  • Why is it that every Amazing Video of an amazing drummer always results in Travis barker being in the comments?

We dont want your fucking travis barker comments here. That name shouldnt even be allow to exist in the presence of jojo mayer drumming.

    Got a problem?

    Go bitch over it.

  • No he's not a nice drummer, he's the worlds best drummer!!!! Intact I think I would call the "drum"! Because he is the drum himself!!!

  • lol, he turned the snare on with his foot

  • probably one of the most show off solos ive ever seen.

  • yea hes better then bonham

  • He's great but not no John Bonham.

  • Jo Jo Mayer is the best drummer ever!!!!!

  • Did he just loosen the snare with his foot?

  • What's funny is how much better Jojo Mayer is NOW. He constantly outdoes HIMSELF.

  • Travis who?

  • i had to wear protection listening to this song.

  • @Sharpsthedrummer And yet again, I was misunderstood... : / Jojo is my favorite contemporary drummer. He is phenomenal, but videos with terrible framerate may give you the wrong impression of what you're looking at. Its more like a cartoon than it is a drummer. I hope it became clear now.

  • thanks for ruining my new pants jojo

  • Guys, before passing judgement on a drummer, please get to see him demonstrating his powers on a better frame rate video than this one. This is so bad even Travis Barker could pass as a great drummer... It generates false impressions. Jojo is fantastic, but this clip makes him look "inhuman" instead, which he isn't, of course.

  • yo! i love this dude!

  • mad thing!

  • very crazy..

  • Better then Buddy Rich. Not because this show solo, but what he plays. Im not disrespect Buddy but to be honest, for me, hes solos are almost the same . trrrrrrrrr on snare, speeding up...aaand.....ta pam ta pam tu du du du du pam pam pam.

  • Comment removed

  • @logilogilogi @logilogilogi Buddy is always the drum parameter by which every technical drummer is judged... Not Jojo. You people are always comparing anything to Buddy desperately trying to knock him off from his timeless position as the "world's greatest drummer". Buddy's solo was NOT always the same. You need to have had a wider experience with his immense scope as a drummer. He was mostly flashy because thats what people mostly wanted to see from him within a couple of minutes on television.

  • @cadaverr I respect Buddy as i say, He had insane stamina and speed in single stroke roll, he is the best in this way for sure but, music that he create for my ears ar not special, cause i dont like it. And thats my humble opinion and you do not have agree with that. I must say that i had my own thinking, not what colective mind/counsiness say. Peace man. And btw i hear every solo (on youtube) and for me its very similar. Espetiatly i dont like hes performance on foot.

  • @Chally70 There was definitely originality in this, but yes, you can sense his influences (Vinnie, big time, amomg others). Hey, we all take what we learn from our predecesors and make it our own, and he does have a style of his own, most definitely.

  • im glad that drummers still evolve over the years like jojo... i mean right here he does the buddy stick tricks and play some crazy vinnie fills, and now hes really killin it with his technique and sets his drums up differently etc. some drummers just have enough groove or chops that they can just always keep up with what they got, then theres guys like Jojo that constantly evolve and get better, even when better doesnt seem to be possible! :) kids should dig jojo instead of speed demons! GROW!

  • @rubenskatefreaks im sure you can buddy

  • he plays so much different then back then.. as he gets older, he's playing is more mature and more refined.. just like Dave weckl, vinnie calouita etc..

  • crazy is right.

  • @rubenskatefreaks Do it then

  • Travis Barker is from Blink -182

  • @jakoblfuller That is a good joke. Thanks for the laughs.

  • this is from jojo mayer modern drummer 98 i think.

  • hey this guy's pretty neat

  • @herzogsbuick pretty neat?? hes fuckin insane

  • TUMBS UP IF YOU SAW HIM HIT THE LAST CYMBAL WITH JUST HIS HAND!!! TALK ABOUT EPIC!!!

  • The solo might not make sense becuz it's a short clip of the solo. Just think he is 2 x better than that now.

  • cymbal pwnage.

  • Did anyone else see him hit the cymbal with his hand at 1:56

  • Hmmm.. Buddy Rich son ??

  • solo makes no sense!! doesnt tell a story at all... great chops though

  • just playin

  • terrible....

  • I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks, even back when this was made Jojo still impressed me more than Buddy. I know, I'm going to hell.

  • SO FUCKING GOOD!!!

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • man this guy is a monster

  • best drummer evaaar

  • i like watching him solo, but im always like way more interested in just watching him groove, cause he can groove like no other

  • ALTER SCHWEDE _ WTF

  • i like the way he hit that cymbal at the end.

  • @inpheKtid2DistorTion

    Google Tommy Aldridge then :)

  • That is the most haphazard way of playing the drums I have ever seen. Very cool though

  • Hey jojo !!!

    Can u play ?

    I mean... Like a normal person ???

Are you a fuckin Alien or sht ???

    Maybe a drum god ??

please dont make us drool !!

