the Indiana Jones films.
Mark Gattis must be a fan of this film, in the Dr Who epsiode Victory of The Daleks a radio operator is heard saying Broadsword calling 'Danny Boy, Broadsword calling Danny Boy 'cue an hour of my time trying to remember where I had heard it before. I eventually got it and without reference to google. I must remind myself to get a life sometime.
The intro to this superb movie is enthralling, with the musical score, the scenery and the engine noises of the plane:It brings you right in to the movie.I always liked Anton Diffring as well as Burton/Eastwood-he always played the German officer role with great style. Thanks for posting!
I have no doubt in my mind that this is the BEST war movie ever made...grew up with this , had everything in it , from SOE to Clint Eastwood....broadsword calling dannyboy....awesome.......and written by a Scotmans...all good!
@HenryvKeiper You are indeed right, I shall do my research before posting comments. However I always thought that the helicopter scene in the film was always a little "out of place" and uneccessary.
Brilliant! No one discusses the unbelievable car escape scene, allied proof grenades, escape through a freezing river that does not cause hypothermia let alone death, mass destruction and death
Broadsword calling Danny Boy......... What a text alert that would be. Has to be one of the best quotes of all time.

@abcdefghijk70833 Ah yes. Maybe what helped Clint survive contact with the Germans was he had a metal plate under his uniform.

@HenryvKeiper
because of that the punk felt lucky.

@abcdefghijk70833 Now I'm reminded of the movie "Tommy Boy," and I'm imagining of Richard Burton telling Clint Eastwood, "Look, you want me to take a dump in a box for you and mark it 'guaranteed' I will - I've got spare time."

@HenryvKeiper and you've reminded me of grand torino were clint says "ever notice how sometimes you come across somebody you shouldn't have #^*#ed with?" Well, I'm that guy"
abcdefghijk70833 11 months ago
@HenryvKeiper
he also probably felt lucky

Poor screenplay is right. A helicopter ? come on, how to ruin a good film.
24765968 1 year ago
@24765968 They had helicopters back then. That discussion has been discussed ad nauseum in the helicopter video.
HenryvKeiper 1 year ago 5
@HenryvKeiper You are indeed right, I shall do my research before posting comments. However I always thought that the helicopter scene in the film was always a little "out of place" and uneccessary.
24765968 1 year ago
@24765968 Just be thankful there weren't any James Bond-like helicopter chases or crashes :)

@HenryvKeiper yes, this movie was "over the top" but in a more literal way.. I see the Warner gestapo has removed some other scenes I had saved...

Brilliant! No one discusses the unbelievable car escape scene, allied proof grenades, escape through a freezing river that does not cause hypothermia let alone death, mass destruction and death