  • god

  • The full version of this is way beter

  • WTF is doing? Tony Royster Jr. it's better

  • @willdrummer33 o__o umm no thats all i have to say

  • @willdrummer33 Dude Tony is inspired by this guy!

In fact JoJo is one of Tony's mentors....show some respect man...plus this clip is from 1998

  • If u notice most good drummers have nice sets i have a really sucky kit :( and ive palyed for years and when i play on a really nice kit im that much better:/

  • @chevy985 It's not about the gear it's about the person who's playing it....Jojo and plenty of pros have said that

Carlos Santana has even said "A instrument is Souless until you play it"

  • i didn't know marty friedman could play drums. damn. i was wrong lol

  • Personally I think it sounds rubbish.

Skilled, yes. But does it sound good? Nah. Check out Bernard Purdie ;-)

  • @stroketheboat I checked your Pernard Burdie (lol). I can't believe I wasted 3mins of life

  • @equinox0908 Purdie is one of the most recorded drummers in the world. He's played with the greatest. The man IS groove. The man has more feel in his little finger than most drummers have in their entire bodies! What's not to like?

You've obviously no idea what you're talking about :)

  • @stroketheboat This is JoJo from 1998

I don't agree this is rubbish though and I have A LOT of love for Purdie but JoJo now has calmed down and he grooves heavy....

  • This dude will beat me in a drum-off using ONLY a pair of sticks!

  • People think it's about luck. They better go home and practice themselves up.

  • WTF?! He's God, John Bonham must be amazed ;)

  • He like Thomas Lang of the 1990's.

  • INCREDIBLE

  • Dont do drugs!:D

  • ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCK!!!!!!!!

  • lol the beginning

  • Kinda encouraging at the same time discouraging. Makes me want to play drums.. but at the same time I'm like.. "How the fuck?"

  • a-la-verga

  • kool

  • your so great i cant even say anything else

  • Lionel Hampton's old tricks.

  • This is Passion !

    This guy is amazing

  • ...looks as if Thomas Lang had copied Jo Jo Mayer, but I don't know who was first.

  • Great sounding drums (great ear for tuning) and a perfect lead in snare roll, but tricks are for kids. I met Buddy Rich twice and told him to stop playing his sticks. I told him his drums were crying out to him, "Quit trying to hit me and hit me!" Jo Jo is great. I'm just kidding. You guys are so protective of him like he's a God or something. He is simply one more GREAT drummer

  • @eqsmooth Your quite wrong. To be a truly great drummer that people want to not only listen to but watch, you also have to be a good showman. It doesn't really matter if you're throwing your stick up into the air during a quarter note rest and continuing the beat or doing a spider with your right hand while playing linear 32nd notes with your left hand and right foot, you're gonna impress somebody. Therefore, tricks are useful in drumming.

  • @XxStrongDrums1996xX But.... It has nothing (whatsoever) to do with drumming. Nonetheless, Jojo Mayer is amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • @LedZeppelinDrummer1 um....what?

  • @LedZeppelinDrummer1 You know nothing about drums.

  • Jojo is one of my best drummer ever.

Check my new extreme sticks trick video on /watch?v=h8DaLX76LHA

  • did jojo use sonar back in these days?

  • man, i wanna learn the stick trick in the beginning just to show off to my friends, haha

  • My favorite.

  • Haha, fucking awsome! :D

  • he looks like a corpse, lol

  • @zimPol06 hahaha!! :D

  • who's travis barker?

  • @TedEdFred21...

    Who?

not even in the same league

  • this man needs to be in a death metal band......NOW!

  • This guy is amazing

  • He a syncopath!

  • I've never been a big fan of drum solos, there's usually no groove or driving rhythm involved which is what drumming is all about. No disrespect to Jo Jo though, he is awesome :)

  • im gonna blow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the perfect tom sound!!!!

  • Lol, notice the stick flying away at 1:57 and how he falcon punches his last cymbal.

  • It's alright. A little too much cymbal work

  • @metalhead876543210 I think he was just making a point

  • @fengrr i see what ur saying. but too much cymbal will eventually bore an audience . this was a great solo though

  • so thats were jerome flood got the snare trick from

  • It should be illegal to play that well... :D

    Amazing.

  • my fav part is the shoes :) ha really really good

  • I will see him in Dortmund yeah :D

    27.3 ;)

  • this guy is one of the best jazz drummers ive seen in a while

  • Speechless.

  • He is like a really bad ass chinese chef choppin up fish, but instead, on the drums tearin all kinds of shit up! Hell yeah.

  • He's realy crazy man!)))

  • That was epic.

  • @flipskate999 yep, thats def the only thing hes good at...

  • not bad i spose....!!!

  • His 007 Spectre T-shirt is as awesome as his style and skills.

  • its really fucking good drummer

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • Why is he doing that?

  • Unfortunately this is the edited version. About a year ago you could see this vid in its entirety and radical epicness.

  • one of the most perfect moeller techniques in drumming

one of my favourite drummers along with greb and lang

  • @dkane411 yeah i agreed lang benny greb and mayer are the new school, like colaiuta weckl and gadd in the 80's

  • @FSXLOVER4 U have no idea -.-

  • u may have 5 thumbs down but i agree with u :)... he might actually be good but here he's just showin off and there's no groove

  • fuck you jo jo you're too good

  • the only people who don't like show boating are the ones in the dingy :)

  • this guy is crazy!! that was so frikkin ace!

  • dude has kung fu grip

  • thats some drummer there sir!!lol but in all fairness if i could make money from doing what he does and if i was even able to do half the shit he is id make money from it too but obviously in order to do that you need to put on a good show and that means you need to learn some pointless tricks.fair fucks

  • its just what you prefer man

  • He plays with his hair too much? Thats a stupid comment. One solo he does stick tricks in and you bash it. Have you watched his other solos? All great drummers do showmanship solos. John Blackwell is another phenomenal drummer who does the stick twirls. Watch Jojo's other solos instead of bashing the he used stick twirling in.

  • Not stupid comment. Every video I've ever seen he is doing this stupid shit w/his sticks which is hardly original. DRUM, BABY DRUM. Hit the drums. Music is subjective. I appreciate his enormous "skills" or speed but he is a noisy show off. Good on him but I'd rather listen to 100 drummers who play songs. He is a noisy drummer. he is no Dennis Chambers, Cobham or Phillips. It is about being pleasing to the ear for each individual. Go ahead, trip on Mayer, I'll listen to Roach & Tony Williams

  • eqsmooth = hater. Dont hate on people that have more skills than you. It's kinda tacky...

  • Of course he's got more skills than me.I'm watching youtube while he's practicing. He totally has skills. I'm not hating I just don't care for the show boat crap. He's a great drummer and Buddy Rich is likely the greatest if one can be the greatest. Unlike you I've met Buddy Rich and many of the great drummers of our time. Itold Buddy Rich to his face to get some humility and stop yelling at his band etc... Unlike you I don't lecture people through a computer. Tacky? Fuck you.

  • @eqsmooth

You need some humility. Jojo is AGAINST stick trick and being a showboat. He learned that stuff in the 1980s when he was in his 20s and was impressionable. Jojo has been MUSIC FIRST since the early 90s ; respect that.

  • We all could use humility, but it comes from experience not from a personal lecture. That said I should have known that about Jo Jo Mayer. I've taken a long break from drumming and have just recently been active in getting to know the "new" drummers. I got booed once for twirling at a concert in Wyoming. Fairly large crowd and I was a guest performer. I saw Tommy Aldridge get booed for twirling during a clinic. There was a thing against it after the hair bands died out. Why so serious? So Bored?

  • @eqsmooth

New drummer? Jojo has been a professional since his teens in the 1970s.

  • @PositivelyBored

I mean newer than some of the greatest like Buddy Rich, Tony Williams who are his influences. He's only 47. I put "new" in quotes. WTF? Does anybody read?

I don't know who was paying him since he didn't record until the 90's

Thomas Lang does this same stuff and a bunch of others. I don't see or hear Tony Williams or Buddy Rich by the way.

Where are his less show boaty videos and why doesn't he play w/significant musicians?

  • @eqsmooth

How am I to determine what you meant by "new"? How do I know your age relative to what you consider "old" and New"? Are other people supposed to automatically know all of this, as you seem to know?

  • Dude, I know everything and I can teach how to do the same.

  • lets see you eqsmooth, you got me interested...

    upload your videos

  • @eqsmooth who says someone has to play with other good "significant" musicians to be regarded highly in their own field? and all you have to do is look around a bit to find less "show boaty" vids, type in new york grooves jojo mayer

  • Search for Emily Remler - Tribute to Charley. That is Jojo drumming in his 20s, 1986. Emily Remler was a very well-known and respected jazz guitarist. You should know that though, knowing everything ;)

  • How much noise can you make? Strating from 1:18 till 2:01 :D

  • Jojo has amazing feel.

Whats a good album by nerve?

  • after seeing that i dont think i can ever play the drums again

  • It's called stick tricks. It's not about the beats. It's about what else he can do with a stick. For example, im sure if you were there then he would tell you to bend over and he will show you what else he can do with them

  • thats off beat u idiot.... in other words DRUM SOLOS

  • Amazing..................

  • These tricks are cool, but jojos real talent lies within the music. He is just unbelievable. I've seen him live twice... just too good for this world.

  • no body is better than jojo!

  • he ALWAYS had equipment failure! haha. The poor guy, his snares come off at 1:00, he has to put them back on. Its almost unnoticeable though, thats how fast he thinks on his feet

  • he does that on purpose to make a diff. sound

  • nope, not at the place I was talking about. They came off by themselves, and he had to break the phrasing that he was developing to put them back on. He uses the open snare at the start though, you're correct on that.

  • oh how unlucky

  • yeah, for some reason, jojo always has his equipment fail on him. I can think of like three solos that he had to constantly mess around, on one his drums were sliding around, the other, high hat kept slipping up, etc. And he still manages to play a coherent, interesting, and difficult solo around it :)
